I'm so glad you've made it over to Jacob Collier. He is widely acknowledged as a musical genius. His tiny desk concerts for NPR were/are very enjoyable but if ever there were a tip of the iceberg moment this is it. Jacob has done so much more. He is especially known for his complex vocal harmonies (Moon River, In the Bleak Midwinter, Flintstones, The Christmas Song). He has lectured and taught music theory at major educational institutions around the world-he is currently 27. As a bad director you really must react to his version of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long". He sings, plays many instruments, arranged and produced the orchestra and did the amazing video entirely himself. There are Choirs, Take 6, Quincy Jones and Steve Vai have spot appearances holding up key changes. He won a Grammy for this one-he does currently have five. As a musician you owe it to yourself to view and react to what is an astonishing act of un-compromising, wild creativity and an out pouring of such joyous music it cannot fail to put a smile in your heart and on your face. To reiterate Jacob did all the arranging, video production, plays and sings -there is a jaw dropping piano solo in the final third of the piece. Please react to this, I so look forward to sharing your wonderment.

Yes, Yes, Yes! And still - just the tip of the iceberg😄😉👍🏼. Where to begin and where to end? And he is so generous in his sharings of processes, too - just unique🌈💝💫🌟💚🤗.

Jacob has won five Grammy Awards, all in the "Best Arrangement" categories. Two in 2017, two in 2020 and one in 2021. Also in 2021 he was nominated but did not win for Album of the Year and Best R&B Performance. In 2022 he has been nominated for two more for Best R&B Song and Best Arrangement for Instrumental and Vocals with the results coming in April.
If you're interested in checking out his Grammy winning arrangements/performances they are for The Flintstones, Your And I, All Night Long, Moon River and He Won't Hold You. They're all AMAZING.

Hi Bob. I'm 60, and I consider Jacob to be the one true musical genius born in my lifetime. To give you a bit of food for thought. Things Collier does unlike any musician in history:
    1. He understands tonality in ways unlike anyone ever before. In fact, he understands the EMOTIONS of tonality unlike anyone ever before. So he uses semitones unlike anyone ever before. He moves harmonic expression unlike anyone.
    2. He creates musical soundscapes that defy description- as they should.
    3. His time signatures, his bending of them, of expanding and contracting them to fit expression, is also unlike anyone else before.
    4. His facility with instruments comes from these deep bases, and then applying them.
    5. His computer literacy with his musical constructions make him uniquely the first genius to have access to their possibilities.
He is the hero of many new young musicians as well he should be.
You must check out the panoply of Collier's work and collaborations. Go to a Collier overload, "Moon River". Then try, as recommended below, "Fix You".

    Jacob is, obviously, a MONSTER!
If you're interested, last year he performed various versions of this same song on different television programs, and they're all different and fun to compare:
On Jimmy Kimmel, from his bathroom: ruclips.net/video/QAwkGI-_adI/видео.html
    On Jimmy Fallon: ruclips.net/video/eBmJZiF3YAo/видео.html
On Later with Jools Holland: ruclips.net/video/dYEHvdNkKes/видео.html
And, believe me, that is just the tippy top of the iceberg when it comes to Jacob Collier!

If you're interested in this phenomena of singing with oneself, you should check out Geoff Castellucci. He's a (mostly) a capella singer. 5 octaves, from deep bass up. He's one of the founding members of the a capella group, VoicePlay. On his own channel, he often accompanies himself on keyboard. Shenandoah, his latest release, is quietly spectacular. Pure butter on the bottom notes, and silk on top. He not only sings "with himself" in the same room, he reacts to himself more and more. It's very strange and oddly convincing. Reactors sometimes find themselves knowing it's all Geoff, but still forgetting. He does the whole production: all of the arrangements of course, but also the vocal and video editing.

I believe he occasionally gets help with the video production/editing (e.g. Moon River), but I think he often does it himself as well. The rest of it (writing, arranging, performance, recording, etc)... that's all him. If you want to completely lose your mind sometime, check out the 90-minute video where he just goes through the Logic Pro session for his Grammy-winning version of Moon River. Oh, but if you haven't seen it, FIRST DEFINITELY WATCH MOON RIVER. It'd be cool to see your reaction to it, but I honestly suggest that you just watch it for your own enjoyment. Doing the reaction and starting/stopping will ruin the experience for you.
BTW, I'm a bass player, too, and I'm always amazed and mildly irritated by Jacob's prowess on bass, which is like is 10th instrument or something. 🤣
