Yes i remember those very agressive downshifts. Most cars lean on the brakes in the beginning of the braking zone and let the revs drop before downshifting unlike this car which seemed to downshift at the top of the rev range. Never understood why.
@@fattestwhiteguyever757 it's actually because the car has a much higher rev limit than the drivers actually use because of the restrictors, power drops too much. So 7.5k for upshifting, but downshift blips usually go 8k+

Still remember glued to the screen watching a 458 GT3 (not the GTE) win the '14 Bathurst 12Hr, for the last 2 hour it and a AMG GT3 would swap positions every lap, the 458 faster across the mountain, the AMG better down the straight... Still one of the best battles I have watch.. Beautiful car
I miss this era of GTE/GT2 not because it was better than recent GTE, but because I miss my Flying Lizard Porsches, M3 art car and Larbre's Corvette art car, ESM's Patrón 458s, and Falken's Porsche. Fortunately for me AF Corse and Corvette Racing have always been in the mix.
He makes a good point here. My lottery garage wouldn't have a single track-only hyperwhatever in it. I would pick a choice few historic racing cars (a '60s one, a '90s one, a 21st-century one, a Stratos Gr.4 and a wildcard...) for my track fun instead. It's miles cooler to rock up at Silverstone Classic or Goodwood than it is to have the largest peacock feathers at some vainglorious VIP trackday for the 'gram.
Totally agree, which is why the first car in my lottery garage would be a Lotus Cortina Mk 1. In addition I'll have the MX5 as the MX5 Cup is fabulous racing. a Lancia 037 to compete against your Stratos, a Ferrari 330 P4 to make everyone else go weak and dribbly, and a Datsun 240Z simply because it's my favourite car ever.
I come back to this religiously. More people really need to know about this episode. All of the work you guys do but this episode in specific. Just wow.
I will never forget the sounds these produced. Lucky enough to see these at Petit Lemans with the chrome Patron livery. Banging down the gears into the chicane and back up the hill, louder than any other car around them. Glorious
The sound of the turbos today are limited by the rules too, not just the turbos! If you hear a 488 GTE without the the mufflers you will see how much turbo cars also have wonderful sound
What I love in the sound of the 458 GTE is that it doesn’t sound perfectly smooth but rather sounds a bit raw and a bit crossplane like if that makes sense.
@@ahemgee9542 what I meant by that is that it doesn’t sound totally smooth like a 4 cylinder but still has this typical v8 growl which is exacerbated in a crossplane v8.
Awesome car, lovely video and review (as always!)…but my favorite best sounding Ferrari V8 video is still the gnarly F40 LM driven by Jacques Laffite!😍
@jameswheeler5025 Not just that! It's the imperfect fueling, the rawness of everything that makes it. The 458 is a great car, very refined! The F40 is just brutal, built for only one purpose: put your foot hard on the gas, anything else and it's not happy...
Sequential transmissions shift even faster than dcts. I was always fascinated by them, so figured the cheapest way to experience it is by getting a motorbike. It's satisfying nailing perfect clutchless upshifts faster than a lambos dct transmission, in my small 125cc bike haha
Cars must be heard in person, “ at revs” to understand…their true sounds. Have you heard one in person? Not even close to a four cylinder. I’ve been to many racing and vintage events in my 58 years… The dynamic range of the sound is not captured from mics..
As a guy who loves cars and motorcycles that Ferrari sounds similar to a Yamaha R6. They both just sing to the redline and have this glorious downshifts.
I just wish that production cars with 4 wheel drive were allowed to race in that formal. Look at what manufacturers are making and then work from there for a racer series.
Dumb question (probably), but can this beat a C8 Corvette setup for road racing? I have doubts, but the 'vette sounds incredible, and is a beast in every way. (nope, I am not a 'Vette fanboy, until a few years ago, anyway)
Fellow Finn Toni Vilander's ex racecar. It does not seem to sound so special as it could, maybe your microphone placement or quality let us down from real experience. I really love all about 458 but 360 with straight through tubi style just sounds better. All variants of the FXX- sound even crazier. The Ferrari V8 is very very good but it is only beaten by italian V12's.
Does it really sound that good? Audio is mostly the usual flat-plane V8 noise, just a bit sharper, surely? And plane V8s do sound a lot like four bangers. Not a patch on an equivalent V10 or V12, no? What are people hearing that I'm not? Not saying it sounds crap, but honestly, as multi-cylinder naturally aspirated race cars go, not sure the sound from this thing is even average let above average?
I will *NEVER* forget listening to these 458 GTE's downshift through every gear down the first braking zone at Le Mans.

the 458 marked the start of a golden era for Ferrari.
The best Ferrari is the one that has yet to be built.
The 458 GTEs were the loudest cars on the track at the time. No matter the series, you would know when they were running.
Its successors the 488 and the 296 are the most silent cars on the track now.
How Ferrari has fallen!
And the old C6.R GT1 cars...those were LEGENDARY. You could hear them no matter where they were on track.
This are my kind of car videos , where you almost feel the connection with cars ... i dont know how to explain
