I have the same car as you and couldn't agree more. As for the ND3 mechanical updates, if they make the car drive even better...wow! Because I find nothing wrong with the ND2's steering or LSD. And in regard to Brian's comments about fuel economy: I just returned from a 1,000+ road trip from Seattle to the southern Oregon coast and back--and averaged 40.4 mpg for the trip. It's not why I got the car, but it's sure a great side benefit.

Soft top or RF? The best choice is what the buyer likes best. I not so long ago sold my 1980 MGB Limited Edition which I owned for 40 years. It was a true sports car with a rag top. The only assist was the power brake booster. Now I have an MX5 RF touring which I ordered in Machine grey with white Nappa leather. 90 percent of the time I'm driving with the top closed which pretty much gives me a coupe like feeling; closed it also adds additional structural stiffness which can be noticed if you pay attention. The other 10 percent of the time the top goes down to either show someone how it works or driving occasionally open. There is no right or wrong between soft top or RF. They are both good and give the buyer a choice so the best one is the one you like better.

I own a 2022 soft top MX-5, every drive is fun and adventure, and the boot/trunk, can hold a reasonable amount of stuff, the opening is narrow but it is deep and wide. Soft luggage, back packs etc fit in easily for a weekend away or longer road trip. I test-drove the RF, you pay more for the hard top version, and it does add weight to the car. I just prefer a fully open soft-top. Also keep in mind that if you upgrade to the model with Brembo brakes, you only get Brembos on the front wheels. The rear brakes are standard Mazda factory brakes which are perfectly adequate. Nice review!

The RF looks much better with top up, in my opinion. Styling is part of the equation. The drive is fine with the top down around town it’s only annoying at high speed on interstate or highway. Basically this car in either trim is FUN! That’s the bottom line it’s great fun in base trim with a soft top or in the highest trim with the RF instead of the ST. I am a bit bias since I have the RF in the Soul Red. Of course I opted for the manual, which makes the drive more exciting and engaging!

@@YuumyYuumi is not. Is about priorities. I'll give you an example, People in the UK get more mx-5s than the Spain and is because in Spain they want to get 'better' brands such as having a golf r with over 300hp or having and Audi S3, while in the UK people have actual more knowledge about what a car would make you feel, while in spain is more to try to get a car to show off if that makes sense. People (specially young people) in spain still would rather spend 40 or 50k on an upper brand like mercedes or bmw rather than spend 25 or 30k in an MX-5. Even though ut would make sense to get an MX-5, specially with such sunny weather.

I doubt it's based off the brand, I think many people in United States just like cars that have a bigger size, this is a small roadster, I'm sure many people love the bigger cars with the long hood design like Benz SL or SLS, or BMW Z4 or Mustang or Jaguar XK... The Lexus SC430 doesn't really have that long hood... United States people love cars with that size "presence" am sure besides the engine it's the reason many people like Dodge Chargers or Chrysler 300.

After owning three Dodge SRT Challengers, and now a Charger Scat Pack wide body, I think it will be tough to lose all of the cabin, trunk, and overall space provided. Then, I think of the lack of crush space in case of an accident, and there's no way to get around all of these facts, except for maybe the ability to possibly avoid getting into an accident in the first place, due to excellent handling and the ability to squeeze through tighter areas. One of the best reviews on this Mazda MX-5. All those youngsters that buys BMW, Audi and VW, they should consider test driving this MX-5. Firstly, they will become a better driver and secondly they would know what’s it like to drive reliable bulletproof vehicle. Kudos to Mazda for improving this MX-5 very incrementally from generation to generation…also thank you Mazda for not going woke with Hybrid or EV. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The Miata is best suited for people that can afford a second car as a weekend Toy.
BRZ/86, Civic Si/Integra, WRX, Mazda 3, Elantra N, GTI, and the Mustang Ecoboost are much more useable as a fun only car on a budget.
BMWs aren't unreliable anymore, just expensive on maintenance. The B58 is probably one of the best modern performance engines tbh.
I would definitely argue the BRZ/86 matches the fun factor. High reviving NA Boxster, better handling, and just as driver focused.
And too boot there's a lot more head room for modding with the new gens.

Unless I am mistaken, in the US the GT trim and the Club trim come with the same suspension. It seems to me that what you are driving is the GT (you have GT seats) with an option package for the Brembo and BBS. That is not available in the US where the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package is an option on the Club. Of course, the club doesn't get adaptive headlights and dimming, homelink mirror. Are the recaros a stand-alone option in Canada? Why does Mazda configure differently for different markets?

Secondly take a look at videos on YT about the degree to which (as with all Mazda MX5’s historically) these, even relatively new, rust like hell underneath. Brilliant car - brilliant review as per usual! I have an nd2 6mt club with Recaro/Brembo/BBS package in gray. Really like the color but soul crystal red would be the first choice for me too. Think the non Recaro seats are a little disappointing (find them a tight squeeze for larger than avg backs/shoulders.
Mine is a ST and I too think that’s the way to go. The RF cuts into headroom a bit and it does give you wind buffeting as you mentioned. The 102 lb weight penalty is likely not something most drivers (if not all) would detect, but it still bothers me to add roughly 4% more weight for something non essential to the car. I also absolutely love the simplicity of the soft top to operate manually! The quality of the insulation in the ST is light years better than the NB I had years ago (which I otherwise loved) and even better than my previous NC (which I didn’t exactly love as much).
I trust you when you say that KPC and the new LSD are good adds for the driving experience….but I’d need to lose a couple grand to sell mine and then add $9k more to buy new. I’m guessing the seat of the pants difference (for a road only, non-tracking driver) is not terribly material.

I purchased a '24 GT soft top back in June, my 2nd soft top manual Miata, and soft top is the only way I'd go, personally. The RF looks amazing, exotic even, but it has some drawbacks that I couldn't overlook... 1) it operates way too slowly 2) the 6 mph speed lockout is way too slow 3) the wind buffeting (caused by those buttresses) at speeds above 45mph or so is deafening 4) it's hard to justify the $2800 up-charge 5) concerned with long term reliability. I chose the soft top (twice) mostly for its value, simplicity and speed of use while in motion. All of that said, the Miata is an absolute joy with either top. Just be sure to take a long test drive (incl higher speeds) in the RF before buying one.

While I considered an RF, I went with the true convertible. Why? If I lived in an area that gets bad weather or one where I may have to park in sketchy areas, I would have considered the RF more seriously, but I do not. Also, I drive with the top down at all times unless I happen to get caught in the rain. (Maybe twice over the last five years.) Also, the RF with the roof retracted, it makes more noise because the wind swirls behind your hear. So, the RF was just not a fit for me.

No doubt a great car, and kudos to Mazda for their philosophy to keep sweating incremental improvements. And there is no substitute for the light weight. Can't think of anything else in the mainstream market that comes within 300 lbs and is a sports oriented ride. I drove one when I got my BRZ, and was a little too tall. That and unless driving solo, no place for coats, purses, etc. They really charge a premium for the Brembos and Bilstein package too, and at that time, didn't put the LSD in the base. I know "those days" are gone, but once I sprung for the "Limited" trim in my BRZ, (2017), the "Performance Package" was only a $ 1200 USD option. That brought the Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes, and different wheels, that may be a bit wider to make room for the Brembos. No regrets. We took a weekend trip over the mountains in the BRZ, and along the way, passed a Miata coming the other way. I asked my wife, "Know what we'd be doing if we had the MIata instead? Driving the Forester." LOL. That said, now that I don't commute and the BRZ is strictly a toy in the 3-car fleet, I have not ruled out someday owning a Miata rag top. Just legendary greatness. Thanks for reviewing the RF.

Great review, Brian. I have not driven a ND3, but have driven ND1 and ND2, both RF and soft top, and both 6MT and auto. While I like the look of the RF, I don't like the driving experience as much as the soft top. The open roof feels more like a targa top than a convertible, and the wind noise from the RF pillars is highly annoying. And since I buy cars to drive them, not look at them, the RF appearance doesn't improve the drive, but the wind noise takes away from it.
The automatic transmission, while being a good unit, totally takes away from the experience you describe of man and machine becoming one. There is nothing that an automatic transmission and paddle shifters can do to replicate the 6MT experience, so if you absolutely need the automatic transmission, just stop trying to convince people that the "car and driver as one" experience is still there. It isn't!
I disagree with your statement about the suspension being something perfect that cannot be improved upon in the aftermarket. There are some very well designed aftermarket suspensions that do a great job of matching stiffer spring rates with sophisticated damper valving, and really do improve the suspension performance while not detracting from daily driving comfort.
That said, I think the majority of ND3 buyers would be best served by purchasing the package as you recommended, and just learn to drive it to its capabilities rather than to add mods because forum people rave about the mods. The only mod that can really improve the driving experience is DRIVER TRAINING! Spend less money on mods, and more money on driver training, and you will be rewarded tenfold for your investment.
I still recall an auto magazine story from the 1980s when journalists were testing out the new Toyota Supra at a track. One journalist wrote how he was tearing up the track in the new Supra, but noticed a Toyota Corolla pulling onto the track. And after several laps, the Corolla caught and passed the journalist in his Supra.
After the track session the journalist walked over to the Corolla...and Dan Gurney stepped out of it. Hahahaha!!!!

Your second paragraph is dead wrong, and illustrates "all or nothing" thinking. The AT (when put into manual mode) and shifted with either the shifter or paddles does deliver a "car & driver as one" experience - I know, I experience it every time I drive my '23 soft-top. It may not be the same as a manual, but it has its own merits. I just wish the engine put out more HP, and that the sway bars were a "little" bit stiffer.

I bought a new ND in 2016 because of the looks in the red with white? leather seats but was disappointed with the handling, I had assumed that would be the cherry on the cake but found it rolled too much and that weight transfer made it feel skittish. I had it for 4 years and replaced the coil springs, wheels and tyres which helped a lot, also replaced the complete exhaust and got a tune. We got the LSD as standard here and I did like that.
I replaced it with a car that I had avoided thinking it was too heavy to handle well, a 370Z and for me that had great handling with reserves beyond my aging capabilites. Because it was planted with neglible roll I could also catch it when the rear end[LSD] stepped out which inspired confidence where the MX-5 seemed to do its own thing. Just my thoughts.

@@TrojanRabbit521 I bought one of the first GT86's on the market and the steering was the best of any car that i've driven, so responsive.
The 1467kg for the 370Z has to come from the combination of a very solid body shell plus an engine, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres that are big, powerful, built to last and all capable of handling double the power without modifying the guts of that wonderful engine.
The GR86 is great value and at $10,000 less than an MX-5 on the road is a no brainer. The engine upgrade and gearbox mods fixed it's previous shortcomings and it has a real presence about it, way above the cost.
Currently i'm driving an i20N which is $10,000 less than the GR86 on the road. It has to be one of the best back road cars on the market and is very engaging to drive. The cherry on the top is that it's practical, has a spare wheel and has averaged 6.5L/100km over the 18,000km that ive had it.

Always has been and always should be. 2nd, to me, the RF just looks too much like an Opal GT, and that isn't a compliment. The RF adds weight, but is stiffer (especially after I have added all the chassis reinforcement available). Toss in lightweight wheels (8kg down), 2-piece front rotors and calipers (4kg down), and lithium battery (15kg down), the net weight difference is minimal. (All, at a stiff cost of US$5,000.) Stiffer chassis and lower unsprung weight transform the handling, even though the suspension and tires are OEM stock. My friends owning ND, NB, and NC's can't believe how good the handling is, with stock tires and stock (soft) suspension. My other cars (2016 Porsche Cayman and 2018 BRZ) have stronger chassis and more power, but the RF is definitely the most agile and fun. The worst feature of the RF: blind spot (in the quarter rear). At least I can drive the RF any time, any where, and never worry about rain or (light) snow.
