  • The sequence of the life of the Swallowtail (Papilio machaon), from the egg to the adult insect, or imago for the entomologists. In a few minutes the synthesis of the marvellous prodigy of Nature that expresses all its ineffable power. Butterflies are diminishing frightfully because of human pressure on the habitat: protect them for future generations!

    Hi! Thank you for this informative video. About 2 years ago we had 7 caterpillars on our tangerine tree and all but one were eaten by a huge praying mantis. We put it in a dome with tangerine cuttings. It developed into a beautiful giant yellow swallowtail.
    This year we found one which is almost ready to make its chrysalis. To our surprise one of the cuttings had 5 eggs! All the baby caterpillars are safe in the butterfly dome, away from predators, and they are all doing well. It's such a feel good moment when you see them fly away into the distance.
    The birds, spiders, and praying mantis have plenty of moths and their caterpillars to eat in our garden.

    I live middle GA and I have 5 chrysalis right now after birds ate 15 of the 20 Swallowtail caterpillars that were munching on my parsley. Hopefully, I will be able to set 5 Swallowtails free in a week or so. Its still hot here but I’m worried about my house being cooler, low 70s. I’m not sure if this matters. I have also gathered several eggs & several tiny caterpillars from two of my citrus trees and I hope the butterflies will be successful as well. I planted lots of milkweed, and plants/flowers to attract pollinators this spring and I was rewarded! This is my first time raising butterflies so I am very excited and amazed! Fingers crossed! 😊 BTW, I’m definitely planting lots of parsley, dill, & fennel next spring and more milkweed.

    Hello Daniele,
    to begin with some comments, I agree with all that one can read at the end of your video. But the video itself is lacking a lot of details for instance: weaving of the silk pad used to connect the caterpillar and later on the cremaster of the chrysalis.
    The construction of the belt is also a very interesting and exiting event that I think shouldn't be missing and the pupation is too fast accelerated.

    • @danieledellamattia6275
      @danieledellamattia6275  6 лет назад +4

      Thanks for your comment, it's the same one you sent me for the Italian version. Consider that the attention span of the spectators requires a lot of synthesis and that in ten minutes it is difficult to put everything you want. If I can resume the weaving phases of the belt, perhaps I insert them in the next version.

    •  6 лет назад

      @@danieledellamattia6275 Hello Daniele,
      I know about what you are talking. But nevertheless people really interested DO NOT EXPECT that one can present a long lasting developmental event in just 3 minutes. In order to overcome this problem all my videos in YT which run more than 20 minutes got a lot of additional short videos for each important detail. You may see this when checking my videos about Papilio machaon in YT.

      I did not know that swallowtail caterpillars also ate lemon leaves, they usually eat plants from the family of umbelliferae. These include carrot, dill, fennel, etc. At this moment I have six caterpillars, I have put them in shelter because it is starting to get cold, I hope they become chrysalis before winter so the butterflies will be born in spring.

      @@marydiscuillo142, the swallowtail butterfly feeds on the host plant. Not all swallowtail butterflies eat dill and parsley. The swallowtail butterflies here mainly eat lemon leaves. They’re called citrus swallowtails.
      When I commented here early this year, I didn’t know this. When I found out, I had to go buy lemon trees to feed my caterpillars.

    Butterflies and human souls:
    "Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak [this] to your shame. But some [man] will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? [Thou] fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other [grain]: But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. All flesh [is] not the same flesh: but [there is] one [kind of] flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, [and] another of birds. [There are] also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial [is] one, and the [glory] of the terrestrial [is] another. [There is] one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for [one] star differeth from [another] star in glory. So also [is] the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit. Howbeit that [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man [is] of the earth, earthy: the second man [is] the Lord from heaven. As [is] the earthy, such [are] they also that are earthy: and as [is] the heavenly, such [are] they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law. But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. " 1 Corinthians 15
