This week, I take you through the complete entry process for Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2023 - series 9. The video includes a real time demo of the creation of my painting along with details of the entry form etc.
Materials: A2 Daler Rowney mixed media paper; Chroma Inc interactive acrylics (alizarin crimson, ultra-marine blue, cadmium yellow light, burnt umber, tinting white and titanium white); synthetic brushes (half inch flat, small round, small filbert); watercolour markers (orange and magenta).

I applied for the first time this year after watching your other video. I was also unsuccessful but it was really helpful to have a concrete deadline to work towards. I feel like I improved so much during the process. :)

Its just such a huge competition, its really a case of accepting so many and rejecting others and that doesn't mean you are not good enough . You are very talented without a doubt . I've seen some on the programme that I personally cannot warm to but its a matter of taste. The competition is for a commission and that's a lovely achievement but being an artist in your own right is just as validating. Keep up the work. The video was so interesting. I've learnt a lot from it too. I use acrylics and i've learnt much from you . Keep trying for PAOTY , i'm sure you're day will come. If not, well being on here is just as good. 🙂

Competitions, success and failure, these things come and go but painting and drawing are always rewarding, even when the artwork isn't quite as planned I still get a lot from the experience. I plan on entering again next year, really enjoying the mild pressure of the deadline the competition provides, it's encouraging me to explore different avenues. Hi there Mike ! From the beginning I was so excited about your entry ! I loved that you were thinking ‘outside the box’ once again on this occasion and doing something somewhat quirky in a way ! I remember one lady artist not sure if it was Inge who had a bird on her head and I just loved her portrait ! Your idea of using The Portrait of your Eye was ingenious ! Loved how you tackled the whole painting and the khaki colour for the freckles really worked ! The brush you were using seems to have a nice point to it ! Like that in a brush !! So many lovely brush marks and energy throughout ! The eye on the left looks like glass ! You got the glint and the sparkle just right !!I was so sure you would be chosen with this one and felt a bit deflated in the end that it did not quite make it ! Tough life sometimes although it was still fun and exciting preparing your entry ! Well, as they say, better luck next time ! Sometimes even during the judging I don’t agree with the judges’ choice , other times I pick the same winner as they do ! Pity I am not one of the judges as you would definitely be in for sure ! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful experience in so much detail ! Look forward to more videos and wish you more happy sunny days ! Hi Lorraine, thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video! I remember the bird on head artist and really liked that portrait and her work in general too. Glad to have entered, if I ever get the chance to go on the show I'll fully go for it but either way Im happy to just enter. Judges or customer opinions are just the nature of the the beast, I've had many pics that don't sell for a long time then for no apparent reason they become popular or the reverse happens. It's good in a way, keeps hope going in the slow times and tames the ego in the better times 😂 Pleased you liked the freckles colour, that bit worked better than expected. We've had heavy rain too, like you say, good to have art and RUclips at our disposal. Here's to a sunny week ahead! ☀️☀️☀️Thank you very much for watching 👍 👍 👍

Thanks very much, I'm happy with the painting especially the composition /concept, didn't manage to get a beltie in there but you can't have everything 😉 Self portraits are interesting to do though, one of the few times we perhaps see ourselves as others do, or at least, that's the way it feels sometimes. Why don't you try painting portraits of people you know, instead of copying from photos?
