at the time Eminem wasn't just a star, Em was for us like Elvis Presley or something. we hadn't seen anything like him before. He'd just won a fucking OSCAR, man. he'd not only just come off his biggest single ever with _Lose Yourself_ (which he won that Oscar for and which was what they called a "Global No. 1", where it hit the top spot on pretty much every global chart it was on) but also his amazing success with _8 Mile,_ one of the biggest movies of the year it was released (and I think one of the highest-grossing R-Rated movies ever).
in 2004 Eminem was unstoppable. I'd argue that no single artist since Michael Jackson had ever dominated like Eminem did from about 1999-2004 -- and DEFINITELY nobody who wrote their own songs. he was a true phenomenon.
and so it's appropriate and definitely ironic that the song that'd see him FALL from those untouchable heights had the video where he cruelly and pointlessly ripped on Michael Jackson. think about it - _Just Lose It_ was really the first thing we'd heard from Eminem since _Lose Yourself._ it's a long way down. nobody could've predicted _Encore_ would suck so much sweaty tennis ball. nobody.
_Just Lose It, Ass Like That_ . . . it was an amazing thing to see a star fall in quality and public appeal like that. _Mockingbird_ was a great song, great single, but it didn't at all make up for or excuse whatever the hell _Encore_ was trying to be. what a lame, lame album from any artist, but from Eminem? Mr. Green Mile? it was like a bath of freezing piss. and I'm sure it's got its defenders, but I think it's really telling that the next thing released by Eminem after _Encore_ was a Greatest Hits.
in the industry artists release a Greatest Hits when the record company realizes they've peaked. they won't get any higher than what's come before, so put out a Greatest Hits while they still have some pull left. then came _Relapse,_ and only THEN came _Recovery._ Eminem's a fascinating study in pop music. those first three records are amazing. then the fall, then _Recovery,_ then . . . well, he's still doing stuff, I'm sure. his legacy is intact.
sorry, I get hung up on stuff like this. I find it interesting, watching those moments before the rise or the fall. this TV spot advertising _Encore_ is definitely one of them.
