    The legend around the Goedendag (Good Day) is when the French invaded Flanders to suppress a rebellion, Flemish rebels would seek out French citizens by saying Good Day, or Goedendag to strangers. If the stranger replied in a French accent, they would use the improvised weapon to bash the Frenchmen, hence how the weapon got the name.

    • @nagh887
      @nagh887 Месяц назад +10

      Goedendag specifically refers to the capped club with a spike, and is generally more of a 14th century weapon, I forgot the proper term for the 15th century one but it’s better to just call these things spiked clubs
      Edit: These things could’ve been called cudgels, but that’s more of an umbrella term for clubs of this period

    • @aquarius5264
      @aquarius5264 Месяц назад +4

      @@nagh887 i thought the same & was unable to find a better term than spiked club for those things. i've never even seen clubs like this outside of the game, do you know of any historical references the devs used?

    • @mrzacnono
      @mrzacnono  Месяц назад +10

      I think I actually finally found the answer to what exactly the "Goedendag" in Half Sword actually is. It looks like it is a Plançon à picot. The Wikipedia on it notes that the Goedendag and the Plançon à picot are weapon relatives and they may often be confused for one another since they were carried alongside one another in battle.

    • @nagh887
      @nagh887 Месяц назад

      @@mrzacnono you can definitely use that term if you want, but that just means spiked club in English, so as native English speakers I feel like it’d be better just to call it a spiked club (I consulted a French person on this)

  • @tommeakin1732
    @tommeakin1732 Месяц назад +14

    As someone who's a pretty massive European medieval weapons nerd, names can be pretty, well, unclear. A great deal of the names folks, nowadays, like to very neatly slap on a weapon are not historically backed up. Sometimes names are straight up modern. Very often, names are much more narrowly and specifically used nowadays as we like to neatly pigeonhole history; somewhat understandably. A lot of the time more exotic (often French) words win out over historical English words. I like to use historical names when I can, but sometimes it's easier to use more modern words as they are just useful for us to talk about wide spans of history.
    To give two examples: I like to use "pollaxe", historically; which means that 19:02 is a pollaxe even though it doesn't have an axe - and that bothers many modern folks lol. On the other hand, damn big two handed swords (too big too be worn, and were most often either used on the battlefield, or by bodyguards) were seemingly often just called "two handers" in English, which isn't that helpful in the modern day where we like to draw neat lines between "longswords" and "bigger longswords" lol. Therefore, I like to use "greatsword" (a modern word) as it feels rather clear and broad enough to talk about a whole category.
    At the end of the day, we have words so we know what each other are talking about. If you're not confusing others, you're doing it right enough. I think the big problems come when you try and use a historical word that is already taken by something rather different.

    • @mrzacnono
      @mrzacnono  Месяц назад +2

      Wow, that is a really great write up! Words are living beings. They are born, evolve, die off entirely and are sometimes resurrected from the dead! Like you were saying, it is hard for us to really pin down a lot of these names for medieval armaments as, first, these aren't every day objects used and discussed and, secondly, the words for these armaments used back then were wide ranging. Even outside of armament terminology, to put it bluntly back then English was really mixed up! English was a mashed up language of English itself, French and German. English was heavily divided by class and region. A northern Englishman would call an egg, an egg, and a southern Englishman would call an egg, an eyren. Yet these people still spoke the same language and were very well able to communicate (for the most part). As you said, I'm sure this was done heavily to armaments then.

    • @imp3r1sh3ble
      @imp3r1sh3ble Месяц назад

      isnt it poleaxe?

    • @tommeakin1732
      @tommeakin1732 Месяц назад

      @@imp3r1sh3ble Some words can have fuzzy roots, but I think we're fairly confident that "poleaxe" is a more modern twisting of "pollaxe", as "pole" is a more common word than "poll", and still makes sense for the weapon. "Poll" is a word for "head", and is only really used nowadays for a survey/vote (as in "a head count"); and for "pollarding"; where tree branches are heavily cut back.
      So "pollaxe" kind of means "headaxe". The thing is, I don't think it's 100% why it got that name, but I *believe* that, back then, there was a tool for killing livestock that was maybe straight-up called a "pollaxe", and I *believe* the tools had both axe blades and other heads (maybe hammers or picks) on the back. Don't just take my word for it though

    Found your channel not too long ago, but I've only been lurking since. I've noticed you often get your weapons stuck in the enemies after a stab or by just, y'know, using the goedendag, and I've found that simply using the double-click stab easily dislodges the weapon and allows you to skip the tug of war with what's basically a corpse, I found it rather useful for buhurts, carnages or brave stands. Also, great video as always!

    19:15 that type of polearm would generally be referred to as a poleaxe, even though it doesn't have an axe head that is the general term for a short polearm used by knights like this. Another more specific term could be Bec de Corbin, or Crows Beak in French, a shorter two handed hammer with a long hook, or beak, on one side. The fencing master Hans Talhoffer has drawings of this type of poleaxe in his manuscripts if you want to see an image from the time period they were used

But id prefer lamellar plates, riveted scale plates, studded leather, lamellar armor in shape of mirror armor (coolest thing ever! Google hellenistic overlapping lamellar armor), greek plate armor, lorica segmentata. So much variety, i hope they include unique armor sets rather than standard 16th century gothic plate armor
