If it is only south, then even Kiribati is an option (regarding possible flights from Honolulu). The country that comes first to the New Year every year. Or Samoa. But most probably New Zealand, a very interesting and diverse country.

I predict you are ultimately headed for NZ, but I think you'll stop somewhere else beforehand. The options for direct flights from Honolulu are Kiritimati Island in Kiribati, Papeete in Tahiti, Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, and Samoa (either Apia in free Samoa or Pago Pago in the US colony). I imagine it will be Tahiti or the Cook Island (or maybe both?). Should be interesting.

That's the knock on Hawaii for the last few years is accomodation prices are really too high. Of course the food is high too. It's inexpensive to fly there from the mainland U.S. but after that all bets are off. Makes SE Asia look like a total bargain.

My wife and I honeymooned on Kauai in June 1989. And we have returned a number of times over the years with our kids when they were young. Stayed at the CoCo Palms in 1989. It was destroyed in
1992 by Hurricane Iniki. The last time I was there in 2011 the CoCo Palms was still in ruins and I hear that it still is. However, the island is magical! Kee Beach is the best.

Loved the islands, the scenery, the beaches.
Last time I was there was 2000, the prices we're getting rediculous, that's when I called it quits.
I'm pretty sure I stayed at that resort back in '92 a few months after hurricane Iniki struck in September. The tourist had cancelled that Christmas, and the resort was completed full of the locals that had lost there homes.
Would I go back? Only if the price was right.

We did a NZ North Island road trip in 2023. It was very nice and the towns were wonderful to explore. We did South Island many years ago and loved it too! Hi Gabriel, Hawaii is so beautiful, but the islands have made it unaffordable for most people because of the development. This is the problem that Puerto Rico grapples with. If the development becomes more intense it changes the landscape, and you only have the wealthy taking over and pushing out the other classes of people. Greece in Europe is experiencing this now even in Spain the overrun of tourists has discouraged many from coming to Spain with much of the world changing and ex-pats moving into different countries have changed the landscape driving the cost of development in these countries.

OVERrated. Friend had been trying to get me to Kauai for years. I am a simple, go to baja person or Yucatan. I finally relented and went to nw Kauai. They were freaking out about the foliage (we are from desert) , but I had seen dense foliage in central Am and even Mx before. It is a tremendous isle, don't get me wrong, but it is still the USA. So rules, regs, traffic, parking, other Americans, expensive, etc....fill in the blank. Can't have a beer on the beach etc....Plus, have friends that are native there and I can feel their pressure: tourism needed, but they grew up before boom there...the billions poured in from rich mainlanders, natives have impossible options now...etc....just tough situation. When I travel that far, I do not want to see cars, abide by insane rules, pay 20 dol for a tequila, or be around chad and Gwyneth from Denver who parked their land rover at DIA and will check the CU boulder scores while on the beach. Hard pass. Did I mention prices, omg. If I never go back, I am good.....let the locals enjoy their island. Disclosure, my experience is super limited. Just my opinion.

@@VolkerHelmich It's called the 9th island because so many Hawaii people move there when they move to the mainland. It's just a nickname. So many Hawaiian restaurants in Las Vegas.
