  • Hey y'all. Thanks for hanging with me today! Today's episode is a bit different. I have several things to unbox so I figured I'd do a little haul of some yarn, some crochet hooks, and some other goodies that I've ordered. Then you can watch me struggle to figure out how to use a yarn swift, and we'll round things out with my first attempt at crochet tapestry!

Thank you for doing what you are doing and going to school to continue your education and go further in your field. It is in no way an easy path and really Nick I admire you for your dedication and commitment all while working your regular job (and finding time here and there to crochet) I can not even imagine the hard path you are on. The exhaustion, long commute, studying,, exams etc. In a field where more people like you and Andrew are so desperately needed and not many willing to make the sacrifices or have the dedication. Or can't due to money and life in general. (I believe if going into the medical field tuition should be FREE) I am sure you will downplay the amazing things you are doing. DONT! You are one of the many unsung heroes and I applaud you. I am the sister of a nurse and saw firsthand what it takes. Stay safe and hydrated! I love it when you show all your projects and new stuff you ordered. The PRIDE tapestry is beautiful!.

Did the same thing you did. I bought one streamline metal Furl. I couldn’t help buying more in my favorite sizes. The company advises to keep the hooks in their boxes so I do. Juan folds up the yarn label and puts it in the middle of the cake. Thanks to you I bought that row counter and I absolutely love it!

    Hey Nick how goes it?
I’ve enjoyed your videos as I like to see how other crafty friends do things or have helpful hints or hacks for our crafts.
I mainly crochet but do dabble in other crafts so I “watch/listen” to many different people .
If it’s helpful I seen when winding up yarn, to take the label and roll it up and slide into the hole before taking it off the winder. And then it’s stored inside your cake until your ready for it and you’ll still know what your using.
I loved the tapestry too it’s on my list of makes as well!!
    Happy crafting

That’s the exact swift/winder I also use and I also got it from Amazon. The swift umbrella is a little finicky, but I’ve used it to wind over 20 hanks since Dec and haven’t had any issues. Cheap, but works. Congratulations on winding your first cake!

Big Hugs 🤗 I love Furls. I just made a vest and am finishing a pair of bell bottoms with that anti-pilling yarn. I've also made bags, amigurumi etc... with it. We celebrate the 🌈 all year. Nice swift and winder. Since I dye yarn I often hank up balled your 😅

Yarn is generally hand dyed in hanks so that you can get the dye all over the yarn - much more difficult if the yarn is in a ball or cake.

Have you used the metal streamline?? I haven’t tried their acrylic hooks, but I have to say just spending a couple hours doing that tapestry, my hands and wrists were sore from the big metal streamline. I’ve literally never experienced that before!

I love my furls and really have no issues even with the metal streamline. I think it depends what kind of hook holder you are. I’m a knife/flute holder and furls are best for me and my wrists. If you are a pencil holder the metal streamline may not be optimal.

Have you ever considered using a wooden yarn spindle to hold your yarn cakes while you work? A spindle allows you to pull yarn from the outside of the cake so your don’t have to deal with the issue of collapsing yarn cakes as you work or hollowed out leftover yarn cakes if you don’t use an entire cake for your project.

Wooden crochet hooks are great when working with bamboo yarn.
@Thryssinstitches has a great tutorial for using a yarn swift, and gives a lesson on putting yarn into hanks.
The center pull skeins the US is so used to require machines that only the bigger yarn manufacturers can afford. Also hand dyed yarns are dyed while in hank form at the length they are purchased in, which means caking up is an extra step.

Enjoyed your video today. Thank you. Here’s another tip from Juan: fold up the labels from your yarn and stick them in the centers of cakes as you slip them off your winder.

Happy Pride! $25 a hook is more money than I want to spend on a crochet hook. I don't use the "easy to grip" hooks as I find I am more consistent in my stitches using an old style straight hook. Thanks for the info on doing the graphic work. I will definitely give that a spin.

people usually sell yarn in hanks because they don't have access to the expensive machinery to make it into skeins, and keeping (especially yarn made with natural fibers) in a cake puts more tension on the yarn, so it shouldn't be stored that way long-term.

Curious if you have ever tried crocheting while holding the hook the other way? Not like a pencil. I m 61 and never got comfortable doing the pencil hold although it is apparently the “correct” way! Oh well. I ll keep doing it “the wrong way”!🥴. Love the videos. Have a good pride month.
