  • "I'm not going to have it": Judge Barbara Bellis threatened to hold both the plaintiffs' attorneys and Alex Jones' attorneys in contempt of court if they don't stop the comments to each other in front of the jury. "Do you expect me to lay silently when they're directed at me inappropriately?" attorney Norm Pattis responded.

Any first year family law attorney would know that the appropriate way to deal with inappropriate comments by opposing counsel is to immediately stop what you are doing and when the other counsel is done speaking, ask the judge if you may approach the bench. Do NOTHING until that request is granted.

Then you're going to have a hard time. Many lawyers are scared of being civil or courteous allowing each person to speak in turn becauee they think it makes them appear weak. Some judges keep good order and shut down any talking over. Some judges lose control. Experienced lawyers know when to shut up. But most lawyers think their oath to "zealous representation" is not just a licnese but an order to be obnoxious, lie, cheat, steal, and try to be overbearing themselves in court. I've seen in my 20 years as a prosecutor the worse types of lawyers in court. And having grown up in the Barrios of Los Angeles, I have to control every fiber of my being not to pull them by their ties to the back of the court house for some counseling in common courtesy.

We should, yes. This was all established at the beginning of the case. Everyone agreed that the whole case could be filmed with audio, although Pattis wasn't keen on the side-bars being recorded, and has been reminded by the judge not to cover the microphone after one such incident during a side-bar.

Norm Pattis amazes me. He is the kind of defense lawyer I would be happy to represent me.
I confess when I first saw him and his hippie hair, I was feeling negative towards him. BUT!!!!....now. Wow... Mr Pattis has completely changed the energy of this trial. The judge now being more even-handed and even admonished the plaintiff's lawyers. The judge has started asking the lawyers to provide basis for objections. Norm Pattis is putting on a clinic how to handle a hostile court and change the momentum of a trial...
