I've noticed that mangoes generally have a hint of a lot of fruit flavours. I've tasted hints of lemon, pineapple, banana, watermelon, carrot, pears, but the interesting thing has been that different flavours become prominent as the fruit ripens. Mangoes are complicated.
I agree, they can vary a bit from tree to tree, season to season. and of course when you pick them and the stage of ripeness when you eat them. you can have 24 mango trees and no two varieties are exactly the same. which makes them such a fun fruit to eat.
Go to Tonga or Fiji to try tava(Pometia pinnata), Nakatabola(Dracontomelon vitiense), fekika(Syzygium megacarpum), our strange banana varieties(hopa, siaine, etc) and of course our mangoes
@@WeirdExplorer Fiji has quite a bit of jungle left but if you want to get to virgin forest in Tonga you have to visit 'Eua island which is only an hour boat ride from the main island if you take the Māui. Very cool, thanks for sharing the info on these mangos. Jared you should go down to Mango Mania in Homestead. I went last year and tried about 30 types from all over the world in one hour. Then we went back to Dr. Campbell's homestead and tried his top selections. My favorites overall were Coconut Cream and Orange Sherbet.
Just gonna put it out there - actually getting a description of what these things taste like won't make or break the videos for me. It's not like having someone else describe the taste really gives you any crucial info, unless by chance it's really something unusual or you're planning to eat it yourself. Just really enjoying the excellently done documentary on the coco de mer and the culture around it.
I live in Denmark and while we really don't have much fruit that can grow here besides apples we DO have the best strawberries in the world! I've had strawberries all over the world but none so sweet as the ones grown in Danish soil. I don't know what it is that makes them so sweet and fragrant but they truly are unique.
I won't argue that it's the best mango, but I think it's pretty cool: the R2E2 mango from Australia. They're not the prettiest, but things are huge (600+ grams!), and always have a great texture (firm but not very fibrous). They also have a good shelf life, and are usually cheaper than the other varieties, at least in Australia. Sweet and mild. I love them because you just get so much mango, very economical, and you can sit and eat a lot of it without it getting sickly sweet. During the summer I'll just have cut one up and have it for both lunch and afternoon snack. They were developed in 1983 at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry research station in Bowen, Queensland. They're a cross between the Bowen (AKA Kensington Pride, also originating from the town of Bowen) and the Kent, and are named after the original experimental trees’ row designation. Not very creatively named, but hey. I don't know about getting them in the US, but we apparently export a lot of them to Asia, so next time you're headed in that direction, they might be something to look out for. They're not very fancy, but I think they'd be an interesting fruit for a video. Australia might be a good destination for your fruit travels. We have some giant (inedible, decorative) fruits, some great agricultural regions, and bush tucker (traditional Indigenous cuisine). Macadamia nuts originated here! There's a town in Victoria called Bacchus Marsh that has a lot of fruit and vegetable farms. One of them advertises that you can pick your own strawberries from their "trees" (strawberry plants grown vertically in PVC pipes lol).
Jared has already tried the R2E2 (At least, probably an R2E2), and at the time it was his favourite mango. I wonder how it stacks up now that he's tried so many more.
Super interesting to learn that Valencia Pride is Steven’s favorite mango! It’s not one that I usually see at the top of most people’s lists, though I’ve heard it was good. I’ve been really wanting to try one of the coconut flavored mangoes and I’m excited to hear VP is one of those because I’m growing it and might get fruit for the first time this year. I was under the (apparently false) assumption it was a basic mango flavor with a little of the turpentine-y flavor profile so you totally just made my day! Yay!
@@brandon9172 no unfortunately I didn’t this year. I was in the middle of a move and I think I interrupted the flowering/fruiting cycle so nothing every set and grew to maturity. I also had a bad year for my other trees which have always fruited so maybe there was some other factor at play as well. Next year i should have them on the ground hopefully, or at least in a permanent spot so I’m crossing my fingers I can finally taste them! I’m looking forward to it!
If eating 6 mangoes at a sitting is a problem for you take me to Madagascar with you next time. LOVE MANGOES!! ( only thing I miss about living in Florida )
In Guatemala there is a mango that its flesh is like threads, which get in between your teeth. Its been ages since I ate it, dont remember its name but it tastes good. I always got annoyed by the threads though.
I live in California and I grew a small mango tree which eventually gave a small fruit. I didn't like it. The fruit had a funny smell and tasted like cheese and turpentine. My neighbors from South America though loved them and were familiar with them.
I’ve seen you eat lots of mangos. I would definitely recommend the Maya mango from Israel. I haven’t eaten mangos from all over the world like you have but I did live in Israel and my friend and I were obsessed with them. I believe they are only a summer fruit but we would go to the shuk (street market, just like any of the ones you’ve been to all over) and stock up on them.
A good mango should have a fragrant exterior. The ones I find in our stores here in Arkansas were picked green and have no fragrance. Among the mangos we have here the little yellow ones are the sweetest. All mangos are HUGE in digestive enzymes, and the juice will instantly neutralize insect stings.
Try South Indian Banganapali. It's my favourite. It has a mild coconut flavour. Roman8a was a great mango but not to be seen now. It was a cool one. Sakarakutti is good too.
You both should come to South America! When it comes to passionfruits and few exotic fruits we got,I would say come to my country,Paraguay...when it comes to figs, palta, grapes, apples and pears Chile and Argentina;mangoes, nuts, papaya, coconuts, and wild varieties Brazil....we are very rich in fruits!
Those mangoes look awesome, the ones I've had from the supermarket in the UK haven't been properly ripened, they're firm pale and not very flavoursome.
I lost my Valencia pride tree, a couple years ago, due to the hurricane. huge tree. delicious mangoes, that hint of coconut really makes a mango taste good. I am considering putting in the new Zill variety E-4, it is supposedly very coconuty also, and tree is more manageable. but another reason is the fruit stays green when ripe, this will help against the 2 legged mango bandits.
Have you tried moknaz, peebas from madagascar those are rare fruit from there as well. And from mangoes you can find more than 20 differents mangoes in Madagascar if you go to the west of the country. Diego mangoes is the best love it.
What steps do you take to ensure food safety on your world travels and fruit tastings? I know I saw you use bottled water and then dip your fruits in hydrogen peroxide for 30 seconds or more. Good luck and safe travels, I love your videos!!
the hydrogen trick I use when its something I cant peel. for mangoes it wasnt such a concern. Otherwise I just vet anything I eat to the best of my abilities. If something looks questionable, like its been sitting around too long or if a restaurant isn't busy, then I also give it a pass. being vegetarian probably helps a bit as well since it rules out spoiled/undercooked meat.
