He actually has 5 Grammys now. And he definitely does everything himself, including arrangement etc. Jacob Collier is a rabbit hole you for sure is going to want to take a dive into.
Jacob Collier's Grammys: Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals in 2017 for "The Flintstones", 2020 for "All Night Long" & 2021 for "He Won't Hold You""; Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella in 2017 for "You and I" & 2020 for "Moon River" (That one will blow your circuit breakers, Bob!). He was also nominated in 2021 for Album of the Year for "Djesse Vol. 3" & Best R&B Performance for "All I Need" (featuring Ty Dolla Sign & Mahalia). For 2022, he has nominations for Best R&B Song for "Good Days" (with SZA, Carlos Núñez Muñoz, Carter Lang, and Christopher Ruelas) & Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals for "The Christmas Song" (yep, Mel Torme's classic).
I'm so glad you've made it over to Jacob Collier. He is widely acknowledged as a musical genius. His tiny desk concerts for NPR were/are very enjoyable but if ever there were a tip of the iceberg moment this is it. Jacob has done so much more. He is especially known for his complex vocal harmonies (Moon River, In the Bleak Midwinter, Flintstones, The Christmas Song). He has lectured and taught music theory at major educational institutions around the world-he is currently 27. As a bad director you really must react to his version of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long". He sings, plays many instruments, arranged and produced the orchestra and did the amazing video entirely himself. There are Choirs, Take 6, Quincy Jones and Steve Vai have spot appearances holding up key changes. He won a Grammy for this one-he does currently have five. As a musician you owe it to yourself to view and react to what is an astonishing act of un-compromising, wild creativity and an out pouring of such joyous music it cannot fail to put a smile in your heart and on your face. To reiterate Jacob did all the arranging, video production, plays and sings -there is a jaw dropping piano solo in the final third of the piece. Please react to this, I so look forward to sharing your wonderment.
Yes, Yes, Yes! And still - just the tip of the iceberg😄😉👍🏼. Where to begin and where to end? And he is so generous in his sharings of processes, too - just unique🌈💝💫🌟💚🤗.
Jacob has won five Grammy Awards, all in the "Best Arrangement" categories. Two in 2017, two in 2020 and one in 2021. Also in 2021 he was nominated but did not win for Album of the Year and Best R&B Performance. In 2022 he has been nominated for two more for Best R&B Song and Best Arrangement for Instrumental and Vocals with the results coming in April. If you're interested in checking out his Grammy winning arrangements/performances they are for The Flintstones, Your And I, All Night Long, Moon River and He Won't Hold You. They're all AMAZING.
Hi Bob. I'm 60, and I consider Jacob to be the one true musical genius born in my lifetime. To give you a bit of food for thought. Things Collier does unlike any musician in history: 1. He understands tonality in ways unlike anyone ever before. In fact, he understands the EMOTIONS of tonality unlike anyone ever before. So he uses semitones unlike anyone ever before. He moves harmonic expression unlike anyone. 2. He creates musical soundscapes that defy description- as they should. 3. His time signatures, his bending of them, of expanding and contracting them to fit expression, is also unlike anyone else before. 4. His facility with instruments comes from these deep bases, and then applying them. 5. His computer literacy with his musical constructions make him uniquely the first genius to have access to their possibilities. He is the hero of many new young musicians as well he should be. You must check out the panoply of Collier's work and collaborations. Go to a Collier overload, "Moon River". Then try, as recommended below, "Fix You".
Hey Tyler thanks! It was easy easy to hear that influence. What a great influence for him too. Collier is a beast. Wow I was impressed. Can’t wait to listen to more.
Make sure you review the last song of this Home Tiny Desk Concert… and his on-site NPR Tiny Desk as well… with your headphones on! ;) His talent is boundless, and he surrounds himself with other amazing musical talents while staying humble through it all. Incredible.
Thanks Anissa for thr comments and suggestions. He is amazing and he blew my mind. When I saw the Grammys it all started to add up to what I was seeing and hearing. Wow!
Wow, what I timing! We were just re-membering, when we went to Hamburg (exactly 3 years ago today) to see/hear Jacob Collier - an AMAZING experience, I will never forget!!!🙏🏼🌈🎶💜❤️💚😃 I just love this talented beautiful human being💝. Thank you for your great reaction here! Please, let them coming😉👍🏼😅. And yes, re. the Grammys I even think they turned into 5 now, if I remember correctly😉. Oh, what a joy he is to listen to💚🌱🤗.
@@bobcieslinski You’re welcome🤗. Yeah, as soon as the possibility occoured I knew it was on that bucket list, I hadn’t even written yet!!🙏🏼😄😃💜 I really hope that you will listen/react to more from him - both for you and us🌈💚🤗.
Jacob is, obviously, a MONSTER! If you're interested, last year he performed various versions of this same song on different television programs, and they're all different and fun to compare: On Jimmy Kimmel, from his bathroom: ruclips.net/video/QAwkGI-_adI/видео.html On Jimmy Fallon: ruclips.net/video/eBmJZiF3YAo/видео.html On Later with Jools Holland: ruclips.net/video/dYEHvdNkKes/видео.html And, believe me, that is just the tippy top of the iceberg when it comes to Jacob Collier!
He guest performs with Snarky Puppy. Worth a watch. Are you surprised yet? And yes, that his 4 Grammy's sitting on the Rhodes. He composes and performs, has perfect pitch.... does some really unique work, like modulating into G half-sharp, check it out.
I would love to see your reaction to a video Jacob did discussing Harmony at 5 levels (I.e. child, college student, Pro, etc.)… it’s such an interesting video and I think you, as an educator yourself, would have a really interesting take on it!
If you're interested in this phenomena of singing with oneself, you should check out Geoff Castellucci. He's a (mostly) a capella singer. 5 octaves, from deep bass up. He's one of the founding members of the a capella group, VoicePlay. On his own channel, he often accompanies himself on keyboard. Shenandoah, his latest release, is quietly spectacular. Pure butter on the bottom notes, and silk on top. He not only sings "with himself" in the same room, he reacts to himself more and more. It's very strange and oddly convincing. Reactors sometimes find themselves knowing it's all Geoff, but still forgetting. He does the whole production: all of the arrangements of course, but also the vocal and video editing.
Could you react to Kevin from Pentatonix? He's extremely talented and has an amazing voice as well. One good one is his cover of Sign of the Times, but his cover of Friends too
I believe he occasionally gets help with the video production/editing (e.g. Moon River), but I think he often does it himself as well. The rest of it (writing, arranging, performance, recording, etc)... that's all him. If you want to completely lose your mind sometime, check out the 90-minute video where he just goes through the Logic Pro session for his Grammy-winning version of Moon River. Oh, but if you haven't seen it, FIRST DEFINITELY WATCH MOON RIVER. It'd be cool to see your reaction to it, but I honestly suggest that you just watch it for your own enjoyment. Doing the reaction and starting/stopping will ruin the experience for you. BTW, I'm a bass player, too, and I'm always amazed and mildly irritated by Jacob's prowess on bass, which is like is 10th instrument or something. 🤣

Yes, 5 grammy awards in the Best Arrangement, and nominated for the 6th one!!
Wow he is the real deal. What an amazing talent. Thanks for thr info!
My favorite part of being a Jacob fan is watching new fans and the “moment” when they discover his genius and talent.
Oh I think he is a genius. The way he arranges it all blows me away. Those Grammys are so deserved.

You should check out Jacob and Snarky Puppy "Don't You Know". Mind blowing harmonies. And, well, it's Snarky Puppy. 🙂
A great recommendation.
Wow those two together would be mind blowing thanks for the suggestion Roy!
Definitely need to watch the whole session in one sitting...it's phenomenal
They sound incredible, and different.
Thanks Gaming Farmer!!!
No problem, Mr. Cieslinski.

His most recent album, Djesse volume 3, was nominated for Album of the Year. He is a prodigious talent.
Wow I hope he wins.
1:07 i love how quickly you clocked the stevie wonder inspiration, jacob frequently says he's stevie wonder's biggest fan
Hey Tyler thanks! It was easy easy to hear that influence. What a great influence for him too. Collier is a beast. Wow I was impressed. Can’t wait to listen to more.
Best live show EVER
Yes they are four Grammys
More Jacob Collier please!!! Hallelujah and Moon River (a must!!)
Thanks for thr info and suggestions Marco!
I concur with moon river. Far from my favorite, but it's a cornerstone and a marvel.
Please react to more Jacob! Love your thoughts.
Thanks Harry! Any suggestions?
@@bobcieslinski You should look at "Didn't You Know" that he does with snarky puppy. And "All Night Long".
I would highly recommend his "Fix You" cover.
Yes, he really can sing that well, and his sense of harmony and sense of timing are unearthly accurate...
So true Michael.

He just does everything!
For sure Paul!
It was fun to hear your insight on Jacob. I'm a big fan of his and I'm happy you've gotten to know him now
I sure do want to hear more of his stuff. He’s brilliant with what he can do with such little effort.
i believe he's got perfect pitch he's one hell of a rabbit hole to explore
He sure is Stephen! I do believe I’ve seen that he does have perfect pitch. What a gift to have. It makes everything so much easier.
Great reaction thanks.
Thanks for the kind words!
4 Grammys. All instruments. All production. Modern Mozart. Perfect pitch too.
He’s a superstar.

Great observation with the Stevie Wonder comment. Stevie is his hero and Jacob is heavily influenced by him.
I didn’t know Stevie was his hero. You can easily hear it in the music Milton.
If I remember the quote from an interview his biggest inspiration/ favorite artist is Stevie. His second was… probably Stevie as well.
I jokingly call him “Stevie Wonder with a MacBook”
Man you need to react to DONT YOU WORRY ABOUT A THING BY JACOB COLLIER
I’ll check it out Yeremiah. Thanks!

He just blew me away with thr new Oentatonix video I just finished. He sings at thr end of it. Tune in next Tuesday for that one Subkissed Melanin.
reminds me of Steely Dan's Aja Album
You should react to one of Louis Cole’s live sessions or Overtime by Knower!
Or clown core, which is (not) Louis Cole
Sounds good William thanks!
greatest living musician. Anything else is a waste of breath. I'm surprised your students did not tell you about him. Many will know his work I bet.
He is amazing what he can do and his perfect pitch and natural ability. I think my students are too young to know him.
