Why Electric Discharge happens from Pointy Region (in Hindi)

  • In this Physics video in Hindi for Class 12 we explained why electric discharge from a high voltage object happens from its pointy region. This is the effect of high electric field generated at the surface of a pointy (sharp edge) region, despite the whole surface is at the same potential.
    Electric field at a charged surface is proportional to the surface charge density there. And the surface charge density is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of the region. Hence the less is the radius of curvature of region at a surface, the more is the intensity of electric field.

    Thank you so much sir for this phenomenal lecture.
    This phenomenon is called corona and it can also be visible in bluish colour in the high voltage overhead transmission line. To overcome this effect we have to use a circular conductor instead of a triangular or any other shape.

    Sir please help me. When we say we bring a charge from infinity to a point near another charge, why do we say that the work done in that case is QV and not infinite. Sir as per the definition of work, it should be FS and as the charge has been displaced infinitely, the work done should be infinite.
    And for the part of this video it was very informative sir. Thank you for helping us grow our knowledge. 🙏🙏

      @@edupoint.physics A cyclotron is a type of compact particle accelerator which produces radioactive isotopes that can be used for imaging procedures. Stable, non-radioactive isotopes are put into the cyclotron which accelerates charged particles (protons) to high energy in a magnetic field. ( from Google)
