When I was 4 years old I traversed on the Emperess I was allowed to sleep in a cot while my parents and brother had recliner seats, My mother said I was 3 years old so I could sleep in the cot and my feet stuck out through the bars of the cot, mum told me to keep my feet in so I wouldn't get court and have to sleep in said chairs. The Emperess was a beautiful lady and a fine vessel. Thank you for bringing back memories, much appreciated, I also remember the town crier, but had forgotten until you reminded me, Hobart is the best city in the country of Australia. I also with a bunch of friends played a practical joke involving the railway roundabout fountain, but I'll leave it up to you to figure it out on the account I don't want to incriminate myself, but let's just say it made news headlines.

I visited the model village in 96 when I lived in Hobart. It was interesting in the way those things are interesting, as a model and an anachronism. And yes, the building you visited is the one.

I first walked through the roundabout to the city centre when I was nine years old. I had a school case and a skipping rope. Earlier in the day I had lost my school blazer and was too frightened to return home and face the wrath of our tyrannical housekeeper! Instead I walked from Bellerive Primary School, over the 'old' bridge, past the domain and through the roundabout tunnels. I was trying to find my mother who worked at EIL. There was a little shop as you came out of the roundabout and being tired and upset, I went inside to ask for directions. A former policeman was having a coffee and when he heard my story offered to buy me a fanta. Of course I refused. Then he offered to take me to EIL and my mother. I blithely accepted the ride and was soon reunited with my mother ... and soundly told off. The blazer was found and returned to me the next day with some words of caution by the principal, Mr Lee. The roundabout tunnels filled with sounds of spurting water was to my mind, quite spooky back in 1968.

I'd assume prior to 1895. Time zones were standardised to GMT +10 as an eastern standard time in that year. Fun fact, China only has one time zone leading to massive differences in sun rise/set around the equinoxes, about 5 hours between easternmost and westernmost cities.

I remember hearing from my family about a murder/mystery that had taken place at the Railway Roundabout in the late 90's. Had to look it up to make sure. I found this quote from a man who found a snippet in the Mercury back in 2001.
"A man named William Fisher was found naked in the fountain at 7:45am on November 15th 1999, his body badly burned. Several burn marks were found across nearby streets. Many other things didn’t add up."
"The Mercury says “Mr Fisher’s shoes, a wallet, a $10 note, coins and personal papers were found along with burnt scraps of clothing. The scraps contained traces of petrol and turpentine but there was no container for the fuel.”
“Mr Fisher had third-degree burns to 30% of his body, and the burn marks showed he had been clothed. However, there were no burns on the palms of his hands as if he had tried to extinguish the flames, and his feet were also unmarked although he traveled 430m across rough terrain to the fountain.”
Apparently the media was trying to sweep this story along with others quite similar to this under the rug. There isn't much i can find on the subject apart from a few articles from the internet. There is a coroners report out there somewhere that my sister has found but i have since forgotten a lot of the information from it.
I know you're more into the makings of Hobart and how it came to be but I figure while the Fountain was a topic in this video that you might be interested in this case (which still has not been solved)

Semi-radical solution for the railway roundabout:
Rather than needlessly worry about population growth, let's yoink the carriageway out of the roundabout -- no more accidents, no more traffic, much more able to get to the fountain.
Put the train back in, turn the streets into urban ones which are slow-speed and accessible, and connect the whole city more tightly with diverse multimodality.
