" Where are the shoty police?" 😂 Love it! I need to take a look at my shelves to see what I can get in for this because I am trying to get my current tbr read first. All of these books sound so interesting.
"Where is the Shorty police?" 🤣 That's the beauty of Shorty September -- it's up to you. I allow myself to go up to 250 but try to keep it around 225. You have some great-sounding choices. Also, sorry to hear things have been tough with your mom, your back (I'm with you on that!), and work.
“The Buddha in the Attic” is very good. It’s told as fragments of omniscient observations - almost stream of consciousness. A good portion of it told the story of Japanese Americans being evacuated from their homes and being transported to internment camps in the American west during WWII.
Hello, Britta! I’m new to your channel and am intrigued by your “shorty” list! I just finished Death Comes for the Archbishop-my first Willa Cather but certainly not my last! The writing is gorgeous!
Hi Britta, I have also been obsessed with Eve Babitz for many years. I learned so much about Los Angeles from her book, Eve's Hollywood. I might want to own a copy. Picture Brides are very well-known in Hawaii. I think I heard of that title. Aloha.
These all sound like fascinating books. I'm all for Shorty September. Most of the books I buy to read these days are 200 pages or shorter. (Although I've been reading what I own lately, so several books I've been reading _are_ longer.) My ability to read a book a day has faded over the years. I find myself reading more slowly these days. New Directions is a favorite publisher. And they bring a lot of translated works into English.
I hope you enjoy The Buddha in the Attic, Julie Otsuka is one of my favourite writers. I've loved everything of hers I've read. I added a couple of these to my want to read list so thanks for that. I hope you have a good visit with your mother, hope she's doing well.
I may sneak in a few shorties but I'm focussing on books to read before I attend Festival America at the end of September. I'll be interested to hear what you think about The Buddha in the Attic. I read it with my Normandy Book Club a few years ago. I have The Wedding on my list as well. Sounds like a great list Britta. You got this because as you said where is the Shorty September police.😂Happy reading!
❤📚❤️ I enjoyed seeing all of these shorter books, most I've not heard of. I'll be reading Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Also, for Spinster September, I'm reading The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark (which qualifies for Shorty September, bonus!). Sipsworth by Simon Van Booy (240 pgs 😅 😉). That's probably all I'll be able to do, as I'm also reading The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sherriff and September by Rosamunde Pilcher, because when else. 😁
What an interesting book selection! I have noted down a few for my wishlist ;) The Good Women of China is a punch in the stomach - it took me several days to go through, because although short, each chapter took a lot of digesting :(
I own Eudora Welty's The Optimist's Daughter but haven't read it. I think. Because when you explained the plot, it sounded so familiar. I'll have to drag it out and give it a read/re-read.
Such a good idea. I rounded up my list of possibilities from last year and guess what? I had only read three of four of them. Maybe that’s where to start!
I'm currently reading A Lost Lady by Willa Cather. It would also work for shorty Sept I might read Spoon River Anthology as well. I heard about it from the channel Guilty Feat
Thanks, Britta!🌷That sounds like a great plan! Yesterday I finished a short book which you’ll probably already know, it’s Medea by Christa Wolf with an Introduction by Margaret Atwood. I was blown away by the retelling of the story from a plausible, feminist point of view. Today I re-read Euripides’s play (I love Robin Robertson’s translation) and the comparison’s with C. Wolf’s version gave me food for thought. I have already some reading plans for September, but, inspired by yours, I pulled out Death Comes for the Archbishop and The Wedding from a pile of books I would like to read in 2024. I hope your mother is doing reasonably well and wish you both all the best.
Oh, yes Medea, wonderful pick! I read it in school, maybe time for a reread? ☺️ I hope you will enjoy Wedding & the Willa Cather. And thank you very much for your well-wishes!!
I'll be reading The Importance of Wives, the House of Valois by Keira Morgan, Henry VII shows up on the list of characters. I'm going to read Shadows On the Rock by Willa Cather, set in old Quebec, love that place. Trying to finish my leftover reads first, but I started Bad, Bad Seymour Brown as a treat, been enjoying Susan Isaacs since the eighties. Read Death Comes to the Archbishop and her Nebraska set books, love her works, and Eudora Welty too. Flashback to asymmetrical eighties on the hair, you're styling just fine.
Haha, yes, 80ies-flashback, I remember the asymmetrical hairdo! 😂 It sounds like you have a wonderful list. And yay to Willa Cather Eudora Welty. Happy reading!
Britta struggles with bun.🤓Intrigued by your casual mention of a book you are working on. I tried to read The Optimists Daughter some time ago and couldn’t get into it so I DNF’d it. The shorty police only drive compact size police cars.
Fingers crossed re Optimist's Daughter... And thank you for letting me know about the Shorty Police. I was wondering: Do you think there's a Bun Police as well? 😅
Really interesting selection. The Fool looks like a perfect read for this shorty September! It’s hosted by the marvellous @pastorytime and @toomanyheathers 🩳♥️🩳 Happy reading!
Thanks for the reading ideas! You always make me smile. I'm glad your bun went south, as I think the low bun is very elegant. 💕💕
Oh, thank you! ❤️
Shorty September was started and is hosted by Siân and Bert from Pastory Time and is also co-hosted by Heather from Too Many Heathers.
Thank you very much!!
" Where are the shoty police?" 😂 Love it! I need to take a look at my shelves to see what I can get in for this because I am trying to get my current tbr read first. All of these books sound so interesting.
Haha, yes, the Shorty Police better stay at home. 😂 I hope you found some good shorty-books on your shelves!
Very interesting collection of shorties. I am putting most of them on my wishlist.
That is wonderful. to hear! ❤️

Yep, no Shorty Police! ☺️ ANd thank you for caring about all my issues (Mum, back, work), I really appreciate it.
This looks like an interesting collection. I think I read The Good Women of China. Looking forward to hearing what you think about all of them.
I'm very much looking forward to the Xinran. Not easy to find books by female Chines authors, transl. into English...
Good luck with your pile of possibilities for Shorty September. I'm hoping to get a few done too.
Thank you very much. Happy reading!

Oh, that's good to hear about Buddha! Very much looking forward to reading it.
I’m also reading Slow Days, Fast Company for shorty September! Looking forward to hearing your views!
Oh, that's great! I hope we will both like it.
Hello, Britta! I’m new to your channel and am intrigued by your “shorty” list!
I just finished Death Comes for the Archbishop-my first Willa Cather but certainly not my last! The writing is gorgeous!
Welcome to my channel, happy to have you, Kathy!! ❤️And yes, Cather's writing is wonderful.
Hi Britta, I have also been obsessed with Eve Babitz for many years. I learned so much about Los Angeles from her book, Eve's Hollywood. I might want to own a copy. Picture Brides are very well-known in Hawaii. I think I heard of that title. Aloha.
Eve Babitz was such an interesting woman! I loved Eve's Hollywood. Have you read the bio about her, Hollywood's Eve? I really liked it.
I've just finished The Leopard Skin Hat by Anne Serre and thought it was fantastic. Thank you for pointing me towards another to look at.
Leopard Skin is on my list as well! (It was a bit difficult to get for me, so I decided to start with The Fool.)
Good luck for the work situation and thank you for your efforts, love your posts!
Thank you very much!! ❤️

New Directions is wonderful! And I hear you when it comes to slower reading...

Happy reading to you as well, Didi! And that Festival sounds amazing, have fun! ❤️
Thanks Britta!
The Buddha in the Attic is one of my vest books of the year . Its written in questions, very thought-provoking.
Spoiler alert 😊: I'e finished it and I really loved it as well!
Great....I ended up buying her two other books but have not read them yet.
@@sandra7319. I will buy them, too! 🤩
Sending best wishes to you and your mom. xo
Thank you so very much!! ❤️

Happy to hear you liked the selection! I've started Good Women, and boy, you're right, this is indeed a punch in the stomach!
I own Eudora Welty's The Optimist's Daughter but haven't read it. I think. Because when you explained the plot, it sounded so familiar. I'll have to drag it out and give it a read/re-read.
Oh, that happens to me all the time (= not being sure whether I read a book). 😅
Isn't it nice to know that you're not the only one? I find that strangely comforting.
Such a good idea. I rounded up my list of possibilities from last year and guess what? I had only read three of four of them. Maybe that’s where to start!
Sounds like a good place to start, yes! ☺️ Happy reading, Penelope!
I'm currently reading A Lost Lady by Willa Cather. It would also work for shorty Sept
I might read Spoon River Anthology as well. I heard about it from the channel Guilty Feat
I really liked Lost Lady, I hope you will, too. And I will check out Spoon River, thank you!

Sorry to hear it’s been tough with your mom. These are some good options for me but I’m starting my Victober early which means long. 😂
Thank you, David. And happy early Victober-reading.
These are a couple of very worthwhile short shorties to fill a gap: The Red Pony by Steinbeck and The Order of the Day by Eric Vuillard
Thank you very much for the tips!

I think as long as you refer to any bun as “a messy bun” the bun police cannot arrest you.
@@BookishTexan Phew! Seems I dodged the bullet on this one! 😅
🚨🚨🚨Where is the Shorty police?
🤣
Requested the woman in the purple skirt from my library
I hope it's good!
I have read short books in august-september. As a reader with dyslexia, short books are a börsinfo.
Happy to hear short books work for you!
Really interesting selection. The Fool looks like a perfect read for this shorty September! It’s hosted by the marvellous @pastorytime and @toomanyheathers 🩳♥️🩳 Happy reading!
Oh, yes, of course, thank you for the information. And happy reading to you as well!
