    • @MrGunwitch
      @MrGunwitch 8 лет назад

      Is it possible it could have been for excessive talking at the table? I watched Daniel beat Steve Rubin on the back tables in Rd 13 or 14 and he was jabbering excessively the whole time. Steve is a super nice guy so he was just sort of rolling with it, but I could tell he was getting annoyed, particularly when Cathro was yapping away during complex decision moments in the game and Steve was one match loss away from being eliminated from top 8 contention.
      The commentary drowns out a lot of the chat at the table, and Owen had an enormous amount riding on the outcome of this match, and after nosediving from a 10-0 position was visibly on edge.
      For the record, this is just a theory, the judge could've pulled Daniel aside for a completely different reason, but when I saw it happen I instantly thought that it could've been for excessive table chat.
      Also for the record, Daniel played extremely well and I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him in the future. He pretty handily beat Rubin in what I thought was a tough matchup, and he's obviously not intimidated by playing at the highest level.

    At around the 21:00 minute mark, Owen has the option of flashing in a deep fiend, but in order to do it, would have to sacrifice a creature, leaving exactly three creatures in play while deep fiend is on the stack. He knows Daniel has the pariah, meaning that Daniel could, in response to deep fiend, flash in an pariah by discarding it to haunted dead, sacrifice haunted dead and the two spirits, then make Own sacrifice his board, leaving Own with a deep fiend but no emrakrul and daniel with two abolishers.
    Surprised they didn't comment on that, especially considering a similar thing happened on the last turn.

      Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, if it entered from your graveyard or you cast it from your graveyard, return Prized Amalgam from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped at the beginning of the next end step.
      Since he is casting Haunted Dead from the Graveyard by discarding two cards, he is triggering Prized Amalgam.

    At 15:54 Owen could have won the game 1 but did not...
    He knows from earlier that Daniel does have Murderous Compulsion... so he must know he can't win with only attacking for the madness trick we just see.
    Alternate line: play Gnarlwood Dryad, emerge Elder Deep-Fiend tapping all black mana. Emrakuhl attack and win !
    Note: saccing Ishkanah or a token will not work because Daniel could also make Owen sacrifice 3 creatures.
    Mention Marshall at 32:51: "He did play brilliantly the first game" ...

    • @Jsmuuve
      @Jsmuuve 8 лет назад +1

      You can. But, Elder Deep-Fiend is not yet on the Battlefield when Abolisher would resolve, so Owen has no creatures that Daniel could kill, and Kozilek's Return does 5 damage when flashed from the grave, which is enough to kill an Abolisher of Bloodlines.So short answer: He can, but it would be absolutely meaningless because the outcome would be exactly the same whether he chose to transform or not.

That was so unnecessary, he should've just kept the Mana open for Haunted Dead, there was nothing Owen could do at this point except for wiping the board anyways, there wasn't even enough Mana for the Relentless recursion. Also, why didn't he sac his stuff for Pariah in response to Kozilek's Return at ~12:10?

    Daneiel Cathro?

  • @Tokeyo107
    @Tokeyo107 8 лет назад +1

    You get priority after someone discards a madness card because of the "When you discard this card, discard it into exile" clause so Owen could have won game 1 by playing the deep-fiend in response to the madness trigger from the murderous compulsion therefore negating Daneiel's ability to cast he murderous compulsion and forcing him to place it directly into the graveyard

    • @Tokeyo107
      @Tokeyo107 8 лет назад +1

      there are a number of factors that could have lead to such a mistake, first of all since Owen is a pro and has a team to test with he probably played mostly in paper because he didn't need to use MTGO to play and without an online magic experience with the set most players wouldn't even know that you even got priority before a player gets to put a madness card on the stack let alone actually use that priority in a game. Also Daniel immediately put murderous compulsion on the stack targeting Emrakul completely skipping the madness trigger. I don't know whether or not it would have been correct for a judge to step in and force the players to acknowledge the trigger but it defiantly would have swinged the game. Although Owen did win the series it is still sad to see such a misplay lose someone the game especially at this high of a level but what do I know, I'm not in the pro tour and I definitely don't want to come off as one of the people who nit pick every little mistake in the comments section but I felt that this one was important considering it lost Owen the game (but luckily not the series) and it couldn't have been that hard to spot considering a lucksack scrub like me could have seen it :)

    • @petripiiroinen7901
      @petripiiroinen7901 8 лет назад

      How would it have helped? Deep-Fiend only taps stuff. Emrakul would still be tapped. Tapping lands would be useless, as you can get the mana in response.

    • @da-ninja
      @da-ninja 8 лет назад +1

      You are totally right, Owen did make a huge mistake here. Alternatively he could have cast EDF at 22:22 before declaring attackers, tapping 4 black lands. Voldaren Pariah can make Owen sac 3, but he has 3 spiders to spare. And Daniel can't respond with Murderous Compulsion, since it can only target TAPPED creatures. Owen did know Daniel's hand since he controlled him a turn before. He also must know all the current sets as a PRO, knowing that there is nothing Daniel could have possibly drawn that could kill an untapped Emrakul during Owen's own turn. And if two peasants as you and me can spot this line of victory, a pro like Owen should have as well. Especially since he is player of the year now as well...

    • @JEDepraz
      @JEDepraz 8 лет назад

      People, you can tap the lands before the guy casts his spell from exile, but he can still get the mana from them in response and use it when he gets priority back. -_-
      As for the second point, first there is To the Slaughter that can kill an untapped Emrakul on your opponent's turn ; and Murderous Compulsion wasn't in Cathro's hand yet when Owen controlled him for the first time.
      You should make sure you understand everything that's going on before making those sorts of claims...

    • @warriorkr
      @warriorkr 8 лет назад

      You are wrong, firstly creeper, Daniel will just add the mana in response so taht argumentation is deeply stupid, pun intended secondly, in 22.22 ony two spiders where alive, so no, it doesn't work.

  • @gabrielrios6463
    @gabrielrios6463 8 лет назад

    Blue black zombies looks like so much fun, but ultimately the deck compared to Turtenwalds is much slower and has less ways to power through the library. So many turns Cathro was just playing a creature that didn't impact the board and passing the turn. We got to see what his deck was capable in full force in game 1 but that was because of his amazing draw. Turtenwald's deck on the other hand is able to sift through his library to find what he needs while also making Emrakul cheaper to cast.

  • @tylerdanielewicz4693
    @tylerdanielewicz4693 8 лет назад

    When Cathro killed emrakul in game 1 with murderous compulsion, couldn't turtenwald have sacrificed emrakul to play elder deep fiend? Or he could have at least don't that before murderous compulsion to tap cathro's blockers since he knew Cathro had a murderous compulsion?

    • @michaellogan2780
      @michaellogan2780 8 лет назад +1

      Yes he could have sacrificed it to the elder deep fiend, but blockers were already declared so it would have changed nothing and Owen would have been forced to use his Kozelik's Return right then. Had he cast the deep fiend and tapped the blockers, Daniel still gets a blocker off the haunted dead and nothing changes. The correct line of play since Owen knew about the murderous compulsion from controlling Daniel turn previously was to cast the deep fiend and tap Daniel's lands. Daniel would not be able to target Emrakul with murderous compulsion since it would not be tapped at the time, thus allowing Owen to attack with lethal.

    Does anyone else just shake their head to know WotC can create MTG Duels, looking awesome, but are content with MTGO looking like it was made in 2000. Who exactly is playing MTG Duels? What market is this for where you only get some of the cards?

    • @jesselukes5796
      @jesselukes5796 8 лет назад

      Don't play online then. Paper is better.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 8 лет назад +3

      You're right. Why would I want to practice 24/7 to get better? Why would I expect WotC to port the level of graphics in a game no one plays to MTGO...ya know, the game people actually play.
      This is not about online vs paper. This is about WotC making the most bone head decisions completely unnecessarily. They release Duels and restrict the cards? Good thinking. Cuz lots of people want to play a with gimped card pool.
      The least they could do is license the name to a studio that will create a nice looking product. Hex and Eternal have proven you can make a great looking client on a fraction of MTGO's budget. Please think before you reply.

    • @MSUHitman
      @MSUHitman 8 лет назад

      Duels has all of the cards since its release with Origins. It's a pretty good intro for those on XB1 or iOS.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 8 лет назад

      Yeah, and that's cool for those people. I don't want to take away Duels. I want WotC to put 2 and 2 together and port the great graphics and interface to MTGO.
      I boggles my mind they haven't figured out why Hearthstone has passed them in the online arena. Because it looks like a game made in the last 10 years.
      And Blizzard was smart and made the game affordable to everyone. No need to go out and spend $8-1000 on a modern deck or $3-500 on a standard one.
      Listen, I love Diablo but can't really call myself a blizzard fan. They don't innovate, they simplify then mass market others' ideas. But in this area, they did well. WotC is leaving so much money on the table.

    • @MSUHitman
      @MSUHitman 8 лет назад

      I agree MTGO is unacceptable, but it seems Wizards isn't going to do anything about it.
      You do have to spend hundreds of $ if you want to have a top tier Hearthstone deck though since there's no singles market.

      But yeah, can you imagine, it's you're HoF weekend and you are 1 game from losing 4 straight win and in games to lose top 8.

      I am not surprised he was tilted because he had just lost g1 to some random deck with a rookie protour player pilotting it.

    • @mattm7798
      @mattm7798 8 лет назад

      I have to admit I can get tilted also on MTGO when my pro level Grixis Delver deck gets beat by some random mono green stompy thing. It's like you think "pfff, that deck doesnt have articles written about it...it should never beat my tested and tuned deck"

    • @altron6476
      @altron6476 8 лет назад +4

      I hate the term "pro"...hes just like every other player who net decks their way to top spot at a card shop. I personally like players like Daniel more, because they don't just build whatever deck is the best at the time, they actually use some effort and build their own brews and learn how to play them well. Its actually pretty awesome that Daniel did that well with a zombie deck in a pro tour. As a zombie player myself...its actually a pretty big deal seeing a deck like this make it so far.

    • @vultabult
      @vultabult 8 лет назад +2

      There is literally nothing wrong with net decking. If someone has the intention of doing well, it only seems logical to play the best decks.

    can somebody explain why owen doesn't just win if he casts elder deep fiend at 22.26

    • @Zerokey77
      @Zerokey77 8 лет назад +1

      he was playing safe at 4 creature if he played edf he and say targeted the land dainel would play voldern in responce get rid of emeral crul leaving him only with edf and no flyers or reach

    • @da-ninja
      @da-ninja 8 лет назад

      He does win if he casts EDF at 22:22 before declaring attackers and taps 4 black lands! I saw this line right away and was really shocked Owen didn't. There is no way Daniel can own Owen there, Voldaren Pariah can make him sac 3 creatures, but he has 3 spiders to spare. Murderous Compulsion can indeed kill Emrakul during Owen's turn if it's madnessed, but if Owen casts EDF pre-combat, Emrakul is not tapped yet and thus can't be targeted with Compulsion. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Compulsion is the ONLY sorcery speed madness removal card in Daniel's colors capable of killing Emrakul. I understand that Owen is under a lot of pressure here, but this line of victory seems a little too obvious for somebody as good as he is :)

      +Lao Bushido abolisher of bloodlines's ability reads: when this creature transforms into abolisher of bloodlines, target opponent sacrifices three creatures. So Owen could've sacrificed his ishkanah and spiders instead of emrakul

    • @corgad
      @corgad 8 лет назад

      I think the issue is that although LSV top 8 3 times, he didn't make it into worlds last year (which I believe contributed to player of the year; notably first and second was Seth and Owen) and he also only ran/succeeded at the team gp. Basically LSV has 3 top 8s and that is it. Seth and Owen both had 1 top 8 before the event, success at worlds, and multiple gp finishes.

  • @dr_volberg

    Yukuhiro made the last game way too difficult for himself. Duke had 5/7 and 8/8 blockers, Emrakul is 13 power so Chandra only had to deal 2 damage not 4.

    I may be alone with this thought, but I feel like Owen is somewhat conceited and just does not seem like someone I would want to be friends with. Glad he did well, congrats on making Magic history, just seems like the way he acts towards certain people and reacts to winning is not what most Magic players respond well to.
