  • On this dual sport group ride we wind up and down some Ohio River Valley backroads on our way from Rising Sun to Madison, Indiana. Most people don't think of hills when it comes to Indiana but the southeastern part of the state (across the river from Kentucky) has beautiful rolling hills, similar to where I grew up in West Virginia. Today's group had my Yamaha XT225 along with friends on their WR250R, DRZ400, and DR650. As you'll see, the little XT is a great little bike for this type of riding, whether it's traveling 60+ on two-lane or chugging up and down the rolling gravel hills.

This channel is for motorcycle riders, mechanics, and enthusiasts who enjoy the simple joys of motorcycling, from dual sport riding to fixing up old bikes on a budget. My videos also consider the perspective of short motorcycle riders (when it’s helpful and relevant) in choosing and modifying bikes and equipment.
I’ve been hooked on motorcycles since 1975 when, at the age of 11, my dad brought home a shiny new Suzuki TM75 for me and a Suzuki TC185 for himself so that we could trail ride together in the hills of West Virginia. Since then I’ve worked as a mechanic, owned countless bikes, and even worked in the motorcycle industry for a number of years as a photographer and journalist. Now I do mainly video production and enjoy nothing more than making and sharing these motorcycle videos on RUclips.
Thanks again for watching. Ride safe!

I was wondering if you could tell me the names of the gravel roads you were on. I am a resident of Cincinnati and would like to try some of these roads myself.

Hey, Rob, on most of these rides I stitch together roads found on gravelmap.com - give it a look! For example, along 156 after Rising Sun we might head up Evans Hill Road, or before Madison up N. Bee Camp Road. You can put together some pretty fun routes just by exploring. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

What are you running for tires?

For the longest time I ran the Shinko 244 front and rear and think they do a great job for inexpensive tires. But I recently switched to a Kenda k270 rear and have plans to go with one on the front, also. I'm liking the k270 a bit more in the dirt.

It's always fun to go for a ride with like minded folks and it looks like you had beautiful day for it. If your looking for content I would like to see a video about your riding gear, I think it's time for me to invest in some safe riding gear like gloves and a jacket. Another great video thanks!

Thanks, Mike, it really was a beautiful day. That's a good idea about a riding gear video. I don't necessarily buy the most popular or trendy gear, I'm more into shopping deals and discounts for things with the necessary safety features. I'll collect my thoughts and try to come up with a video - thanks for the idea!

Hey, Sam, here's a response I just gave on another comment:
"It's an older Rapid Transit tank bag, actually, probably ten years old. From what I can see it's no longer available, unfortunately. What I like about it is the rectangular design (newer tank bags have a sort of humped design), it sits low so I can swing my leg over but it can be expanded taller, and it has plastic buckles that I've zip tied to the rack so it doesn't loosen. Sorry I can't point you to this exact model but hopefully that gives you something to look for."
I'm going to work on a video about all of the mods done to the XT so I'll cover it there, too. Thanks always for the comments!
