Konnichiwa lads. I can sense that you preferred Erwin over Armin. It's rightfully so, but remember what I told you... REMEMBER WHAT LEVI SAID TO ERWIN (before the charge). That's why Erwin said ARIGATOU to Levi. That's why Levi picked Armin. Erwin's the PAST... Armin's the FUTURE.

The decision is so well physically represented, too: Erwin wants to go *down* into the dark, damp hole in the ground. He's ashamed to admit it to Levi. Even as he's dying, his head is in the past, racked with guilt for asking the question that got his father-and eventually so many of his comrades-killed. Armin wants to go forward, out, *past* the walls and into the huge world outside of them. He tells his friends this with wonder and joy in his voice.
When he is dying, he isn't thinking about how he was tempted to abandon the mission and seek out his own dream-he fully entrusted it to Eren.
The choice is just so obvious from a storytelling and literary perspective! It's crazy to me that so many people even think it's a real debate.

I wouldn't say that - from what I understood, Levi saw Erwin accept his death for them to defeat the Beast Titan. But Levi didn't see Armin accept his death as well (he did say that Eren will reach the sea on his behalf). From my understanding, Levi's perspective probably showed him that Armin may have more to live for than Erwin. I like to think that it is the reason why he chose Armin, not because Erwin's dream ends in the basement. I don't even think it would end in the basement because that's when the real story begins. Erwin is not someone who would look into the basement and say "understandable, have a nice day" and ditch everything else just because his short term dream is achieved. That is why one of the biggest "what if" scenarios in AOT is if Erwin was chosen.

My take on Erwin vs Armin C+p of my comment on another vid *warning veryyy long post
Erwin was being eroded from the inside out by all the guilt he felt from sending his comrades to their death for his own selfish motives. However he was unable to stop pursuing his dream, unable to stop himself from being enslaved to this dream because his dream was what he was ‘drunk on’ and not only did it give him his strong sense of purpose, it was powerful enough for him to be able to throw aside his humanity in order to keep pushing through his guilt.
During their final conversation Levi saw how tormented Erwin was as he grappled between his duty as a commander and his selfish desire to abandon the mission and go to the basement. By that point Levi had already developed an inkling that Erwin’s motives might not be as noble or righteous as he may have once thought. But it wasn’t until that very moment, that Levi truly understood just how deep Erwin’s obsession ran, how mercilessly this vice-like dream was suffocating him, and how much it was consuming him. As his long time friend and comrade, Levi saw that Erwin’s misguided motives made him someone who was pitiful rather than hateful. Even when Erwin, for the first time, showed hesitation and childish selfishness at a moment when his soldiers desperately needed him, Levi’s initial look of absolute disbelief and incredulous ‘huh?’ quickly changed to a face of genuine sympathy and commiseration. During a rare moment of vulnerability shown by an old friend who’d always been defined by his stoicism, he was beyond stunned. But nevertheless he still understood the pain of the pressure Erwin is under and how tragic his dilemma is. Levi decided to do him the favor of making the difficult decision Erwin hadn’t been able to bring himself to make. This all ties back to what Erwin told Levi in the No Regrets, OVA: when a person hesitates or allows themself to wallow in regret, they are dulling their future decisions and allowing others to make their choices for them. But in turn, Levi’s decision did also give Erwin a chance to redeem himself before death. Hence, Erwin thanking him with a face of relief, peace, and acceptance. In a sense, Levi fulfilled Erwins’ desire for judgment (often misunderstood as a desire for forgiveness). It is easy to ask for forgiveness, but it is difficult to endure the punishment needed to earn it. The surmised purpose of ‘judgment’, is to bestow punishment on those who commit immorality and evil. As a result, to the remorseful sinner, judgment alludes to a possibility for redemption through punishment, something that Erwin not only desired, but also secretly believed he deserved.
If we want to tie in Armins’ “Those who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t change anything” philosophy: Erwin sacrificed his dream in order to change himself. He wanted to finally shed the righteous commander mask he’s been hiding behind all these years and for the last and only time, be a true commander who is truly fighting for his soldiers and humanity, not his own goals. Notice he does not parrot his usual ‘dedicate your hearts’ line. He never actually was sincerely dedicating his heart to humanity’s cause. They were empty words and he knew it. By throwing away his script and mask, he was able to finally be honest not only to his soldiers, but also to himself.
The final factor that made Levi decide to let Erwin go was when he saw that even at deaths’ door, Erwin was still obsessing over his dream, still unable, probably unwilling, to let it go and make his peace. Many misinterpret the final rooftop scene as Erwin slapping Levi’s hand away and rejecting the syringe but that definitely wasn’t what that scene was about. He subconsciously raised his hand because in his delirium, he was reliving the moment his obsession first began and reflecting on the day he asked the teacher *that* question. Surprisingly, it’s actually the first time it’s fully revealed what Erwin had even asked that day. It’s been teased again and again how he’d raised his hand in class in his childhood, presenting a very controversial question, but what that question exactly was, was never explicitly revealed to viewers until this scene. It really sits among some of the most powerful and emotional moments in this show imo.
Before leaving for the mission, Erwin himself had admitted that he had no idea what he was going to do once he fulfilled his dream of seeing the basement. Whereas Armin on the other hand was still full of dreams to be drunk on. Big dreams that have the capacity to inspire *everyone* to keep pushing forward along with him. Armin was ‘looking’ far beyond the walls, all the way to the ocean whereas Erwin’s vision was limited only up to the basement. A dream that stops at the Zhiganshina basement just simply isn’t enough to lead humanity towards the direction in which they now need to go, which is beyond the walls and forward. Erwins’ dream was a source of torment for him while Armins’ dream is a beacon of hope for everyone.
Levi understood that letting Erwin go was the greatest mercy. He would no longer need to suffer under his dream (that honestly had become more like a curse at that point), or live every day wracked with guilt, or continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of making the most difficult decisions for everyone, while still having to endure being called a devil or a demon. Someone in the comments for another video put it quite nicely - ‘If Levi had brought Erwin back, it would have been a betrayal and act of disrespect to his conviction’. For Erwin this was an incredible moment of long awaited emancipation and relief from a huge burden he’d been shouldering for most of his life. Erwin wanted to make his peace after a long struggle and even if it took a lot for him to get to that point, and even if he himself was still wavering inside, at the end of the day it was still his personal decision. Going against it would have been the same as dismissing his determination and resolve. Erwin himself already knew what the right thing to do was from the start but he just needed someone to give him that final push and affirmation that it was time to let go of his childish vice. With his wish fulfilled, he would have lived life an empty man left with nothing because he no longer has a dream to chase. Even if he had survived, it’s likely he would have never been the same commander again without that drive. On the inside, he’d just be a regular guy holding on to nothing but guilt, and guilt is a horrible and painful thing to be drunk on. As people often say, sometimes you’re happier chasing your dream than living a life where you no longer have one. You’ll continue to find this to be a heavily emphasized, central theme in this show.
*also voice acting this episode went crazzyyyy. Eren lying face down and clutching onto Levi’s ankle, while talking about his and Armins’ childhood dream had me in waterworks.
Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

I would like to add the moment when Hange announced to Levi and Erwin that there was no breach in Wall Rose and that the Titans they fought in Season 2 where likely the citizens of Ragako village. As a soldier Levi was motivated by his hate for Titans (as well as his trust and devotion to Erwin) so he was distraught to find out that his hate and killing sprees had been directed to tormented human souls. All this time he'd thought Titans were another species entirely. A very normal reaction to very unsettling news. Erwin on the other hand was delighted because now he had some clues to speculate on the answer of the question that haunted him his whole life; are there people on the other side of the Walls?

I trust Levi's decision in this. The fact that Erwin entrusted him the syringe is enough. I mean, Levi no doubt has the highest survival rate, but we can't disregard the idea that maybe Eren or Mikasa or Hange might have just a bit lower than Levi's, but still Erwin chose to entrust it to him, which means he also trust Levi's judgement skills. Also, he just don't want Erwin to suffer the guilt anymore; it'll just add the death count on Erwin's sleeves if Levi chose to revive him.
And considering how Isayama's storytelling goes, parts of what Eren said (specifically after recounting all the things Armin has done) was actually a foreshadowing, and if you'll just understand and realize it, you can actually consider it as a spoiler😅😂
And Dre, saying "f*ck you" to Bertholdt while getting eaten, just gets me excited to see your reactions in the final season😅😂

also there is only one Coordinate and thats Eren. zeke (as you'll come to learn) has his reasons for why he can do the things he can do. also to put your mind into another blunder, annie also could command titans to an extent ( her cry for help when she got trapped by erwin in the forrest) and we kno for a fact she aint no Coordinate lol. ALSO, a little easter egg, the word Coordinate is always capitalized. coincidence? who else always has his name Capitalized? hint: wont He do it? yes He will lol. then again it could be just a hierarchy thing.

Is it possible to divide one spinal fluid injection into two? I was thinking. And if Reiner hadn't been kidnapped and stayed in the same place, if Armin and Erwin had been attacked with spinal fluid, and Bertolt and Reiner had been preyed upon by each of them... Levi wouldn't have had to make such a difficult choice. And I am very saddened by the death of Moblit, who was always with Hange. As an aside, I'm using the translation function, so I'm sorry if it's a strange English.

Technically, probably yes. That's how Ymir's Titan was passed down to her three children, then to 9, before they were passed down 1:1. It's likely that if Erwin and Armin both had half the syringe and they cut Bert's spine in half, they both could have had part of the Colossal Titan's power. But at this point, they don't know that exactly, and they know that taking the injection wrongly can go VERY badly as happened with Rod Reiss, so...

    • @tanisiagreer9926
      @tanisiagreer9926 Год назад +6

Keep in mind that (at time of filming), Shruti and Dre have all the knowledge the “audience” does at this point. It’s easy to judge reactions when you have all the knowledge of later episodes, but even at this point there’s no specific hint as to what’s ahead. It’s been three seasons of the characters losing loved ones for no reason, fighting for survival, getting betrayed by Reiner and Bertholt, and just barely surviving an extinction-level battle with the Beast Titan. When I first watched this episode, I was all “F Bertholt” too. Because he was (one of) the bad guys. He murdered his former comrades, almost roasted Hange, and deliberately roasted Armin.
F BERTHOLT! Have a nice next life somewhere out there.
You can like or not like a content creator’s reaction, but it doesn’t mean that they didn’t “get” the episode. Their reactions are exactly what I expected at this point in the story. There will be more time for them to catch on to what’s next as they continue the series.
