I agree and find it difficult to say Something Wild is a better movie then The Mission. Something Wild isn't bad but its not great - its fun but not mind blowing. The Mission is, as you say, a masterpiece. I think they raise some good points about it, but they gloss over the fact that those are actual indigenous people (not Guarani but Colombian, I think). All of the good elements of the The Mission (acting, soundtrack, visuals, historical basis [though not completely accurate]) far outweigh any of the "bad" script/scenes. To put it another way: I would challenge anyone to watch The Mission and not be touched by it in some way - it is emotional, inspiring, and tragic all at once.
Something Wild Is a classic gem with a really good memorable and eclectic soundtrack that matches the wild adventuresness of the movie as well as Melanie Griffith's gypsy-like carefree persona. It had an unexpected profound Impact on me when I saw It during a wild time In my own life , and It teaches a really Important message about life Itself. The last scene when they reunite the same way they met and Audrey has a different car and asks Charlie does he wanna go for a ride without telling him where , only this time he wastes no time saying "sure audrey why not" says It all. It's better to be a live dog than a dead lion.
Something Wild (like After Hours) was a breath of fresh air during the time of stupid comedies / Chevy Chase & Richard Pryor movies in the mid 1980s . Really loved this !!
I’ve never viewed “Sky Bandits,” but I was curious to see where the actresses with the, according to Siskel and Ebert, bad French accents were really from. It turns out that their names are Valérie Steffen and Ingrid Held and both women were born in Paris, LOL.
I once seen Something Wild & it is interesting offbeat comedy suspense with great performances by 3 people 👍🌟🌟🌟. I also really like Hoosiers, a very good feature 👍🌟🌟🌟
@@lerm2866 "After Hours" though it was at the same time was far weaker than Something Wild where there was a focus to what was going on and the tension of seeing this pay off.
It is funny they act like Hickory winning the championship wasn't really believable yet it is based on Milan in 1954 whose team was that small and did win the state title.
i dont know what Johnathan Demme was like as a person but he put a lot of good not mainstream music in his films. and in "Something Wild" he has Su Tissue do a cameo and that alone impresses me. but he has also made a lot of good films including "Something Wild", it also amazes me knowing what Melanie Griffith is like that she pulls off this character so well. sort of what they call a manic pixie dream girl these days but predating that. i dont know if i would say The Mission" is good or bad but there is something i have always liked about it as well as the film "Black Robe" in that visually they do such a nice job showing these people and place at that time period and i find them interesting just for that.
I thought The Mission was amazing to watch and the cinematography was beautiful as well. The locations it was shot on was a main character to me. In the years after Midnight Run in 1988 with a few exceptions outside of Scorsese movies DeNiro would make some really bad movies as well as going against his earlier penchant that saw him make just 2 movies a year to about 10. I miss performances like this.
Roger Ebert was right; Siskel's statement that a high school basketball team he knew would "blow Gene Hackman's team out of the water" was irrelevant and stupid; but still not as stupid as his later comment about the "bad French accents of the girls in "Sky Bandits". Those were actually French actresses in those parts, and Roger Ebert should have told Siskel what an idiot he was.
Something Wild - a quirky film featuring a powerful Ray Liotta in an intriguing role. ***/**** The Mission - a laboured script with conflicted characterisation and predictable plot by Robert Bolt coupled with heavy-handed direction by Roland Joffe conspired to topple this film. Only Ennio Morricone's suspenseful score that foregrounded the plot made this 1986 Palme d'Or winner memorable. */**** Hoosiers - Forced dynamics between the lead characters (with predictable traits) is my only complaint in this energetic fact-based movie which I saw last month in Blu-ray. ***/****
Newcomer Ray Liotta. RIP, Ray. Thank you!
The Mission is an absolute masterpiece including a great score by the master: Ennio Morricone

Well stated!
@@oobrocks thanks!
Totally disagree with them about The Mission, this was such an under rated movie. The Mission is a masterpiece.

going by this and some of his other films he clearly had a very cool musical taste and knowledge.
proto-Manic Pixie Dream Girl

Wonderful shift in tone a yuppie nightmare/fantasy MG’s best work by a mile makes a fine double feature with After Hours

Something wild is a movie I will always stop to watch when I see it pump up on TV I love it so much I must have seen it 20 times
Loved The Mission

hoosiers is on my top 10 all time list. i saw it in theatre and the opening sequence hooked me. the look of that movie is the look of my life.
one of Siskel`s worst reviews of all time considering he later liked "Eddie" which was a horrible basketball movie
just wanted to hear somthing wild rip ray liotta, and i totally agree with siskel and ebert. I had fun with it.
“Newcomer, Ray Liotta”
Sure were a lot of films that year.
What does that even mean?
Is there a pre Pandemic year that was light on movies?
@Seagal Steven Well Platoon was the best film of 1986. I never saw it. Heard it was really good.
Do you have Siskel and Ebert from 1985 with Once Bitten or Transylvania 6-5000?
Nope, sorry
That was a harsh review on the Mission...
Disagree with them on the Mission because of its glorious score and cinematography than outshines everything else in the film.

damn why so many spoilers in the Something Wild review?
Spoiler alert!
