      Wasps are assholes. Unlike bees, they don't need reason to sting you, they just indiscriminately stab everything, and will do so continuously until you pry them off.

    South Carolina also has fire ants. I moved to SC in 2016 and 2017 and I saw a huge mound of fire ants. Since March 2018 the ants have invaded the inside of my house (maybe on revenge). I can tell because:
    A: they are swarming my family's front porch.
    B: I woke up a few weeks ago before mosquitoes wake up covered in ant-mosquito venom bites

It's for the best, since it probably encourages people to stay away from them, but it kills his credibility. Ant and wasp stings can be very painful and the pain can last for hours, but it's not the crippling, torturous agony that he portrays it as.

      Ants, like all insects, do not breathe but rather oxygen diffuses into their exoskeletons. This is why you cannot have giant insects--volume increases exponentially while surface area increases linearly, meaning they would suffocate if they got too big.

    • @besmart
      @besmart  8 лет назад +2

      This is a good thought! But no reason to worry. The flies have been tested extensively in the lab and phorids are extremely specific to their target species. There is very little chance that they will begin targeting other ant species, and their best hope is to keep fire ants under control anyway, eradication is impossible at this point

    • @urbanprimitive5766
      @urbanprimitive5766 8 лет назад

      Actually, they did figure out a really complicated way for it to end well. Now, sometimes it does not, such as introducing Mongoses to Hawaii to control rats. Turns out that they prefer birds. But hopefully these flys will just eat fir ant heads, which is OK with me.

      There's just one thing you forgot. A very little chance is more than none. And since I'm affected by whether or not this works, odds are the unluck of the 1/8 Irish will come into play, and those flies will mutate somehow and start laying eggs in EVERYTHING! Then people will bring in chameleons, which will then eat native flies and start overpopulating, and then people will bring in the next on the food chain, and so on until eventually the whole continent is overrun with lions. I know this sounds unlikely, but again, I have the unluck of the 1/8 Irish, and am affected by this.

      It's a demonstration that fire ants are non-Newtonian liquids. Undisturbed, they flow like a regular liquid. But shake them up and they will clump up into solid ant-balls which you can pick up, and then they adopt liquid behavior once again.

      +Tommy Klein actually, ants are Non-Newtonian liquid. Or atleast a demonstration on how they act like non-Newtonian fluids. Take oobleck for example, let it flow, and it flows, try punching it, it becomes hard. Make these ants feel the motion of waves or water, they act like liquid.

On vacation in Florida, she had her first encounter with ye olde fire ant. For around 15 minutes, she had this stinging feeling in her foot that she could not shake. Luckily, my grandfather heard the commotion, and sprayed her with a hose. And... well... the rest is history.

      It's due to a couple of things: There's less people there, so since they are mainly spread through human commerce (like the plant nursery trade), there's less chance to spread. They are also a tropical species that doesn't do well in extremely dry areas, although cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas pump enough water into people's lawns and gardens that fire ants have also been found in those desert cities.

    • @DaleKamp

      Because they originate from rainforests and its like a trillion degrees in Arizona and new Mexico, besides they're aren't that many humans as compared to California, and humans are why they spread.

They were introduced to combat an existing invasive species, but it didn't work. Like, at all. The Mongooses did far more harm than good. If you're worried about the Ant-Decapitating flies causing the same problem in the southern continental US, I think your instincts know what they're talking about. I'm worried about that failure potential, too.

Ants there were a nightmare to most of us because they survived in hot weather, where event a grass couldn't survive. I swear that if you got stung by them, you just want to cut that part out of your body. It took several days to a week to recover from that stung. and you just got a permanent beautiful mark there forever

    I just recently moved to central Florida. And fire ants were one of the first things I had to learn about. Coming from Kansas, we had fire ants but they were rare. Where we live in Florida, they are the ONLY ant and they cover the ground completely. Its not even an exaggeration, they have dominated the ground over any other insect here.
    Walking barefoot outside isnt even an option, and neither is touching anything that has sat outside for longer than a few minutes.
    The rate at which these things work is amazing, and annoying. They can build new mounds in minutes with little effort. They are very difficult to control, we have tried many different products geared towards killing fire ants and they always come back within a few weeks in even larger numbers.
