The story behind this music is very complicated I do not think I be able to explain it correctly but I’ll do my best.
Originally, “Les feuilles mortes” was composed (without the lyrics) for Roland petit, a young dancer of 21 years old who created a little ballet show named “Le rendez-vous” (1945).
“Les feuilles mortes” was also supposed to be the main soundtrack/opening of the movie of Marcel Carné who heard the melody when he went to Roland Petit dance show. Marcel Carné wanted to do a new movie but didn’t have any ideas, so when Marcel Carné saw the show of Roland Petit he was so inspired that he decided to create a movie named after the ballet show named “Les portes de la nuit” and he wanted to use the same melody used in the ballet show. So he asked Josheph Kosma (the compositor of the song) if he could use is music and he asked Jacques Prévert (poet and writer of the song) to makes lyrics for the song.
But at the end of the day, when the movie “Les Portes de la nuit” was released in 1946, it was a total flop, the music was not the main soundtrack of the movie and only snippets are hummed by Diego in the film (played by Yves Montand) then by Malou (played by Nathalie Nattier) and also played by an harmonica. Even though the melody is hauntingly beautiful , the music went totally unnoticed until years later when Franck Sinatra sang it and became an international hit. Even though in the meantime Yves Montant who loved the song, sang it in each of his concerts, but the people didn’t like the music and it was a flop each time. Yves even considered recording the music with the approval of his label but given the reception of the music among the public he changed his mind. After the music became popular 4 years later he sang it for many movies. Then Edith Piaf sang it in American radio in French and English but it also went unnoticed until the pianist Roger Williams recorded it in 1955.
