- Oliver, who is nearly 2 years old, was awe-struck when he noticed an in-store ad featuring a boy using a wheelchair, just like he does. His mom captured the now-viral moment in a photo and Kelly brings Oliver and his mom on the show to meet the boy in the ad, 10-year-old Colton, who has spina bifida. The two kids show how much representation of people with disabilities matters.

Katherine wins understatement of the year: "I grew up with a grandmother who was very inclusive..."
Her grandmother is the founder of Special Olympics.
Wow I didnt know that, I wish kelly had so she could've said so and they could've talked about it. I know she's Maria Shriver's daughter and related the the Kennedy's, who was her grandmother?
@@LTilli313 I also wish Kelly could have talked about it. Her grandmother is Eunice Kennedy Shriver. You can find more information about the story behind SO under the "about" tab on their website: specialolympics.org.
It is so fun to be a part of! If anyone wants to participate but cannot make a long term time commitment they can volunteer for a day or two at a tournament. It's always a great time!!
@@LTilli313 You mean Maria Shriver's daughter. This is Katherine Schwarzenegger?
@@lavans06 yes that was a typo. She couldn't be two peoples granddaughter at once.
Not only is that not even true like how would you know even? But what does inclusiveness have to do with any of this?
Kelly with zero ego, sitting on the floor, full-on support mommy mode. ❤
I wouldn't say that...
That’s exactly how Kelly is 😂😂😂😂
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072kelly has always been humbe wdym.
It's truly amazing to see a HUMAN that HAPPENS to be a celebrity. She's so genuine and lovely. ❤
Colton is such a special boy. His potential is limitless and when he started crying... I was done 😭😭😭😭
So was I
I cried as well. What a heart. Love this interview especially cause I work at Target. Makes me happy.
He is definitely an old soul!
The fact that they are making up too much hype for this I surprised he allowed himself to be on stage

I'm sobbing. It's fine. It's totally fine.
Did Kelly write this? 🤔😂

Yup I wasn’t prepared for this one it’s such a beautiful story so inspiring :)
Casey Fitzsimmons yes!
I’m also in a wheelchair (powered wheelchair) and seeing a boy in a wheelchair as a role model to another boy in a wheelchair had me literally sobbing

Sure 🙄
I am too
Kelly is one of the best things to ever happen to the talk show world, she is incredible. It is really awesome how humble she is, she don’t even seem like a celebrity. I never get a feeling she thinks she’s better than her guests in any way.
Blimey get the tissues for everyone... And Kelly calmed down Oliver, she's amazing.
I also have Spina Bifida and am a wheelchair user as well. I turned 39 yesterday and felt the same as the little boy looking at the ad! Also, we don't like the term "wheelchair bound" because we are not attached to our wheelchairs, They are a tool that we use to get from point A to point B.
Totally agree!! I have Spina Bifida too 😀
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Thank you for sharing your story!!!
I have Spina Bifida as well
I have Spina Bifida too!! I’m 35! This is so special
Yep! Thank you for sharing this good good feedback !!!
DIsability positive language is important! "Wheelchair user" is so much better than "wheelchair bound". A wheelchair is freedom, not something that holds you back :)
Amy Miller agreed
Thank you for sharing that. I don't know that I've ever used the term wheelchair bound, but I will be sure to never use it going forward. I'm always grateful when people share their feelings and reactions to words or phrases that offend them in a loving way, explaining just why the word or phrase is or can be offensive. Much love to you.
Bound means your tied something dont think thats wrong sorry. Get your marketing ideas out of here

I knew the little boy was just scared when they came out, but I broke down when Colton was crying. It was such a beautiful moment. Uh, my heart. They have awesome moms and they're awesome little boys.
I've been a fan of Kelly since idol, and a fan of the show, but with no bias, The Kelly Clarkson Show is a breath of fresh air.
Kelly has the best talk show ever. She has regular everyday people and she is so down to earth. ❤️
I love Kelly, she is such a kind and loving person.
Colton is such a great role model.
Kelly and her team are amazing!! Besides genuinely caring, they are raising awareness. 5 of my siblings were born hearing-impaired. Our strong mother started us working as kids to develop confidence & responsibility. They paid for their education and still work as a social worker, master electrician, junior accountant, Christian minister, and paramedic. I'm humbled every day by their example. Many people don't realize someone with a disability must work harder every day to perform at the level of a non-handicapped person, so raising awareness on any level or age using her platform shows remarkable consideration.
Nancy Wow how many siblings do you have?
@@helin4397 I am one of 7. When I look at the mothers featured on Kelly's show, my heart grows with compassion for those parents who are raising special needs kids and those who are raising more than one.
Did you watch that recent episode with that 3-year old hearing-impaired girl from Massachusetts?
@@tvtimetravel Thank you so much for letting me know! I missed it but I will find it and watch.
@James Petrone You are very kind, thank you! And, I find during challenging times, especially, they shine brighter and teach us so much about determination, resilience, and strength. Very humbling to say the least.
aw oliver instantly calmed down when he sat with kelly
Colton is adorable and so positive with the most refreshing smile!!!! God bless you and your family!!!!🇹🇹💙🙏
You can hear in his mothers trembling voice shes nervous and proud and wants to happy cry . bless them all
I have Spina Bifida in the lower lumbar area, and growing up I would have loved to see me being represented by all the kids ads I saw in-store and in the magazines. Keep rockin it, kid. You will go far, because you know you can.
P.S. I love you and your music Kelly. Thank you for giving my pain a voice and making me feel heard and understood. I send you all my love. May you and your beautiful family be forever blessed.xoxo

My mom always said: we are the handicapped person, I ask he why? She said: because we always having doubts and putting things on hold. And those who we called them handicaps; those are the ones: that don’t stop believing that they can do it, even if most of the people say you can’t. The reverse the word:I can and I will. At home my mom never believed in differences, everyone was welcome. Take care y’all 💜🌹♥️
I'm crying again reading this. Love your mom..
Your mother was very wise. What a great role model for you!
Emir Aditya Thank you for your kindness and beautiful words. She’s probably smiling right back at you 💜🌹♥️

Oliver and Colton are so adorable.💚 4:03 Colton stopped crying and relaxed when everyone cheered for him. Kids need positive reactions.
I salute that boy. The only difference between me and him is that I can walk.
When Colton started crying I did too. I hope he can continue to inspire others .

I have seen this a few times now, Kelly and it is sooooooo impactful, I am 35 and I felt/feel like these two little boys this was a great thing you did
These children are pure sunshine. 💖💖💖
This is the most heartwarming thing I have ever seen. ❤😭
This is cool! Also kudos to Target for hiring a model who actually uses a wheelchair instead of a model who poses in one. Many times companies will do things in the name of inclusivity and visibility, but they do it all wrong. Looks like this was exactly what needed to happen and exactly how it needed to happen. This is so wonderful! The positive impact visibility has on individuals is incalculable 💕
ok WOW Colton you are inspirational and Oliver you are sooooooooo cute!!!
@kelly Clarkson thank you so much for bringing this amazing lil boy to ur show...i am a 46yr old woman that was born with spina bifida as well and growing up I knew I was different and felt different from other children. I was teased alot because i walked with a limp and needed to wear leg braces to help me with my walking. I also wish i could have had someone like this amazing lil boy show me that its ok to be who I am. Although I did have a tough childhood I now am a strong independent women who will not take no for an answer and i try to live my life the best way I can
I just wanted to say, I record your show everyday and watch it at night before I go to bed. I always have a good cry from every show. Then I fall asleep with good thoughts in my head. Thank you for your totally different kind of talk show. I just love you!
Geez they should’ve warned us... impossible to watch without getting choked up. Colton is such a beautiful soul!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have Spina Bifida too!! It amazes me seeing all of these SB kids & adults included in more ads! A few months ago I saw a girl (who I’m only guessing has Spina Bifida)‘s picture outside of an Ulta store & I couldn’t help but be stunned & emotion when I first saw it!

I think Kelly is possibly the most loveliest person on tv ever ❤️ she’s just unapologetically herself 🙏🏻 so authentic so real, just so LOVELY 😊 x x
I've watched this so many times and cry every time I see Colton cry watching the little boy.
And theyre all right on people with disabilities still not normal, why are we all put under different categories that makes people who are ignorate feel better.
Colton didn't cry. Oliver did. And no they are not right. You're just weird

I love those two kids because I am disabled also and I want to show and tell everybody that it’s hard to feel like that you are needed.
A baby holding your finger is an all time great feeling.
Both little boys got me crying. Such beautiful hearts.
i'm 22 and seeing colton and other people in wheelchairs in ads makes me proud as a wheelchair user. it also really helps us choose clothes! cos clothes look different when you're sitting surrounded by a metal chair frame. lol. you gotta make sure it doesn't get stuck in your wheels or in the axels, that it doesn't bunch up and look weird. we deserve good fashion too!
Thank you Kelly. You are an inspiration for inclusivity. Keep going. We need more presenters like you.
as an adult with CP and uses a motorized wheelchair I want to say you rock Colton and Thank You.
So sweet and special...what the world needs more than ever!!!
I love Kelly's attitude towards all this. I too am wheelchair user and I see so many that praise us as superhumans... She is so natural, we are all equal after all.

This made me cry as well. Thank you for this beautiful, story of inspiration!
Beautiful program. I'm crying.
Love this segment! I want to point out to you, Kelly, that Colton is not "wheelchair bound" as you said at the .15 mark. He uses a wheelchair for access! His mother sat him on her lap. He's not "bound," by any measure. We need to be mindful of how we say things. Thanks for adding the #captions, by the way!
Larry Littleton I’m permanently in a wheelchair, but can be moved into other “chairs,” I consider myself to be wheelchair bound, it’s not a “bad” term. At least not IMO, I’m sorry you feel this way, I’m not sure if you are, or have someone you know in a wheelchair, but for me, being in a wheelchair, I don’t feel offended if someone says I’m wheelchair bound. I know she doesn’t mean that this kid is in his chair 100% of the time. Nobody who is in a chair is. 😊 I hope I said this the right way, I have TBI & can often come across the wrong way, please note that I truly mean no disrespect, I’m just stating my opinion! Just as I value yours!
@@kariking8752 When referring to people who use wheelchairs, avoid terms such as "wheelchair bound" or "confined to a wheelchair." Wheelchairs do not confine people with disabilities. The terms “confined to a wheelchair” and “wheelchair bound” are judgements by people without disabilities about how it would be to live life in a wheelchair. For those who do not rely on wheelchairs, they may see life in a wheelchair as limiting, confining and restricting. I'm pretty sure you don't sleep in your wheelchair, so the word, "bound" is not one to use. I'm more sorry you feel bound to your chair. Yes, I've used wheelchairs in the past, fortunately, only for 6 months at a time.
@@kariking8752 www.newmobility.com/2015/09/dont-say-wheelchair-bound/
I respect your opinion but stand on my beliefs! ❤️
@@larrylittleton8702 let me get this straight... you've only spent 6 months in a wheelchair & you're going to tell someone who actually spends the majority of their time tooling around in one, how she should refer to herself? And then you link in a 2015 "article" (read; someone else's views on the topic), come on...
I have spina bifida and I would have loved to see that when I was a kid instead of seeing it on the donation cups as some kind of sob story.
