Actually, the original pickups don't split as usual - the 2nd switch position wires the neck humbucker in parallel, and the 4th switch position splits the inside coils and puts them in series. Thus, all five positions are fully hum-cancelling. I can understand why someone would prefer true splits, but it's a really ingenious and cool wiring scheme by Ibanez.
Yes and no... On one hand it makes sense but on the other when somebody buys a guitar he should be getting a functioning instrument and if everything besides body and neck sucks it will sound terrible not stay in tune have cracling electronics and dodgy fretwork so high action and play like ass. Who would want to take a guitar like that home after trying in out at the store? Also at that point why not spend more and get a working instrument instead of buying body and neck and paying premium for crappy parts that you will throw out anyway. I can get on boat with an idea to sell body+neck and electronics separately though for those who want to go that route
@@ilmisxx2 This instrument looks fully playable. And it can be upgraded easily because they cheap out on parts like good electronics, which is what the original commenter was trying to make an example of.
Divided by Zero It almost doesn’t even sound like legato, because each note is so defined. If you didn’t know better, you might think you were hearing the pick.
I just got this guitar a couple weeks ago. Man, My mind is blown how incredibly well made this thing is. It's my favorite ibanez that I've ever owned. I've owned close to a dozen of them. All different price ranges high end and low budget. If you're thinking about getting this axe just get it. You will not be disappointed.
Love Ibanez, never disappointed.Incredible looking guitar. Auction will be out of my price range sure your going to raise a big chunk of cash. Both of my dogs are rescue animals.
Pros used to make fun of them as "beginner" axes (other than Vai 's of course) because of the super thin "toothpick" necks and high output pickups. Lately, and since my buddy Josh Smith had Ibanez make him a signature Tele style, I among other pros are looking at them differently .
This is one of my favorite videos. The clarity after the mods was undeniable. I had to rewatch it because I was sure it sounded great before but blown away by the difference on the second go around. I have an Ibanez and always thought the stock pick ups suited my taste just fine but now can see there is room for improvement. Nice job and throw us a bone and find a link for those knobs please.
You know...I recently sharped my axe..twas a 2004 Squier Bullet...thought long and hard on what to upgrade on it and went for it...bought a new Fender Player Series HSS Strat..sharpening done...that's about my limit for guitar tech...lol Phillip, love the series man, from the first to this, nice to see what can be done for upgrades.
My friend has one of these. I was in the last rehearsal before the concert later that day. It was a Jazz concert and I was using a Japanese Jackson which was lovely but it developed a serious wiring issue in that final rehearsal. I rushed back and my friend gave me this to use. It was in Drop C and was strung with 11s. I play 9s but I had no problem with the strings because the neck was comfortable. It also had no problems with going from Drop C to standard. I was amazed. It was also very light which is a lifesaver for a 2 ½ hour concert. The tone was great and I cannot recommend this enough.
Although, if it was a choice between this or a 2000s Japanese Jackson, the Jackson would win. I am slightly biased because I love Jacksons and the ones in question are the best guitars ever made on this planet. But I was impressed with the Ibanez.
Paper in oil capacitors are more thermally sensitive, and new ones don't offer any difference over a high-tolerance polyester or polyurethane capacitor. Yes some of the ones in old guitars sound great because they've degraded, losing capacitance from the original value. Try slightly smaller valued capacitors.
I've never found great players to complain about the instrument they're playing. Only about their inability to coax a certain sound from it. They always take responsibility for the tone and playability
For all the master Craftsman out there that think you need to use the file in Just One Direction. A saw for cutting wood only Cuts in One Direction as well but you don't lift the saw out of the groove either. You drag the saw back and forth to get a rhythm going even though the saw is only cutting on the downstroke.
Love those knobs. I love and use the dome knobs but always wanted numbers on them. Rest of upgrading was stellar. I always upgrade the electronics much the way you did in my guitars (except my Gibson LP Studio as they built it the way I wanted it). Great vid
Bought this guitar on clearance for 300. Upgraded the pickups to a Pegasus in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck. It sounds great, very clear and clean for fusion and clean chord playing. It was much darker with the stock pickups. Great guitar.
I devote a lot of love and money to taking care of a feral cat colony. I applaud your idea. This is really a decent thing to do. God bless. Love yer videos. JUst watched the Fender Master guy check out 3 strats. Interesting BTW I have been playing since the 60s. My playing doesnt show it. But I am intrigued with the C and F on last two strings. Does this tuning have a name? Is there a chord chart for this. My compliments to your Luthier. What a guy! I learned so much.
I used to have an s series custom that I picked up from some dude who got it traded to him for some herbs and spices or something and he didn't nobody had so I think I paid like $100 it was a $2,000 guitar the nicest guitar I've ever played in my life
Phil I have a Ibanez RG421AHM a $400 dollar marked down from $700 and it could use a Sharpen My Axe treatment !! I would do it myself but I am Handicapped and lack the resources to do it myself . How do I put my name in the Hat for SMA chance to be picked ???
So the $400.00 dollar guitar plus mod parts, plus 3 hrs actual bench time . How was the honest cost ? to the average USA consumer? Is it possible to get a similar priced product? for same money? great video
I still have my first act from when I was a kid lmaooo it’s all beat up. As a joke I want to mod it with nice hardware and throw a beefy humbucker in there so I can have a sleeper guitar lmao i’d love to hand it to someone and have em laugh just and watch their face change as they actually play it lol I’ve had the thing for like 18 years or something but there’s too much nostalgia for me to just get rid of it, so I want to repurpose it for shits and giggles.
Why do some guitarists play so fast? The answer is....Because they can. I prefer more feeling than speed. Not that this guy can't put feeling into his playing. I'm prejudiced I guess because I also prefer clean. I agree with you. He could make a broom stick sound fantastic, if it had strings on it.
This is so awesome, I love videos like this, would absolutely love to see you do a video like this but upgrade a Fender Mustang or even a Bullet Mustang
Very cool. Great choices for the mods and so nice to watch a great player. Super guitar especially at that price. Even considering mods still priced right and top notch.
Very interesting. My preference bout polished frets is to Not have them as over polished so that I still got the sensation of easy doing vibrato. The less they are polished the easier to get vibrato tones. Not tooo coarse but Just right amount of less polish and Im happy. Thanks for sharing these infos. Well wishings o
Yes a diamond file can go both ways. Saying it can't is like saying sandpaper only works in 1 direction. And with rasp files it wouldn't hurt the frets going both ways but it's not good for the file.
In case nobody has answered it, the knobs appear to be from Luminlay, Model MA19. It's odd that I don't see them on their website, but you can easily find them on eBay.
It's too easy for some people to hit the like/dislike without thinking. The RGRT has been on my wishlist for sometime now and when I get it I probably will not change anything (especially not lowering the output of the pick-ups!) but that doesn't mean I dislike the video. Phil makes great, informative videos (I've just subscribed though I think that asking for a monthly member's fee is a bit cheeky).
8:04 could you please tell me which parts you bought? (No link in the description) What electronics components did you buy from mojoTon? (you only have a link to a capacitor) Thanks!
Great video!! I´ve dne this with my Washburn RX50 and I would never get rid of that thing. Came stock with Graphtech Nut, SetNeck and StringThru on the bridge. I´ve added Dimarzio pots, GFS pickups, RollerBridge, GroverTuners, Killswitch, "DIY BlackIceMod" and peeled the paint in the back... I´d always rather buy a good mid range and mod it than a top tier one... Wouldn´t mind a Mayones Setius tho...
I just bought an Ibanez neck through with DiMarcio pickups but I’m a big animal lover myself. My dogs are my best friends and stuff like this makes me love Ibanez more.
I think I'd call it "Personalize" instead of customize. I've been looking into putting Stainless frets into a couple necks (one being an old Ibanez)...it's just a matter of budgeting the time and money. I'm also thinking I might want to do a run on my cheap Rogue ST-3 to go through the process, first. It's nice to know the high polish route can give me the feel for now, though. Those knobs though...
Great video Phil, Tom's a beast on guitar, unbelievable! Not usually a big fan of the thin Ibanez necks but I might try and check one of these out some day.
Can we get a top tier guitar with a compound radius neck and fretboard, heavily contoured body (think PRS/Solar/Chapman), luminescent inlays, 24 stainless steel frets, ratio tuners, string trough brass TOM bridge with graphite saddles (unless you fancy a Floyd Rose or Evertune) and graphite nut? Preferably with a AAA flame maple neck and cap, chambered mahogany body and Ebony fingerboard. That would be a dream to play!
Had this exact model for a while, new pups and setup and it was an absolutely killer live rock and metal guitar! BUT, to correct you on one point Philip, starting 2019, the body wings are no longer mahogany on these but Nyatoh (and the neck-through is maple/walnut). So either this was an older production model, or the Ibanez guy wasn't up to speed.

Yeah I'm watching it again , I like this guitar... I have the Ibanez RGDT621 which is alot like this guitar but with better pickups ( DiMarzio ) and a popular burl top in blue lagoon burst which is a neck through also. Yeah it's just like this but came already upgraded although I love this dark brown look and I usually don't like the wood or natural look I guess but that one I really like especially with all the upgrades they've added too lol... the blue popular burl is a very modern look and is very popular now though but that look is timeless. I was thinking that is called the rgdt421 because its missing 2 upgrades my rgdt621 has lol but maybe it's just when it was made lol makes more since. Mine cost more though it was 650 bucks really great guitar it records really well and although I have more lofty or finger quotes better guitars I grab this one probably the most when I want a hardtail. When I want a floyd rose I grab my charvel pro San dimas in metallic deep purple and when I want a traditional trem I grab my American strat. Oh my Ibanez has their style of shark tooth inlays too not the regular dots like this one but the fretboard is still jatobe.... that one is 400 and mine was 650 which other than the pickups and the finish it's the same guitar so yeah what a great deal crazy deal a d I wish I had that one too lol

More companies should do that, spend the money on the parts you can't upgrade like the neck and body and put cheaper parts in places you can upgrade
100% agree

I have this exact guitar and was always interested in putting a 3 way switch and coil splitting the stock pickups.
Amazing guitar for $429
Just ordered my first Ibanez. Really looking forward to it, it's a nice cherry burst.
cherry burst ibanez??????
Just ordered my new AZ2204B...things so amazing so excited to get it.
It was awesome to be with you when you collected this after all the work. Been so excited to ree this video
I love how Tom plays the KYG theme when get the reworked guitar. Pretty cool. Great video
That was a "Great Bones" guitar to work with - and the mods were a nice customization to it!! ✌✌
I missed this series..glad its back! (& I have a rescue Mutt & cat)
The real reason for the frame drops is because Tom is just playing so fast, the camera can’t keep up!

Tom is like Nick Johnston. I could listen to just them play. No other instruments.. Just them and their guitar
Tom is friggin outstanding.
Think I have that without the reverse stock with pickups mounted to the wood(blue)RGAT62neck thru. Love the thing!

I think I want an Ibanez now! That is a beautiful guitar!! Great video.
I love Ibanez RGs so much, I own 3 of them, and might get a tattoo of one someday.
At first I thought my play speed was set at 1.5 or even 2.0. Then I realized that's just how fast Tom really plays!
Sweet! I just got an iron label baritone last week!
Those are the same knobs that are used on the Guthrie Govan Sig from Charvel. :)
