  • In a hard fought final,William Tanui just gets past his fellow Kenyan Nixon Kiprotich to take the gold.It was good to see USA's Johnny Gray finally get a medal in the third of his four Olympic 800m. finals,for once not fading in the home straight.

    Grey had so much talent. I remember this final in Barcelona, I was hoping that Grey finished with the gold medal, but he ran amazing and got bronze.

    'Mad' Johnny takes it to the 'Gray Zone' with another suicidal race strategy but great to see him get some reward for an outstanding career. Legend.

    Gray raced an unsatisfactory race at the last Olympics. This time, the result was 3rd, but I think he was able to have a satisfying race.

    I was in the stadium. I was seated near the track on the back curve. I remember feeling proud Johnny Gray hung on for Bronze.

    Gray's stumble might make you think he was done for, probably woke him up after leading the whole damn race!

    Announcer called Everett as the leader three times at the start when it was Gray all the time. He then says : “Now Johnny Gray is taking it on” as though he hadn’t made a mistake in his call. Both incompetent and unable to admit he was wrong.

    Yes, Gray did get a medal but I think this was the first time the 800m had rest days. It seemed to me he always struggled with consecutive days running.

      @Don Fatale I remember Sally Gunnell and Marie-José Pérec also won that day. I vaguely recall another final...the men's 400 meters maybe? Or that took place the following day? Quincy Watts is another forgotten champion.

    • @MrLoaded2012
      @MrLoaded2012 4 года назад +1

      @Don Fatale Nice to read that. I was an easily impressionable 15 year-old from the host country so everything looked amazing to me and of course I remember those games fondly. Funny you mention the lack of obsession with security since that was a major concern due to various violent groups (most notably ETA) still being very active throughout the country, both against officials and civilians. The whole thing was coordinated by a Secretary of State who, incidentally, ended up in jail due to all the dirty tricks he pulled in the fight against terrorism. Anyway, I digress, yes, Watts was the star that day but he quickly vanished after that; then the following day you had the likes of Torrance, Kevin Young and Patoulidou (in the weirdest final) winning.

      Ah, I think I have found an answer:
      www.nytimes.com/1995/02/01/sports/track-and-field-everett-adds-stability-to-his-many-feats.html
      He tore a muscle and crashed to the ground.

      Interesting. Thanks for posting. I always thought he was a pussy in the big races. I wondered why he didn't give his typical great kick like he did in the 92 Olympic Trials. He was in position to make a move in this final and disappeared. At least this explains it.
