  • The birth of the electrical industry began with the sale of a magnetic separator used in iron mining in Ironville, NY. Made by Joseph Henry (the founder of the Smithsonian) it used some of the world's first powerful electromagnets to magnetize removable spikes that combed through ore, pulling out the purest of magnetite. Prior to 1831 electricity was merely an area of scientific experimentation. Commercializing electrical inventions allowed the explosion in growth of innovations. Excerpt from our full 19 minute documentary on the use of iron in electrical devices: "Iron in our Electrical World".
