Oh my gosh, I literally teared up when you were sharing your new path. You will be a blessing for those you help in the future. ❣️ And I loved learning that you had been to law school, as I was also in law school before I had children. I never finished, however, as I was working full time and attending law school at night, and during that time suffered two miscarriages, so when I became pregnant the third time and it looked as though another miscarriage was imminent, I quit work and quit school and was on bedrest for a few months. My oldest daughter was born in late 1979, and since I had always wanted to be a mom more than anything, I could not bring myself to leave her to go back to school after she was born. For some reason, I never had a problem carrying a pregnancy again, and went on to have three more daughters and then a son at the age of 42! When you talked about "needy eyes" I could definitely relate! LOL There were a lot of needy eyes for many years, as my oldest was turning 16 when my son was born. I spent a LOT of years immersed in intensive mommyhood. 😜 I remember when my son was born, thinking that when he graduated from high school, I would be turning 60, and it seemed very far in the distance, but that is eleven years behind me at this point, and the time absolutely flew by! My children have all told me how much it meant to them that I was home with them as they were growing up, and I am extremely grateful that I was able to do so. Like you, I would do it all again exactly the same. And now I am a widow, with five adult children, seven wonderful grandchildren, and my life is knitting. It is fabulous! ❣️ Hope you are having a wonderful time skiing!
From a social worker of more than 20 years, it's never too late to join the field! I'll be rooting for you and feel free to reach out if you'd ever like to chat more about it. I'm so excited for you and this next chapter!
Congratulations Lena! I know you will be a blessing to the social work field. I was a registered nurse and went back to school as an adult. I got my masters degree in clinical counseling at the age of 50. Go girl, sparkle on!
Oh that blanket your mother-in-law made is beautiful. I crochet several different size blankets for my grand babies. But I made each a blanket that’s a lot bigger so they can use it for quite a few years. I hope they will enjoy them. My oldest one he’s 4 1/2 and loves all crochet and knitted things. He gets so excited and watches me a lot.
Leena, thank you for expressing your challenges on knitting hats. For some reason I can knit sweaters to fit no problem, but when it comes to a simple hat, I just never hit the sizing right🤔 All my knitting of hats is on a timeout now😂😂 Also, congrats on pursuing your education towards something that fits you better and brings you joy. I was a stay at home mother who always put my 3 kids first, volunteering for everything and supporting their sports and outside activities. When they were older I did work full time. When my 3rd child graduated, I said to him, wow, what am I going to do now? He shockingly said to me… mom, you’re going to have to get some friends to hang out with!!! It was funny when he said it, but actually it made me realize that little by little I had neglected to foster friendships and time for myself. So good for you for doing that now and setting yourself up better for when your children get older.
A lawyer and a mom - the absolute perfect pre-requisites for an amazing social worker. I'm beyond excited for you - and for all the future people who will cross your path. Now, I want to share something exciting that you can probably relate to. My daughter is 20, a junior at Berkeley and one year away from graduating and possibly doing graduate work in the UK in 2026. She is in the most wonderful relationship with Shloka, a beautiful young woman from India who was raised in Singapore. For Christmas, Christine's dad and I are paying for her to go to Singapore to meet Shloka's family. But -that's only part of my excitement. I taught Christine how to knit and crochet when she was your daughter's age. I have pictures of her knitting a scarf on the sidelines of soccer practices and games - with dirty cleats and crazy hair falling out of her pony tail while in full concentration of her two large knitting needles and blue scarf. But she lost interest. I tried so hard to get her interested again but only managed a day or two of small crochet projects that she set aside after an hour or so. Well.... Shloka is crafty so during Thanksgiving break, we knit together. Christine has been bitten by the knitting bug and is working on a garter and eyelet throw blanket using fingering weight yarn. Shloka says Christine drags her knitting everywhere she goes and pulls it out as soon as she has 10 free minutes. And - it even gets better! I am leaving here in about 30 minutes to go pick her up - we are flying to my mom's in Texas for Christmas. My mom just had her 90th birthday and even my son is flying in from Vietnam and my niece from the Virgin Islands to spend the holidays with us at my mom's house in San Antonio. My daughter wants me to help her knit her first cardigan!!!! So, she picked the Montrose Cardigan and later today we are shopping at a wonderful yarn store in Berkeley to pick out her yarn and a project bag. My heart is SINGING. Christmas with most of my family, and working on my daughter's first ever cardigan = Best holiday ever! At the end of December she will be off to Singapore, and hopefully knitting away on the long flights ;-)
Congrats on your major new direction! 🎉 That's so exciting! One of my dearest friends just retired as a hospice social worker. She busted her *ss! Really tough work! Be sure you Protect Your Peace. This community will continue to love & respect you. Take care of yourself. Just pop on when you can - we aren't going anywhere! ❤
Happy Holidays! And congratulations on starting this new journey back to school & social work, it's really brave (and inspiring, too). I also have to say that I think someone like you working in that field is EXACTLY what this world needs.
What a way for you to give of your kind, caring heart - you will be a blessing to so many! ….I HAVE to know what happened with your Ranunculus! Last episode it didn’t sound good. I’ve made a bunch and can’t wait to use some linen quill for one because of your enthusiasm for the yarn. Now I’m all over the Polkadot Cardi! I printed the pages for my size and can’t wait to start! Your yarn is gorgeous. Enjoy your family time and holidays thank you for being here! 😘
Oh Lena!! I'm a social worker... I can't imagine being anything else. I'm thrilled for you and welcome to this wonderful profession. Best wishes for your studies.
I'm so excited for you! This is very good timing. When I was 43 (20yrs ago😮), I started a little business out of my home doing something that I love. Once I was in my 50s, and the kids were grown, it really helped having something that I was passionate about and was for me, get me through any "empty nest" feelings. I say, your 50s is a time to embrace and enjoy the new chapter. I have to knit a hat for myself. I just bought a new winter jacket that doesn't have a hood. Problem...I have a giant head...most patterns aren't big enough. Perhaps I'll try a cabled hat and hope that it will have some "give" to it 🤔 Merry Christmas....and thank you for a bright spot on my Fridays ❤
Congratulations on your new venture! From your podcasts, your caring comes through making social work a great avenue for you. I am glad you will stay with us on your channel as I have been greatly inspired in my own makes from yours. Have a wonderful holiday ❤
Congratulations Leena! I was the same age as you when I went after my Masters in social work! I spent 25 years in the field and never regretted it! I've been retired for years now but I often miss that part if my life! Best of luck to you and happy holidays!❤
Oh wow - congratulations on your decision to return to studying! Can't wait to hear your stories on that journey!! Have a lovely holiday and I look forward to hearing you again in the new year xx
I’m so glad you get to go on your trip. My son is coming home tomorrow night (today is his birthday). He has missed the last 3 Christmas because of deployment’s. We’re super excited. I quit my job 3 years to be the live in nanny for my grand babies. It’s definitely a change. It’s a blessing but honestly at times I definitely miss my alone time. I was alone for quite a few years and now it’s a few hours late at night. Sometimes it isn’t enough. I’m so happy for you to go back to school. Congratulations!
Congrats on school and good luck! I work with some amazing social workers in my job as a nurse practitioner and they have taught me so much about setting good boundaries too ❤❤❤
I feel lucky that as I live in the city my boys did not have to ‘go away’ to college, loved having them at home. Of course they are grown up now, but still miss the buzz in the house. Delighted Leena that you will be now be taking up the study of an area you have always felt passionate about - that’s half the battle of being a mature student - you’re there because you want to be. I went back again part time aged 39 when the boys were in secondary school - loved being a student again - with added bonus that college had slightly longer holiday times than their secondary school! Have the most wonderful week skiing with the family, and catching up on your knitting.
Wow! Exciting news. Best wishes for your next chapter. I went to grad school when my kids were in middle and high school and it was do-able but a lot! I think my kids benefitted from seeing me work hard and do well in school. At least that’s what I tell myself!
Your podcast is just so sweet, I know you will bring that same energy to your new endeavor! Also that pink hat is amazing! Have a lovely week with your family
I am excited for you!!! As soon as you started taking about a shift in carrer. I was hoping it would be something helping others. My son is autistic, and social workers are the best humans. They all have a heart of gold and all have such a passion. I hope you have the best christmas, with lots of snow and joy!!!
Oh, I can so relate to experiencing a nasty neighbor. It's a shock to one's system. It makes me feel as if I have an enemy living next door. My neighbors from my previous home were angry with me when I would not give them two feet of our property which they had been using before they decided to build a new fence. The new fence was to be built on a property line where our properties joined. Next they requested that we pay half of the new fence since it was a fence between our two properties which we agreed to providing both of us agree on style and materials and contractors. They presented us with their fence choice, material and contractor saying the build was going to be started in two days and they wanted a certain amount of money the amount being at that time enough to pay for the whole job. Another time they requested to drill into our roof in order to anchor their shade cloth. Finally, they had hired people to trim their trees throwing trimmings onto our property and pets. Finally the husband yelled at me (in a nutshell) because I was the person who told them no on all of these circumstances and he was angry that he was one being told no but mostly because he was being told no by a female... Love your podcast. What type of work are you interested in as a social worker?
I’m so so excited for you! Yes! There’s always a next chapter, isn’t there? I’m in a similar stage now - after retiring early….figuring out what’s next. Your talking about allowing time to figure it out inspired me! It will be challenging, but oh I certainly know you’re going to give it a go! You’ve got this!! Happiest of holidays to you and your family!
Super exciting to go back to social work! My daughter was a social work major and if I had known about that major in college I probably would’ve been one too. (I was a middle school math teacher) That daughter also went to law school and she told me that most judges that work with kids/families are basically social workers, they just don’t realize it! So you never know - this could use all your education!!! Love that green color! Gonna have to check that out! Merry Christmas and enjoy your family!❤
Congratulations on your new endeavor in this new phase of your life! You've got a great personality for the career!! Happy Holidays - enjoy your time away!
I'm so happy for you! That is so special, to find your renewed passion for something will feel so magical! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happiest New Year! 🎄🌟🎅🎁
so happy for you and all the coming changes. You will do great. You are a very thoughtful person and tuned into the needs of those around you. Have a great holiday with your family!
Excited for you that you have found your new path and hope it gives you great satisfaction and fulfillment. I hope you do manage to continue with this podcast, it is one of my favorites. As time goes by I find that I enjoy more those podcasts which explore more the philosopy, if you will, of knitting and life rather than are an endless catalougue of masses of FOs.

Of course we all fantasize about staying home and knitting all day😊 but your plans sound exciting and I wish you a wonderful beginning to 2025 and to this new chapter in your life. Definitely helpful to have a goal and purpose as one’s kids head toward teenagerhood and university, and also good for them to know that you won’t fall apart when they are gone. Happy new year and happy knitting! And, as usual, thank you for a great podcast🎉
Wishing you and your family a happy and restful Christmas and New Year. So excited to hear all about your new journey into Social Work, you have such a good heart and I know you will be amazing ❤
Best of luck on your new endeavor! (Not that you need 😉) also want to let you know you are not alone…I went back to a school in 2019 to be an ESE teacher bc I felt called to do so…. I keep trying to bail tho and convince myself it wont work out but every time I take a semester off (especially when I had a 3rd baby since then 😂) I feel “someone” trying to tell me “something” and to keep going! You’ll do amazing things ❤
Wow! Congratulations! I'll hold my issues until you're done! Thank you for all of your awesome podcasts, they bring me such joy and inspiration both for knitting but also life! Hugs from Texas!! Merry Christmas and Happiest of New years!!
Hi Leena: Happy Holidays! I am so excited for your new adventure. I am a Social Worker. I got my Masters many moons ago. I am semi retired and still love what I do. I know my clients thank me for helping them in their life journey, but I am so appreciative of them. I learn so much from them and cherish our client/therapist relationship. Whooohoo Leena 🤩 you’re a very smart woman. Congratulations 🎉 you’re making very smart decisions and thinking ahead🥰 I have about 10 years on you and how I wished I would’ve gone back to school. It’s OK though because I became a grandma at 41😂 they keep me busy, but it would be so fun to have a career again
Oh wow I’m so impressed by your new work direction! I’m sooo looking forward to you telling us how it’s going and what you are learning and hopefully your new job in a year. Btw… I do not think you are going to like this new cardi. I’m not saying it’s not pretty but I think it kinda looks a little too “hand made” and I cannot imagine it’s your style. I’m hoping to be wrong though so I’m very interested in seeing it develop
Would you have enough of the coconut on the hood to micro stripe the edge with the mint green. I think the micro stripes would tie it together and look gorgeous. Maybe more intentional. It will look beautiful either way but just another option. Diane from Boston

You will be so good as a social worker and how lucky your clients will be, you were meant to do this!
I love it so much for you that you're going back to school! I love learning too and have been considering going back for a Master's too. My kids are around the same age as yours and gaining independence with some speed ha! Good for you for making the leap!
Such exciting news! Having a job where you help people is such a fulfilling gift to yourself.
Wow, this is exciting news indeed, going back to school to be a social worker! Good for you, I am cheering for you
Congratulations! You got this!
I’m excited for you! I know you’ll do great at anything you want to do. 😊

It has been a wonderful career for me. I hope you experience the same!
Congratulations on going back to school! You will make a wonderful social worker!
So glad for another episode 🙏❤️
wow! What a drop! bravo to you, Have a great new adventure!
Social work seems perfect for you! It’s what you already think about anyway! I’m in the field and I love what I do!
Yayyyy i am sooo happy for your future plans and i wish you the best of luck ❤
Have a very Merry Christmas!😀🎄🎁
Oh wow I’m so impressed by your new work direction! I’m sooo looking forward to you telling us how it’s going and what you are learning and hopefully your new job in a year.
Btw… I do not think you are going to like this new cardi. I’m not saying it’s not pretty but I think it kinda looks a little too “hand made” and I cannot imagine it’s your style. I’m hoping to be wrong though so I’m very interested in seeing it develop
Good luck in your new life chapter!
You’re right I need both ways English and continental and my English is definitely tighter and more neat always
Hi...it's important to take time for you... the time goes quickly, and you have to keep up. Congratulations on your new decision.
Would you have enough of the coconut on the hood to micro stripe the edge with the mint green. I think the micro stripes would tie it together and look gorgeous. Maybe more intentional. It will look beautiful either way but just another option. Diane from Boston
Love that pink hat on you
Good for you!!
You look beautiful in that pink hat. I have to make one. Love your podcast.
