The Big Stink then finally arrived just in time to film the explosion, and eventually, Bockscar landed at Okinawa, with so little fuel that two of the engines quit for fuel starvation.

I'm sorry for the Japanese victims and deaths of the Hiroshima A-bomb. On the other hand Japan was preparing for a total war with the aid of their civilians to fight with the Americans till the bitter end. Even the surrender of the Japanese, after the two A-bombs, was almost impossible for them and only when the emperor decided to surrender and the pledge that he could stay on, Japan capitulated. So with that in mind there's a strong case for those nuclear attacks on Japan as immoral it seems to be.

With regards to the Enola Gay exhibit, my feelings are complex. On the one hand, no matter how you come at this topic, Japan was losing the war, and could not turn it around in their favor (despite what their propaganda was saying). On the other hand, I do not think the bombs were the only reason the war ended so quickly (though it was a factor in Emperor Hirohito's decision-making). By early 1945, the Americans had air and naval supremacy over Japan, plus on August 9, 1945, hours before Bockscar bombed Nagasaki, the Soviet army was sweeping through Manchukuo (Manchuria). The Japanese high-command were certainly worried that if they kept fighting, then Japan would be divided like Germany had been (but it would have been more probable that Japan would be divided north and south, like Korea and Vietnam would be. Another thing was that the Americans had three options for finishing off Japan; 1. Nukes 2. Invasion 3. Blockade The invasion was the route no one wanted, since it would lead to the highest number of casualties (and the Soviets would take more land in the lead-up to the Cold War), the blockade was already happening with American subs sinking Japanese supply ships, and American B-29s, land-based escort fighters (P-51Ds and P-47Ns ), and carrier-borne fighters and bombers destroying what was left of the Japanese war-machine. The nukes were the option that much of the American brass (though there were notable exceptions, like Eisenhower) felt was the quickest way to end the war. It was not the only reason Japan surrendered, but a contributing factor nonetheless. The Enola Gay is currently displayed without much context of it's role in world history. Yes, the B-29 is a remarkably advanced airplane for it's time, but the Enola Gay should serve as a memorial to both it's crew and the victims of atomic warfare. The Enola Gay should be the reason we never use nukes in combat again, and eventually the reason nukes weapons become disbanded from warfare, like flamethrowers and poison gas have.

majorgeeek I am well aware that the Japanese surrendered largely due to the Soviet threat. I tried to make that clear because, after all, the Japanese saw what the Soviets did to the Tsar in 1918, and the leaders feared, rightly so, that the same would happen to the Emperor. The only reason the Emperor is still a role in Japan is because it was politically expedient to keep him there to restore ties with the Japanese people, even I know he and members of his family (like Prince Asaka for perpetuating the Rape of Nanking) should have been prosecuted like Tojo. As for the atomic bombs being used, I think there is plenty to debate about, and I think that Americans in general don’t get as much context as they should. But I have met with American veterans of WWII, and even though I think we should not have dropped the bombs, they told me that if the war didn’t end that abruptly, they would have been in Operation Downfall (set to begin in October 1945), and they likely would not have survived (Casualty estimates varied, but many felt the casualties would be equal to, if not greater than all American casualties up to that point in the war). Though I’m glad the war ended as soon as it did, nuclear weapons should be banned, specifically because of the suffering of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I am willing to debate with you as I am a history major in college with a penchant for WWII history.

In my opinion the USA planned invasion of Japan would never have gone ahead anyway because Truman had received Japan's official Offer of Surrender on August 10 which said the surrender was in response to the Soviet August Storm Invasion on August 9 - Sep2, 1945 so he knew he had to pull something out of the hat to entice the Japanese leaders to surrender before the Soviet army could gobble up more territory - the Soviet declaration of war was the key element to Japan's early surrender because it changed the calculation of how much time was left for maneuver. Japanese intelligence was predicting that U.S. forces might not invade for months. Soviet forces, on the other hand, could be in Japan proper in as little as 3 weeks. The Soviet invasion made a decision on ending the war extremely time sensitive. In fact Japan’s leaders had reached this conclusion some months earlier. In a meeting of the Supreme Council in June 1945, they said that Soviet entry into the war “would determine the fate of the Empire.” Army Deputy Chief of Staff Kawabe said, in that same meeting, “The absolute maintenance of peace in our relations with the Soviet Union is imperative for the continuation of the war.” the strategy of making a last stand at Kyūshū was based on the assumption of continued Soviet neutrality even PM Suzuki said August 13 when asked why they could not delay surrender for a few days “If we miss today, the Soviet Union will take not only Manchuria, Korea, Karafuto, but also Hokkaido. This would destroy the foundation of Japan. We must end the war when we can deal with the United States.” The Soviet invasion invalidated the military’s decisive battle strategy, just as it invalidated the diplomatic strategy. At a single stroke, all of Japan’s options evaporated. The Soviet invasion was strategically decisive - it foreclosed both of Japan’s options - while the bombing of Hiroshima (which foreclosed neither) was not.

And other war atrocities, from the Rape of Nanking, to Unit 731, to the Bataan Death March and many, many more show the Japanese Empire for what it was: a brutal regime that did as much harm on the world stage as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Also, the mission to Nagasaki was bungled up in many ways, since they left with a fuel pump not working (so they couldn't use all the fuel in their tanks), they waited too long for the photo equipment plane (The Big Stink) to arrive, wasting fuel, then their primary target, Kokura (which was the secondary target for the Hiroshima mission) was obscured by cloud cover (they were ordered to drop the bomb visually, when they found a target), and when they finally reached Nagasaki, the bomb was was dropped 1.5 miles off target, resulting in the blast to be mostly confined to the Urakami Valley. The Big Stink then finally arrived just in time to film the explosion, and eventually, Bockscar landed at Okinawa, with so little fuel that two of the engines quit for fuel starvation.

This is a part of history, the plane dropped a weapon that killed many but, that doesn’t mean we should get rid of it, as it is history. We know that in the Nazi concentration camps millions of people were killed but that doesn’t mean we destroy the place, as it is history.
I'm sorry for the Japanese victims and deaths of the Hiroshima A-bomb. On the other hand Japan was preparing for a total war with the aid of their civilians to fight with the Americans till the bitter end. Even the surrender of the Japanese, after the two A-bombs, was almost impossible for them and only when the emperor decided to surrender and the pledge that he could stay on, Japan capitulated. So with that in mind there's a strong case for those nuclear attacks on Japan as immoral it seems to be.

With regards to the Enola Gay exhibit, my feelings are complex. On the one hand, no matter how you come at this topic, Japan was losing the war, and could not turn it around in their favor (despite what their propaganda was saying). On the other hand, I do not think the bombs were the only reason the war ended so quickly (though it was a factor in Emperor Hirohito's decision-making). By early 1945, the Americans had air and naval supremacy over Japan, plus on August 9, 1945, hours before Bockscar bombed Nagasaki, the Soviet army was sweeping through Manchukuo (Manchuria). The Japanese high-command were certainly worried that if they kept fighting, then Japan would be divided like Germany had been (but it would have been more probable that Japan would be divided north and south, like Korea and Vietnam would be.
Another thing was that the Americans had three options for finishing off Japan;
1. Nukes
2. Invasion
3. Blockade
The invasion was the route no one wanted, since it would lead to the highest number of casualties (and the Soviets would take more land in the lead-up to the Cold War), the blockade was already happening with American subs sinking Japanese supply ships, and American B-29s, land-based escort fighters (P-51Ds and P-47Ns ), and carrier-borne fighters and bombers destroying what was left of the Japanese war-machine. The nukes were the option that much of the American brass (though there were notable exceptions, like Eisenhower) felt was the quickest way to end the war. It was not the only reason Japan surrendered, but a contributing factor nonetheless.
The Enola Gay is currently displayed without much context of it's role in world history. Yes, the B-29 is a remarkably advanced airplane for it's time, but the Enola Gay should serve as a memorial to both it's crew and the victims of atomic warfare. majorgeeek I am well aware that the Japanese surrendered largely due to the Soviet threat. I tried to make that clear because, after all, the Japanese saw what the Soviets did to the Tsar in 1918, and the leaders feared, rightly so, that the same would happen to the Emperor. The only reason the Emperor is still a role in Japan is because it was politically expedient to keep him there to restore ties with the Japanese people, even I know he and members of his family (like Prince Asaka for perpetuating the Rape of Nanking) should have been prosecuted like Tojo.
As for the atomic bombs being used, I think there is plenty to debate about, and I think that Americans in general don’t get as much context as they should. But I have met with American veterans of WWII, and even though I think we should not have dropped the bombs, they told me that if the war didn’t end that abruptly, they would have been in Operation Downfall (set to begin in October 1945), and they likely would not have survived (Casualty estimates varied, but many felt the casualties would be equal to, if not greater than all American casualties up to that point in the war). Though I’m glad the war ended as soon as it did, nuclear weapons should be banned, specifically because of the suffering of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I am willing to debate with you as I am a history major in college with a penchant for WWII history.

In response to your second paragraph, I wouldn't rely too much on first hand reports by veterans as they were not privy to top brass high level decisions made by both sides during ww2. In my opinion the USA planned invasion of Japan would never have gone ahead anyway because Truman had received Japan's official Offer of Surrender on August 10 which said the surrender was in response to the Soviet August Storm Invasion on August 9 - Sep2, 1945 so he knew he had to pull something out of the hat to entice the Japanese leaders to surrender before the Soviet army could gobble up more territory - the Soviet declaration of war was the key element to Japan's early surrender because it changed the calculation of how much time was left for maneuver. Japanese intelligence was predicting that U.S. forces might not invade for months. Soviet forces, on the other hand, could be in Japan proper in as little as 3 weeks.
The Soviet invasion made a decision on ending the war extremely time sensitive. In fact Japan’s leaders had reached this conclusion some months earlier. In a meeting of the Supreme Council in June 1945, they said that Soviet entry into the war “would determine the fate of the Empire.” Army Deputy Chief of Staff Kawabe said, in that same meeting, “The absolute maintenance of peace in our relations with the Soviet Union is imperative for the continuation of the war.” the strategy of making a last stand at Kyūshū was based on the assumption of continued Soviet neutrality even PM Suzuki said August 13 when asked why they could not delay surrender for a few days “If we miss today, the Soviet Union will take not only Manchuria, Korea, Karafuto, but also Hokkaido. This would destroy the foundation of Japan. We must end the war when we can deal with the United States.” The Soviet invasion invalidated the military’s decisive battle strategy, just as it invalidated the diplomatic strategy. At a single stroke, all of Japan’s options evaporated. The Soviet invasion was strategically decisive - it foreclosed both of Japan’s options - while the bombing of Hiroshima (which foreclosed neither) was not.

Let us not forget that before American bombers leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they dropped thousands of leaflets on Japanese cities, pleading for the civilian wherein to evacuate from the cities before the bombing runs, and some leaflets even informed the Japanese that the Soviets had declared war against them, and urged the civilian populace to force their leaders to surrender immediately. Compare that to Japanese aerial bombings in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, such as the Bombing of Chongqing, which took place from 1938-43. There, Japanese bombers bombed non-military targets such as residential areas, business areas, schools, and hospitals. And other war atrocities, from the Rape of Nanking, to Unit 731, to the Bataan Death March and many, many more show the Japanese Empire for what it was: a brutal regime that did as much harm on the world stage as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Do not take this to mean I intend to prevent scrutiny over U.S. atrocities against Japanese soldiers and civilians (those stories must be told as well), I am simply attempting to add context to this.

Negotiations failed. There was no declaration of war. By the time the Japanese received the articles from Secretary of State Hull the Japanese strike force was already on the way to Hawaii. @@majorrgeek thanks for the clarification. Both sides committed war crimes but in the end, the USA would never have the power it has today without a showing of force with this kind of proportion. Without these two bombs the USA would be a subsidiary to Russia and communism. ask yourself this: do you want to be able to have conversations like these? If yes, then you better thank the USA for doing some messed up shit, cuz otherwise you would never have the opportunity we have right here. It’s really quite simple: do you want a government that allows for you to think freely about this topic or a government that fabricated a story that you HAVE to believe in? Because you have been at this for 4 years it means you care about this topic so by caring and being able to share your opinion then you are inadvertently supporting the bombs.
TLDR: the bombs blocked communism from entering the USA so free speech and having your own thoughts on a matter would not be allowed. Everyone that uses free speech is inadvertently supporting the dropping of these bombs.
@@jtwimages- Truman could have accepted a provision in Potsdam allowing the Japanese to retain a constitutional monarchy EARLIER, this would have reduced Japan's reliance on Moscow and allowed Japan's surrender earlier through Kokutai - this move was supported by Grew, Stimson, Forrestal, Leahy even Marshall but Truman decided to follow through on his stupid insistence of unconditional surrender - and he could have justified his decision to the US public by arguing ending the war sooner "would have saved the lives of young Americans" and helped prevent the Soviets gaining ground in Asia - the surrender of Japan's forces was in fact conditional in the end and it is something Truman was forced to do because the bombings did nothing to stop the Japanese or the Soviet Forces - it was the Soviet invasion August 9-Sep2, 1945 which forced Japan's hand to surrender early not the bombs, which also had nothing to do with free speech and having your own thoughts

Take the civil war in North Central America in 1961, it's always taught in school is about slavery, but it wasn't about slavery till 2 years in to the civil war, so what was it about before that the first two years. I'm just saying there's always two sides maybe three or four. It's just pretty messed up for somebody wanting to find the truth. old saying comes to mind don't put all your eggs in one basket. @@sikusuyu - PH was in fact provoked by USA this is what FDR said “This continuing putting pins in rattlesnakes finally got this country bit.” - after FDR delivered his Hull note demand to Japan to withdraw all forces from China the "rattlesnakes" in Tokyo finally bit - FDR & top brass had intel and knew exactly what the Japanese were up to and allowed the surprise attack on PH to take place - Japan had to be seen as making the first overt move although the immensity of the attack "heavy beating" seems to have surprised FDR but even so PH has nothing to do with Hiroshima a deliberate attack on civilian population - grow up
