Nice Job ! I just did the same fixing but mine HP8920A was still working well... just that electrolitic bad smell, I imediately recognized there was a problem. Technician Nose is one of the most usefull "instrument" that cannot miss in a good Laboratory :) Now i'm waiting for the spare parts.
I have a 1500 that I got back in the mid-90's. Long story about the analog attenuator that I had IFR replace with the digital one ($$$$); had some strange goings on recently doing VHF/UHF SINAD tests that I think are heat related...just too lazy to dig into it (I do have the complete service manual) since I can do the same thing with a SINNADER 3 and the RS RF generators I have.
Nice video! Do you know where can I find the schematics for the HP8920A power supply? It looks a lot alike HP8921A. Mine has some resistors and transistors blown and I can't see the markings on them. Thanks!

@@IMSAIGuy Thank you for your quick reply. I've downloaded the Component level document, but it's missing the A9 Power supply chapter, which is exactly what I need. It has the A10 Power supply regulator, but my burn is on A9 power supply. Is there another place where I can find someting about power supply components? Thanks!
@@IMSAIGuy I've searched for this part number a lot but I couldn't find a single schematic about it. I found some pictures and I hoped I will be able to read the color bars from the pictures but they were to blurry and while searching for pictures or diagrams I reached your video. Thank you.
My HP8921A at RF Geneator....weak signal ini output tha doesn't strong to trigger spectrum analyzer do you know which module is fail ? if module RF Gererator synthesizer fail, must be replace new module or it can be repaired ? Thank's
try to output on the RF in/out connector (N-type) then the duplexer output (BNC). if both are dead then the RF module is probably bad. you cannot find schematics for the 8921 but you can find component level documentation for the 8920 which should be the same. It might me hard to work on without an extender card though.

Good repair I have a Marconi 2955 and a stabilock test set.
Marconi stuff is great
Glad it worked out...my IFR is giving me signal generator issues...sigh, hope it's an easy fix like yours was.
which IFR do you have 1200? Signal generator trouble shooting should be ok. better than a bad spectrum analyzer.

that's a fancy one. I take back what I said about a easy fix......
the display on mine started flickering and flashing. all it was was the internal intensity control needed cleaning.
I see this repair in the future for my HP8920B. Do you have any suggestions for getting those parts out without tearing up the foil?
Get a good solder sucker like a Hakko FR300
What was wrong with the power supply? I mine won't turn on.

it had missing traces?

I did some looking. The power supply was desingned and bought from a 3rd party so HP did not include any component level info on the A9.
@@davidwwjd The power supply part number is 08920-61815
I've seen them on eBay before but not now. don't remember the price.

I wonder what the life expectancy of the smaller capacitors are. I mean, the smaller size must mean they made a compromise with some other factor...

oh, and make sure you don't have any AM FM modulation being applied. you need full modulation to get power out
HP8920A Spectrum Analyzer Self Cal Failed. Error=242 ?
yo tengo un error parecido, Voltmeter calibration failure error = 242...
