- A Scottish folk song I have always enjoyed, it is a light hearted tale of a very tall soldier . The regiment he joined was the Royal Highland Regiment, better known as the Black Watch or The Forty Twa .
WORDS.
g c
Behold I am a soldier bold
g d
and only twenty five years old
c
a braver warrior never was seen
g d g
fae Inverness tae Gretna green
c
when I was young my father said
g d
he`d put me tae a decent trade
c
a didnae like that job at aw
g d
so went and joined the forty twa
g c
The wind may blaw ,the cock may craw
g d
the rain may rain and the snaw may snaw
c
but ye`winna frichten Jock Mcgraw
c g d g
he`s the stoutest man in the forty twa
the sergent when he listed me
he winked his ee an then say`s he
a man like you sae stout and tall
can ne`r be killed by a cannonball
the captain then when he cam roond
and looked me up and looked me doon
then turnin tae the sergeant awa ye scamp
ye`ve lested the bleachfield oot on tramp
The wind may blaw ,the cock may craw
the rain may rain and the snaw may snaw
but ye`winna frichten Jock Mcgraw
he`s the stoutest man in the forty twa
at oor last fecht across the sea
the general he sends efter me
when I get there wi my big gun
the battle of course it was won
the enemy aw run awa
they were feert at Jock McGraw
a man like me sae tall and neat
ye ken yersel could never be beat
The wind may blaw ,the cock may craw
the rain may rain and the snaw may snaw
but ye`winna frichten Jock Mcgraw
he`s the stoutest man in the forty twa
The king then held a grand review
we numbered a thoosand and sixty two
the kiltie lads come marchin past
and Jock McGraw came marching last
the royal pairty grabbed their sticks
and all began tae stretch their necks
cries the king to the colonel upon my soul
I took thet man for a telegraph pole
The wind may blaw ,the cock may craw
the rain may rain and the snaw may snaw
but ye`winna frichten Jock Mcgraw
he`s the stoutest man in the forty twa

Amen. I’m an ethnic Scot from America and serving in the Army. I identify with my ancestors that felt pressured to serve, even if the government didn’t have their best interests at heart, because our martial heritage and natural skills and inclinations.
I like this traditional stuff. Those ancient guys had stories to tell. You have a knack for that kind of ballads ...

Good lord you sound just like poor old Billy Connolly! Not a stereotype to compare you with him I think as he is kind of a folk singer in that scene with Bert Jansch and co. Beautiful tune to this song too, as so many Celtic/Gaelic melodies are.
Thank you very much Peter ! yes Billy boy did sing folks songs too, glad you enjoyed it .
Good stuff.
Eric Dalton Thank you for listening.

I fear one lyric's meaning has eluded me.
"Ye`ve lested the bleachfield oot on tramp." What is the captain saying there?
+Keiko McGinn A good question :) my take on it is the Captain is saying to the Seargent, you scamp ! you have managed to enlist ( or raise up ) the bleach field ( many small towns had bleach fields, large spaces within the town where the linen was laid out to dry after bleaching and rinsing ) and make it march ( on tramp , this may also allude to the fact that farm labourers back then would tramp from one farm to the next ), I think he was just pointing out Jock `s large size, comparing him to the area of the bleach field....or something like that :)
Does anyone know who the singer is? They sound vaguely familiar, but I can't figure it out.
The singer is myself ! me and I :)
total delight!!! love this Jim, the "snaw may snaw" ha ha ha what a great song!
Cheers Michael, it is a fun song :)
