This is the best before/after photo matchup video I've seen. I wish, though, that the sequence of photos was now-then-now rather than just now-then. But that's a minor quibble.
It often amazes me how many little details remain the same. The photo of the German officers in a room with windows behind them was intriguing, the open wooden shutters around the windows hadn't changed one tiny bit since then, it looked like they hadn't even been moved a mm in all those years. Little details like that make it easier to transport yourself back to that time, it's a peculiar feeling to consider that some things are just still exactly as they were. Utterly amazing. Save for any young kids that might have been in any of the pictures, all have passed on by now. Almost 80 years ago. Many things seem to be the same with the buildings and I admire the ''then and now'' comparison. The research and location scouting alone is a massive effort. Thank you for presenting this. War is such a sad event. So many lives lost. Thank you to the producers of this video …… thank you! 🙏
Beautifully matched and rendered photographs. A sombre and sorrowful reminder of what war takes away from families. So many young lives wasted. And the brutality of public executions speaks volumes about what war does to humanity. Bringing out the worst in people.
@@itsonlyme9938 To think it was just about "one man in Germany" is ignorant. Many different things brought about World War 2. Even if Hitler and the Nazis didn't come to power (someone else would have) the "Treaty of Versailles" all but guaranteed WW2 would happen. You cant impose that kind of punishment on a country while calling it "reparations" and expect people to put up with it.
@@moappleseider1699 Yes but, wouldn't you have to agree, if you are even a little sentient, that hitler brought his own unique and disgusting contributions? Where another person might have opted for any one of the zillion other options?

i absolutely love the idea of combining old and new photos of recognisable places. I live in the Falklands and I've been tinkering with the idea of comparing scenes from the conflict to now.
Even colorized pictures and videos do not do justice to seeing a modern-taken photograph, it's incredible the contrast of seeing the exact same spot in color and in the blink of an eye to know that it was still there in the past. I can only imagine those titanic photos we have and if we were able to grasp in reality how it really was, literally it's like like traveling through time. Incredible work here.. Kudos!
That was very touching toward the last half especially when the parents were shown at their son's grave and being elderly I estimate he'd been gone for at least 20-30 years and still in mourning. This was my first time seeing actual personal info about the ongoing war within those left behind. What a tragedy as I think of my Dad's Mom who had nervous breakdown's over her two sons that served in the ETO and my mom's brother who fought against the Russians counter offensive in Latvia who never returned home. Sometimes tragedies become cause and effect when my mom and dad married in Augsburg, Germany during the time my Dad and many others got transferred out and into POW duty. In the film the Narrator mentioned German women getting married and shipping overseas wow that could be a good thing for the husband who's wife stays home because the Americans took issue with it in Germany and America, but the husband had lots of fun with a wife who feels safer at home.
Thank you for your wonderful work, it is only in death do people realise that we are all one nation, joined by the same grief.. the same pain........ Thank you for giving dignity back to the dead I wish all peaceful skies ahead........ 🤔🇬🇧
What a moving display and excellent job of merging past and present images. Brings it all home. Musical accompaniment is perfect. Thanks for an outstanding reminder of whence we have come.
When you sit back and think about it, on a huge scale, every country you can think of is its own museum, each with history and relics from a former era.

Horrifying thing is we haven’t been around to see anywhere near the worst of it… praying I won’t live to see the next world war. Especially with our modern day nuclear weapons, that could extinct a small country.
Amazing piece of editing and production. Music was well chosen to. Superb posting showing terrible times….. Much gratitude to the brave allies who liberated Europe and may the dead Rest in Peace.
Very powerful video. 6 or 7 of my uncles fought in WW 2. They didn't talk much about it. War is terrible, so many lives cut short. Who knows what might have been if millions lived out their full lives?
A painful, yet hopeful, reminder that life goes on despite the tragedies of the past as well as those to come. Some will survive to go on to do good for all of us. Some will not, but they lent a hand along the way. If only those buildings, trees, streets, and rocks could talk to tell us what took place. What a sobering experience that would be. May God grant eternal peace to all of the fallen.
War is a horrible thing that no human being should ever have to endure. For those who have it's like taking a stroll thru Hell. And those who haven't, be thankful to the ones that walked through it for you. This is another "Then and Now" masterpiece. To me they're not only videos but beautiful works of art. Thank you for your great work. 🫡
THANK YOU for this vid; these scenes; it’s made history come to life: the haunting music that’s somber/sad/respectful; the interplay of past photos superimposed upon current photos make the horror of war/deaths realistic; those graves…AGAIN, THANK YOU for sharing….
You never know what happened in the past on any given spot. There are buildings on my property that are gone now and after I am gone, no one will ever remember them.
im 19 now and its just so so so sad and scary to think that i would have been in pictures like these- possibly a distant body sprawled out in the background. really opens my eyes to the life i have today :(
This video will be very useful for all of our descendants. I, who am Indonesian and did not experience those events and even my country was not directly involved in those events, felt touched, as if I was there. It's lucky that many buildings don't experience much change there, unlike in my country where lots of historical buildings have been replaced by new buildings, for the sake of money. Let's study history, let's read the books and together prevent the recurrence of this terrible war.
Hi Michelle. If you attended the Liberation of Cannes, you probably heard about two local resistance men who have been reported as missing since the day of the Liberation: Francis Tonner and Henry Bergia. I have made a video about the whole story that you may be interested in seeing: ruclips.net/video/LxBOFpVBtQs/видео.html
The older I get, the more fascinated I become with history, the 2 world wars and the Wild West… I’ve also watched many documentaries on romans and vikings… but the wars are incredibly fascinating, knowing I’ve spoken with ppl who lived through it and not asking questions and hearing their stories upsets me daily… if only time travel was a thing 😢

They must not be forgotten either. And we must never take for granted the freedom they fought for. A wonderful tribute.
All these pictures show how short lived and temporary we all are. We are like birds flying through trees, just like many generations did before. We do not own the world, but just walk around in it for a few years.

I watched this 3 times,my father was in the special forces in WW2,I see him in their shadows,he passed in 03, always spoke of the men he fought with as brothers. He was medic in his unit and told me once that there are no atheists on the battle field, all prayed before they died.he would have heard their last cry's.james McCreadie was his name.he was a red beret. Australia 1st para regiment.
About atheists and foxholes, here is an interesting letter written by Lt George Parnell, of the 887th Engineers, after he was wounded in southern France: "I could see the machine gun bullets walking down the road towards me and they didn’t bother me a bit. I was facing down the road on my stomach and watched them - they came right by my ear and down my side and one caught my foot - on the third burst I rolled off the road and down a steep hill and then played hide and seek with the machine gun and sniper for about an hour and a half trying to work my way back out of sight and range. The injured foot did not hurt at all. The actual hit felt like someone had tied a rope on the foot and given the rope a short tug. They shelled me at the same time but fortunately I found a culvert running under the road which protected me from the shelling and also provided a means of escape. I crawled through it under the road and kept to the ravine it led into up and over the mountain. (…) Yes Beatrice, I do like it here. Right now I’m doing something more important than I’ve ever done before in my life. I like it and I’m proud of it and have every intention of doing it until either it or myself is finished - my little life is so unimportant and I really do realize and believe that - by the way - there are atheists in fox-holes - I am one. My only thought was that that son of a bitch couldn’t hit the barn door at 50 feet."

чем блять тут восхищаться? нацистско-путинской оккупцией? убийствами?
Einfach nur traurig!😢. Danke für das ergreifende Video! Friede auf Erden für alle Menschen!
Well said. Thank you.
Addendum: I just read your ''bibliography'' after locating it. Wow, you really did your homework on this!!
What bibliography?
Je ne connaissais pas ces photos.
Émouvant et bizarre de voir des lieux où l’on a grandi sous cette facette .
Bonjour. Vous pouvez voir la version francaise de cette video sur mon compte francais "Crocodile Tear en Francais"
Sorry for the reupload, this video has also had to be remade in order to to comply with youtube community guidelines. The original version is still online here: studio.ruclips.net/user/videoEiR9QRlyzrM/edit
The hell with RUclips and their ever changing guidelines...
Keep up the good work! 👍
@@stephanedorion992 Yes, they tell you your video is safe and there are no issues, and all of a sudden when it manages to take off and gets a million views, they decide it is not safe for the comminity after all and cut its wings off.
@@CrocodileTear This video is priceless. (The TOS on "youscrew" is severely immature, arbitrary, and bullies those with so much to offer. It caters to sheltered ignorance.)
This particular video makes me think I must be cutting onions, but Im not.
absolutely preposterous.
War is such a sad event. So many lives lost. They never had a chance to savour the joys of life, so many unfulfilled dreams, so many unspoken words, not even a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones …… and still wars continue over the landscape of history, even to this day! Thank you to the producers of this video …… thank you! 🙏
Thank you for taking a moment to post a comment
I could watch that a thousand times and then watch it a thousand more.. Awesome concept. Intriguing.. Thought provoking.. Sad..
Thank you for all the memoriam pic love the way you centered them in the exact location .to have a better view of the happening
Wonderful. Thank you for all the hard work that went into this video.
Wonderful. An emotional roller coaster ride. Thank you for a wonderful video.
Quel magnifique travail, bravo et merci !👍
Bonjour et merci. Vous pouvez voir mes vidéos en Français aussi maintenant sur la chaine "Crocodile Tear en Français".
Beautifully matched and rendered photographs. A sombre and sorrowful reminder of what war takes away from families. So many young lives wasted. And the brutality of public executions speaks volumes about what war does to humanity. Bringing out the worst in people.
Yes such a waste because of one man in Germany.
@@mollkatless lol Buddy you can get upset all you want but everything I said was accurate. I never excused anything Hitler did. I simply stated the fact that another world war, with Germany at the heart of it, was almost impossible to avoid after what was done to them. Questioning me on whether or not I am "even a little sentient" only shows your own insecurity and lack of intelligence.
Beautifully done video.
The vibe i get from this video is that their ghosts are still there.
May we know true peace in our lifetime.
Evocative, haunting and quite brilliant. Well done Uncle John.
This vid was unbelievably good, the last 40 seconds or so very sad. Thank You for your efforts.
Very well done (as we have come to expect)!
It's true we are shadows passing through this world, it makes you think of our own lives that are passing also.
Nous ne sommes que de passage.
Feels like I am seeing ghosts. Maybe people who have the gift see images like this in reality.
Excellent job overlaying the photos. Very well done! Thanks.
i absolutely love the idea of combining old and new photos of recognisable places. I live in the Falklands and I've been tinkering with the idea of comparing scenes from the conflict to now.
a superb posting, excellent content.
A video that shows pointless wars and killing. Life goes on, one way or another. So much pain and sorrow, and yet we can see some smiles as well.
Einfach nur traurig 😥! Danke für das ergreifende Video! Frieden auf der Welt für alle Menschen!
Thank you. The most mesmorising 8 minutes of my life.
I suppose many British women who’s husbands were serving overseas were never short of stockings and bubble gum when the Yanks arrived.
What a fantastic video, the work and editing is superior, many thanks to you--
Seriously underrated channel.
Thank you for your wonderful work, it is only in death do people realise that we are all one nation, joined by the same grief.. the same pain........
Thank you for giving dignity back to the dead
I wish all peaceful skies ahead........

The absolute best video of this type on you tube! Incredible!
Really touching.
Absolutely amazing work.
Far better than those released by Reuters.
Hats off to the artist and many thanks for sharing this incredible journey.
Appreciate the amount of work that went into this, thanks for sharing.
What a moving display and excellent job of merging past and present images. Brings it all home. Musical accompaniment is perfect. Thanks for an outstanding reminder of whence we have come.
When you sit back and think about it, on a huge scale, every country you can think of is its own museum, each with history and relics from a former era.
I've never seen any of these "Then and Now" images. Superbly done.!
Great video!
Amazing work. I love how you lined up the photos perfectly. I see so many before/after comparisons where people don't do that, and it always irks me.
Ghosts of the past.🙏🏽
Served from ‘73…2011….Vietnam through Afghanistan/Iraq wars.
I hurt and pray daily for all my brothers lost too early.
War Sucks.🤬
RIP to ALL🙏🏽🕊️
Horrifying thing is we haven’t been around to see anywhere near the worst of it… praying I won’t live to see the next world war.
The "now and then" WW2 video's are fascinating to me. And this is likely the best one I've seen . Extremely well done. Thank you
Thanks, and help spread the good word.
WOW! Even after more than eighty years, the shapes and outlines of the mountains had hardly changed !
Love this channel! Seeing the old photos line up is amazing! Great job!
Thanks for this wonderful work❤
I've tried many times to overlay old maps onto current ones. This is very impressive work.
where do you get current maps?
There are buildings on my property that are gone now and after I am gone, no one will ever remember them.
im 19 now and its just so so so sad and scary to think that i would have been in pictures like these- possibly a distant body sprawled out in the background. really opens my eyes to the life i have today :(
Thank you..
This is one of the coolest things i've seen on RUclips.
Estupendo trabalho! Magnífico! Incrível! As 2 últimas fotos é de fazer chorar. Você faz um trabalho fantástico. Obrigado ❤
This was unexpectedly very sad.
I think any honnest publication about war can only be sad.
Attended the liberation of cannes parade several times but wow these really bring a whole new perspective
Hi Michelle. If you attended the Liberation of Cannes, you probably heard about two local resistance men who have been reported as missing since the day of the Liberation: Francis Tonner and Henry Bergia.
I did an in depth investigation on theé and have been able to find where both éen are actualy probably buried as unknowns, but surprisingly (or not), the French governement does not care at all. I have made a video about the whole story that you may be interested in seeing: ruclips.net/video/LxBOFpVBtQs/видео.html
Beautiful work you do these
The older I get, the more fascinated I become with history, the 2 world wars and the Wild West… I’ve also watched many documentaries on romans and vikings… but the wars are incredibly fascinating, knowing I’ve spoken with ppl who lived through it and not asking questions and hearing their stories upsets me daily… if only time travel was a thing 😢
Woow great comparison. But why only 537 views only on this video.
Because it was posted a few hours ago, and the initial version with one million views was censored (non monetizable or 18+ means you video is dead) by youtube.
So feel free to share it.
@@CrocodileTear Sure will 😊
@@CrocodileTear A viewer must've flagged it. Censorship is criminal. How did you find out how to remove what made it "offensive"? Ive dealt with them for 16 years, and they are always vague about condemning my videos. They took down an instrumental piece of music I posted, that had no lyrics or visuals. Only music. Labeled as "Glorifying Violence". Makes me .. nope not going to say it.
@@DVincentW I dont know what the issue was and can only guess. I removed the most gory photo and replaced it by a softer version of the same photo...
What surprises me is that my videos are monetized, so they are losing a certain amount of money by censoring them....
You could also expect that when you make a video with hundreds of thousands of views, they could at least tell you what the issue is before killing it.
Just awesome. Could watch over and over. Thank you
Love the old ww2 photos.
My dad spent all of 1944 in France and Belgium with the 103rd ID.
Ghosts traveling through time. 🌹
Thank you for this. These allied soldiers must not be forgotten. The grief in the eyes of the parents standing by the graves of their child who died as a teenager fighting the evil of the time. They must not be forgotten either. And we must never take for granted the freedom they fought for. A wonderful tribute.
Incrível! Muito interessante! . Evocative, haunting and quite brilliant. Well done Uncle John..
All these pictures show how short lived and temporary we all are. We are like birds flying through trees, just like many generations did before. We do not own the world, but just walk around in it for a few years.
Well said. What seems horrific or irreversible today, in time, changes. For the French under Nazi occupation however, those four years probably seemed like they'd never end. Then one day, as suddenly as it began, it was over.
@@astropioneer3296 And now France and Germany are peaceful neighbours and allies - within the European Union. The EU is a massive success - for this reason alone.
@@Retrohertz Agreed 👍🏼
However you matched old and new pictures in every dimension, it is outstanding!
80 years ago ! This rams home the futility of war and yet we are still experiencing it in 2024. This Earth will never experience endless peace until man does not exist. Sadly we are the problem. Nothing has change in centuries and nor will it.

Absolutely extraordinary. Thank you, thank you, thank you. They’re all ghosts now.
About atheists and foxholes, here is an interesting letter written by Lt George Parnell, of the 887th Engineers, after he was wounded in southern France:
"I could see the machine gun bullets walking down the road towards me and they didn’t bother me a bit.
