Very sad you can't enjoy living in that dream place...wonder if in spain you can get another place to fulfil your dreams! Come to north of Portugal and you can find lots of places no one bothers you and renovate ruins and live off grid!

It is Europe. As a European I can't imagine that land without regulations exist here. They were in Spain and bought obviously "suelo rústico" (land intended for agriculture and forestry, not for a homestead). There was no habitable house, so it is no surprise that they aren't allowed to live there. I guess the new building was declared a warehouse, if done at all. For a normal house an architect and building permit is needed. Nothing new or unknown in Spain.
Probably someone with money and influence is behind it all…to get you off this property. They or someone they know wants it. It wouldn’t be unheard of. It happens in my country.
