  • Patrick O'Malley.
A man who survived being down a well for three days, only to rise and plan an elaborate wedding. Soon after, he was concussed and marooned during his own honeymoon, but never held it against anyone. He then crossed the world on a motorcycle to save his daughter's life and reached enlightenment in the process. All the while, he never stopped honing his skills in horticulture, mechanics, and being Emily's voice of self-care when she gets too wrapped up in her endeavors. She could also trust him to care for their child and hold down the house and home restaurant while she worked at other places.
Well. In this game, he has been reduced to a man-child who has forgotten how to clean. He sleeps too much and is so oblivious to Emily's fatigue that he volunteers her to cook for spontaneous guests without asking her first. All so we can have this forced, manufactured story about a Father of the Year competition.
The gameplay is still fun, don't get me wrong. But Patrick is one of my favorite characters: It was always refreshing to see a positive masculine figure really rise to the challenge of being a true partner and good father. So to see him bastardized like this, just for a single plotline, is very jarring and -- dare I say -- triggering.
I think it would make more sense if Chad, Sharon's husband, whom we've never met, was the ne'er-do-well partner who only did surface-level parenting. If Patrick was in on the plan for the Father of the Year competition to help get revenge for Chad's condescending ways, then the plotline would actually fit in with his character.
I've also never seen Emily tolerate so much lazy nonsense. She glares a lot, but never says anything, and I don't remember her being that passive. Especially with Patrick. So this plotline doesn't hold up in that regard either.
Whoo, that was a lot of thoughts! Let me know what you think: Does this attitude change seem in line with Patrick, or does he seem like a whole new person?
