Basically what I got out of this: Knights and cities - Adds lots of new elements and items, Seafares expands the board with boats as roads, and Explorers and Pirates focusing less on trading and great for 2 player.
@@ballaking1000 I agree with you. 2 and 12 are supposed to be weak spots, in order to balance the game. Making those spots twice as good just dilutes the value of the other numbers. Been playing since 2001 and never been a fan of this house rule.

you will definitely need the base game's 5/6 pack. if you want to play with extra people in a thematic expansion, then you need the base game's 5-6 pack AND the expansion's 5-6 pack. both. as for settlers of america, it's like Explorers and Pirates because it's really long and barely has trading. But it's not as good as Explorers and Pirates, and doesn't play 2 players like Explorers and Pirates does.

That's right. I play standard + Seafarers + Cities and Knights, and I know for a fact you can mix in the other two. Currently Traders and Barbarians is on the way, and we will be mixing the 4 together.

I like the fish expansion a lot as well, however I dislike the old shoe, it constantly bounces between players and makes you worry about taking the lead which I don't find fun. The last time we played without the boot and I at least enjoyed it much more. Also we do that prank you explained at the end all the time, except it's always on accident =P

You expand the classic board, although some expansions are so different that they are basically a different game. If you just want to expand the classic board, I would go for seafarers.

Yes, it's impossible to play with all the expansions at once. You can comfortably combine seafarers with another expansion in most cases. Sometimes I combine different cards or mechanics to basically make a new game but it never ends up that well balanced. In my experience it is less fun to combine too much. It makes the game too long and too insane.
Great video, very helpful. I recently had a dispute with a friend over the longest road card. So we were playing a three player game, myself, Jimmy, and Bob. I had a longest road, then Bob got the longest road from me, giving him 4 VP's (cause of the 4 point swing). After Jimmy stole it from bob he had 6 VP's (Bob had 4 VP's then Jimmy got it and got the additional 2 points). In the end Bob had a road of 11 lengths long, Jimmy had one of 11 long also, I had one of 6. I then broke off Jimmy's longest road, so then it would go to Bob, but my logic was that the longest road would essentially go to "limbo" so Bob would get the longest road, but since I broke the longest road he wouldn't get 8 points, only 2, as the 6 point swing in this case wouldn't apply as he didn't build the longer road. I can explain more if this is confusing.
You’re either very confused about how the road works, or there’s a rule change in the expansions you’re playing with I’m not familiar with. However, that said, once longest road is in play, it never leaves play. It can change hands, but never leave.
What the f...OK, I know this comment is really late and I truly hope you've figured this out by now, but the Longest Road card only gives you 2 points if you have it. It doesn't add 2 more points to its point value every time someone takes it away. And it doesn't matter whether Bob added a road segment to get it at the end or if he got it because you broke Jimmy's road, he would only receive 2 points for holding the card either way. It was worth 2 points when you had it, then Bob took it which means you lost 2 but he only gained 2, not 4. Jimmy getting it next means Bob would lose those 2 points and Jimmy would only gain 2 points, not 6. When Bob took the road back at the end he would only gain 2 points, not 8, while Jimmy would lose 2 points the moment he lost the longest road card.

The thing about Seafarers is that it now is two expansions in one. Cities and knights is my personal favorite but even better is Seafarers plus cities and knights together. For people that only want one expansion though then either traders and barbarians or pirates. I don't know which is better than the other but I think Persephone knows that better than me. I mostly just wanted to mention the additional components that come with Seafarers now and how Cities and knights is kinda meant to be played with Seafarers also, while the others really aren't. Another note is that Traders and Barbarians was originally 3 other small expansions that would cost only $3-$10 each. I personally own a very old version so none of these are compatable with my game, so I'm stuck with just Cities and knights unless I get a new version.
Cities and Knights means you MUST think really hard about initial setup. Initial setup decides the game, the rest of the time is just proving that it was the best setup. It has a little bit of everything. But the best answer is get rid of the board game altogether, and instead play the 2 player card game. It gets played more.

Gamers Haven, on pearl road, is my favorite store in the area but they don't have a night like that either. There is a newer game store on the east side near the Melt that has a game night. you can always go to that board game bar in Lakewood. I don't think they have catan but they have some other games. I don't like that bar though. it's too loud and crowded. the music is so loud that I couldn't hear my own voice :(. I don't live in cleveland anymore :( I'm out in San Francisco now. I love Cleveland and it will always be home.
All the expansions dilute the harmonious gameplay and strategy of the base game. They all feel like an excuse to make more money, if you haven't played before just get the base game"settlers of Catan"

Settlers, seafarers, and cities and knights. Play all of them at once. It's the absolute best combination.
