Baseball is my favorite sport, but I agree 100% with Colin. Baseball is a slower sport than football and basketball. There are more lulls, more commercial breaks, more conferences between refs/coaches, and a great way to get young fans involved is to have crazy, bizarre, and energetic players and personalities. People want these guys to act like robots out on the field and when you hit a homerun after the guy in front of you is intentionally walked, you should be allowed to flip your bat and talk a little trash. I love the Giants, but Yasiel Puig to me was the most interesting player in the league (this year he's been hurt). I had to watch him play: he was not only off to a fantastic start, but the way he hustled, the way he played with reckless abandonment, his bat flips, it was entertaining as hell. Baseball needs to lighten up a little bit and embrace the personalities and bat flips and celebrating.

Because everybody is always going to use stall tactics to win or gain an edge in any sport. Football time outs to ice the kicker, Basketball time outs to stop the other team who just ripped off 11 unanswered points. When a batter steps out of the box he realizes that the pitcher is in the zone. Too many pitching changes ,over specialization and starting pitchers not pitching complete games anymore have contributed immensely slowing down the game. Colin is wrong about Baseball because he thinks that if millenials don't like something that they'll stay stuck on their opinions and tastes at 35 or 45 that they had at 20. That's like telling a teenage boy to go play with GI Joe action figures like they're still a 6 yr old. Baseball has some real advantages that football and basketball don't have. Its the most affordable ticket out of the 3 sports try taking a family to basketball or football ( pretty darn expensive ) game. It's considered the best Father & Son bonding sport between the 3 sports. Baseball needs to market itself better to a more family oriented sport demographic just like Pixar does in the movie business ( Walmart, Target, J C Penny, McDonalds, PetSmart, Petco, Home Depot, pickup trucks and SUV's ). Market to late 30 something to 40 something parents who have little boys and quit marketing with the tradition angle to old white males.

If I were commish. Shorten the regular season at Labor Day, get rid of the DH and PITCHERS WOULD NO LONGER HIT, there I just solved the DH controversy once and for all, Shorten the game from 9 to 7 innings, besides starting pitchers now days don't go 9 or 8 innings anymore, limit pitching changes and trips to the mound and batters stepping out of the batters box to a whole game just like timeouts in football, pitcher gets a pitch clock just like basketball and football have a play and shot clock, intentional walks will be awarded and not having the pitcher throw 4 pitches (shut up I know traditionalists about errant throws). There should probably a tie like in hockey & soccer as well (because MLB has too many OT games compared to other sports and spring training and the All Star game have a tie).

love this video gives a whole new perspective on how baseball is stuck in the past. i have umpired for years and grew up playing this game. your 100% right emotion has never had a place in baseball. its the way i was taught the game and it fits into all those unwritten rules within the sport. its even carried over to my umpiring, to where I'm stricter than most because of the respect i have for the game. maybe your right though its time for the game to adopt and it def start with umpires at the younger age letting kids be more emotional while still respecting the game.

I knew you would say that as a African American. Which is why Afro Latino and now increasingly even Afro Euros are replacing African Americans in baseball. There's the racism angle still in this country towards the black player however with Jackie Robinson MLB had more blacks than the NBA and NFL for most of the 1950's. It probably doesn't seem to mix that well with the Hip Hop culture the way football & basketball does and I would say it's base doesn't like loud opinionated players the way especially the NBA does. Baseball is ball & chained to tradition, they don't like dynamic high energy charismatic players like football and basketball does. The NBA Finals has the same TV ratings as does The World Series which at least has to compete with the NFL and College football during it's same time slot. If the NBA finals were going on during the same time they would get a 7 or 8 rating ( Law & Order SVU......Dancing with the Stars would crush the NBA finals head to head ) The NFL is the 800lb gorilla in the room and the NBA acknowledges that.....why do you think ABC doesn't televise against them and waits till after the Superbowl. I played baseball from age 5 to 18. I wasn't great but I was somewhat athletic and felt like it was just what athletic high school kids did. Year after I graduated they started a lacrosse program in spring and I wish so bad I had the chance to try it, cuz it hit me senior year that baseball is torturously boring, both in games and practices, and I literally haven't sat through nine innings since. I've argued with Europeans about the merits of American football as entertainment (there certainly are some) but there are many facets of baseball that require serious logical gymnastics to defend

There are two things that contribute to the "old school" BS: The "unwritten rules" guys like Papelbon adhere to, and the fact that benches and bullpens clear every time two guys look cross-eyed at each other. That needs to stop, and Manfred has the power to do it: Mandate 10-game suspensions for anyone that leaves the dugout or bullpen when a fight or argument breaks out, except for the managers. (To protect batters and runners, this covers anyone not involved in the fight in the outfield too). Similarly, 5-game suspension for any pitcher who is judged to throw at any batter in a retaliatory manner, because the umpires' warning system is just not good enough.

Each team plays 162 games for upwards of 3 hours each, while the NFL plays only 16 games for around 4 hours each. +Patrick Dukemajian I don't think you understand the nature of the rule at all. It prevents easy double plays, and leaves the guy on base who earned the base. Stolen base stats and runs scored are attributed to the deserving player, and on base percentages are not boosted for players who pop up. Also takes out the strategy of getting slower baserunners on base whenever you get the chance. That's an unfair advantage to the defense. Just a few reasons.

The MLB is a joke for most markets who will never win unless they line up the perfect low budget team that can beat a 200m dollar team. Something like 27 of the last 35 World Series have gone to large market teams. I stopped watching because the games took to long and my team will never win a world series with a 50m $ cap going up against 220m $ yankees.

In other words baseball more inclusive and share its pastime with the international community.

All of you are wrong.. if you knew the game it was in the late innings and the Indians were up 7-1. Jose Ramirez flipped the bat right infront of the coaches and showed them up. It's an unwritten rule in baseball. If it was a close game and it was late innings it's different story but they were up 6 late in the ball game.

If every top hitter was juicing, there would be it least 10 guys with 65+ HR. Not only that, the top 5 would be 70-85+ HR. Big Mac and Bonds hit 70+ in there late 30's when they where on steroids. Just imagine a young 25-28 year old could do.

Think about it like this: If steroids were allowed, and consequently, those players who initally indulge emerged to be at the top of the sport, it would end up becoming an unofficial requirement to even be competitive. Most players wouldn't have any other choice BUT to start doping in order to be competitive. That's not fun.

Baseball is a game from a slower more methodical era in society. The rest of the world sped up and our brains have been rewired so our bodies tell us, "This is too slow...we need more stimulation." The problem with baseball isn't the culture or lack of marketing or that it's not in line with modern pop culture. The problem is the game can't be modified in a way to make it keep up with the need we feel for constant stimulation. Football and basketball are getting more and more popular because they are in near constant motion or have fast bursts of action at shorter intervals. Baseball is not meant for our time.

On a side not, I still don't understand why the NBA doesn't lower the rim? Its not that women are weak or or can't play well, but if you do the Math and percentages, most women are not as tall as men, and even though the rim is not asd tall as the men's, its still unrealistically tall. AS FOR BASEBALL, the sport and its strategies doesn't courage a lot of stealing, it doesn't encourage a lot of bunts and the players take too long at the batters box. And the ads and "TV Breaks" slow the game down.

Baseball has unwritten rules, Colin. Rules that are as old as the game. You can celebrate a homerun, sure. Go ahead. Expect to be beaned in your next at-bat if you cross the imaginary line of acceptable behavior. It’s that simple. The umpires know what to do. Everything will get worked out. If the young guys have a problem with that, then so what? They’ll eventually be the older veterans and can change the culture. But that’ll never happen because the unwritten rules are as old as the game. It’s that simple.

I think it's worth noting that in hockey, fans love the fights on the ice. They generally let the 2 guys go at it for a minute until they both get tired and that's the end of the drama. In baseball, however, it's revenge for some perceived disrespectful act that could have occurred the previous season. It comes across as petty and childlike. At least that's the way it looks to me.

And that just goes to show that players can be very flashy in baseball, but there's no good reason to rub other players', fans', or coaches' noses in your abilities. The scoreboard does that all on its own.

I am glad that Colin BRIEFLY talked about the gambling at 0:26. Why isn't that talked about more because I believe that WILL be a problem. Look, once you introduce that idea into ANY sports, don't tell me there are not temptations for owners, players and others to rig the game or take a bribe or bet JUST to make money and sacrifice the game or "a fall". Come on. Use your common sense. HOW LONG is it, until ANY MOB organization wants its "cut" into the ONLINE or in person booking bets profits? It is NOT a good idea, because sooner or later, you will have 1,514.6 more PETE ROSE-like-people doing bets against their own teams or points spread. don't be naive. ACCORDING TO THE LAW, nowadays, IT IS LEGAL FOR ANYBODY including the athletes or the coach to do betting in his sport or on ANY TEAM. What if a player puts bets on his own team or the opposing team, in baseball, Football or hockey? WHO WOULD KNOW??? What if a player loses a lot of money on a bet? If he gets killed,, EVEN IF his bet had nothing to do with the game that his team played, will the AUTHORITIES an d commisioners of that sport, care if he dies? Probably not.

As a college ball player we are cool with a bat flip when its a walk off or a shot that ties it but when its 7-1 in the 8th that just unsportsman like. it would be like the warriors putting in steph curry when their up my 20 with a minute left in the 4th and on a fast break pulling up and draining a 3. Its just sportsman like to show up the your opposition.

But most bat flips are big hrs to win, take the lead or tie the game (this ramirez one was big in the game, jose bautista in the playoffs was massive pretty much won a series let alone a game) and they cause big fights and conflicts. Guys arent out there bat flipping in blow out. In fact there was at least two brawls in ncaa baseball this year from bat flips on big hrs
People are just too sensitive and cant stand to see others having fun while beating them. You dont want guys to bat flip? Dont give up the hr. You dont want Cam to celebrate a first down or td? Stop him. You dont want nba guys mocking you or showing you up? Dont get dunked on or dont get swatted. Beat them or they can celebrate and talk some trash. Its part of the game i love the emotion
