I will start off answering your question with a few Jayz lines that help to paint the picture of Jays presence in rap and how he sees himself.
No I ain’t get shot up a bunch of times = I will never attempt to entertain you with overly unrealistic romanticism of being super gangsta or tough guy stories.
Or make up sh!t in a whole bunch of lines: I will never try to entertain you by being inauthentic and capping for your attention nor am I overly conceptual/abstract in my execution.
And I ain’t animated like say a busta rhymes : I will never be the most electrifying or overly intense rapper/wordsmith that you will here.
But it’s the real sh!t you get when you bust down my lines = No matter what the way I will always attempt to entertain you is by usuing honesty and the authenticity/credibility of that which I communicate accompanied with my skill to solidify my presence in the game.
When looking at Jays career you gave to look at it as he is a longterm investor.
When he debuted in 96 and prior when he was trying to get his wings as a youth rapping, he was overlooked and it was way more artist during his time that were bigger and more off bat electrifying than him in hip hop.
So we know this and HE HIMSELF clarified this is APART of his story.
Now currently if we fast forward to bow jay is undeniably arguably a top 5 level wordsmith with a career that maximized OVERTIME by him being constistent and being arguably the most focused artist we’ve ever seen in rap period. They are artist just as if not more on the surface more entertaining but NO ONE has maximized their worth as a presence talent and MAN outside of just the music than jay.
He is the face of overcoming obstacles and REASONABLE doubt and reaching the highest level possible in a career span through dedication hardwork and having a vision and using his music as being raps greatest goal oriented motivational speaker.
This is why he says “I thought I told you characters I’m NOT a rapper, can I live? I told you that I came to take this &h!t in 96 and I did I handled my bizz”
He’s not saying he doesn’t see himself as a rapper he’s saying that he doesn’t USE rap to just entertain or to JUST rap for skill sake. He uses rap as a form of communication for his real life goals, missteps, and longterm vision. for his life and in THAT is the entertainment.
It’s the accuracy of this actually occurring and speaking things into existence more than any other rapper ever (other than maybe ye) that makes him to me one of the dopest pure rappers ever.

We are talking tripleentendres, vivid imagery, flow versatility, master in pacing, high level of quotability, and then when you ad on that he’s simply meditating (notice I’m not saying just coming off the dome freestyling) on everything he wants to say and then like an orator just letting the words flow out like a speech,
To me all these things correlated together makes him one of the greatest communicators in hip hop history.

Jays style similar to Andre 3000 or lauryn where it is a mixture of sharp and conversational.
