  • A playthrough of Irem's 1992 license-based hop-and-bop platformer for the Super NES, DinoCity.
DinoCity, like Rocky Rodent (another Irem SNES platformer), is one of those games with which, despite its high quality, very few people seem to be familiar. It's a fairly typical platforming title - you jump on enemies' heads, collect items, and run toward the right side of the screen almost the entire time - but it's extremely well put together. And for those that might be interested, it was based on a 1992 movie DinoWars, though the game was renamed to DinoCity when it was released outside of Japan.
The presentation on this one is really nicely done - the game takes on a motif somewhat similar to Joe & Mac and Congo's Caper with its tropical/prehistoric theme, and it features some really nicely done backgrounds and its loaded with color. There's some flashy use of Mode 7 at a few points for some neat effects with enemies and rotating backgrounds, as well. For as well produced as it all is, though, I can't help but feel that the graphics are a tad bit generic - the main character's sprite is about as boring as it could possibly be, and the enemies are cloned a bit too often throughout. It doesn't hamper the playability at all, but it seems a bit at odds with everything else. The same complaint could be leveled at the story, until you see just how awkward and hilarious the story really is. Seriously, watch that intro - that super slow text crawl might lead you to question where the game is actually heading with a few of its lines...
The gameplay itself reminds me a lot of Blue's Journey on the NeoGeo, but you control both your character and the dinosaur. To reach higher jumps or to make yourself a smaller target, you can jump off the dinosaur at any time - just be careful, since if you kill your dinosaur, you'll instantly die with him. There are a number of moments that require switching back-and-forth, and I really enjoyed the variety that the mechanic brought to the action.
The platforming is quite standard, but the controls are tight, and in classic Irem fashion, it's unbelievably difficult. Seriously, Dino City makes Super Mario World look like absolute child's play. It will kill you over. And over. And over. It's merciless. And that's exactly why I like it so much. All too often the cutesy platformers are all style with no teeth, and that's certainly not the case here. It feels far more in-line with the arcade platformers than the console ones at the time.
DinoCity may look like just another Mario clone, but there's a lot to it beneath the hood. I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone that wants a legitimately challenging platformer that manages to stay fair, no matter how infuriating it might get at times.

DinoCity is a cutesy platformer that lulls you into a false sense of complacency with its bright, kid-friendly graphics, only to then stomp on you and laugh as it picks your remains from between its toes. Calling it difficult would be an understatement, but it's an excellent platformer for those that can handle it.

Irem tended to make some pretty hard as nails games, games that when you beat them, you felt like you accomplished an impossible feat.

This SNES game is based on the 1992 U.S. release of the 1991 British feature "Adventures in Dinosaur City" by Smart Egg Pictures.

This game's always been a hyperfixation of mine ever since i discovered it on that snes compilation ps2 disc (latam thing) all those years ago, despite never beating it I've always had a soft spot for every aspect of it from the music (I put on the ost when showering lol) to the graphics the designs of rex and tops!, although i didn't understand English at the time so i just made up a story for the game and for the longest time i thought this was not a licensed game (although imo it still kind of it's own thing as the story is only loosely followed on upon for the bits and pieces I've seen of the movie), definitely need to sit and watch the movie this game's based on :D
This was such a fun watch

I remember playing this as a kid. Never could beat it, but of the levels I did play, I think the ice level was my favorite. I felt like I was the only kid that owned this in my neighborhood. And I sucked as the rex. Felt like purple triceratops was easier.

Played this all the time as a kid. It was one of the first games we got on our SNES. I remember playing it again in middle school, and I died at the final boss with my last continue. It was a heartbreaker. I always played as Tops rather than Rex. I thought the arrows were a lot easier.

Just played this again tonight. Stage six is the stuff of nightmares and bled me dry of continues. Was able to do it on my second attempt. Love the unique mechanic of getting on and off the dinosaurs for puzzles but it was just way too hard for its own good. Definitely one of the better licensed games out there still.

I never put it together in my head that they were connected when I saw it in the video store for rental. I guess I was just stupid. I probably would have liked it if I had tried it.

The visuals are so manipulating cuz of its flawless appearance but once u play it for yourself you'll see all the flaws that this game was poorly engineered with starting with the lagging jump button you're gonna have a lot of deaths and it's def gonna be related to the jump button and how it badly responds when u try to get em to jump and how abhorrently slow the attacks are and how the enemies can out speed u with ur slow attacks and some attacks don't even hurt the enemies even when it's supposed to this games cheats as well thats the other thing right there so ppl don't be easily manipulated by pretty anesthetic of this game it will piss u off
