Would you fly by a Russian plane now?

In 1983, I flew from Helsinki to Leningrad to Kiev to Moscow to Odessa.
On one flight, I was sitting near the wing and could look out at the wing.
      OH MY GOD!
The wing looked as if it was built in someone's garage or back yard. The rivets on the wing were not even with the surface of the wing, and each rivet looked different.
That Russian (Soviet) Aeroflot plane scared me.
      Your flights were better!

Is that a Sukhoi Superjet or ...? Or "simply" a Russian operated (but not built) plane? In order to enter some airspaces, a plane from a doubtful country or airline may need a special airworthyness certificate - I have even seen, that sometimes specific airplanes from certain companies are banned from flying in certain regions. The winglets reminds me of an Airbus A320. The only time, I have been inside a Russian-built plane, was a Yak-40 in Warsaw. But it did not fly, it was only open for exhibition at their Army Museum.
Sanctions and flying - well, Iran is also still using some 40 years-old-something Boeing-planes. They were also the last one to use the B727 on regular routes. But most of such planes would never be allowed to fly here, with their doubtful maintenance. I guess, the same may happen to Russia in time.

It's only going to take one accident that was due to lack of maintenance or parts and countries like Turkey may ban the Russian planes from coming in. I'm sure there is a black market for parts from China, Egypt, some Asian countries, maybe even some ex-USSR countries. Could you have flown on a Turkish airline from Moscow to Turkey? I'm very disappointed in Turkey with their behavior (or lack of it).

I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, if Erdogan didn’t play ball with Putin at all, then Erdogan wouldn’t have the leverage he does over Putin. The Black Sea Grain Deal has been important for keeping 3rd world countries fed, and I’m not sure if it would have been possible without a mediator like Erdogan whom both sides are willing to speak to.
On the other hand, I draw the line at parts for weapons. It’s very frustrating to me that Russia is able to keep building missiles due to sanction evasions, even though the rate is slowed. I don’t care as much if Russian civilians manage to buy new iPhones, or go on business trips without crashing. (Actually when Ksenia is on the plane, I have a preference for it NOT crashing.)

To keep those planes flying will soon require black market (or untraceable) parts, which means they will not be allowed into other countries due to aircraft certification requirements. A Boeing 757 can get by without needing new parts for 3 to 5 years depending on the usage. But the landing gear and tires gets the most ware and tare and need changing sooner.

Unfortunately airplane safety or its lack thereof isn't restricted to any one country. Nowadays the standards for almost everything has significantly decreased across the board. The acceptable level of performance now would have gotten you fired 30-40 years ago.

Aeroflot is the best I ever flew. The flight attendants are so pretty and diligent. I was sleeping on 4 empty seats and no one bothered me. This is impossible on arrogant united airline

I'm pretty sure they take safety just as serious as elsewhere. Crashes are not good advertising for any airline. Btw, fact is that all those ridiculous sanctions hurt people in the EU more than in Russia.

Since you said it was a Russian aircraft (not a Boeing or Airbus) I’m assuming it’s a Sukhoi Superjet and I believe you’re fine to fly on those. I remember taking an Airbus (operated by British Airways) from Heathrow to Bucharest and honestly that thing looked like it was made in the 60s and never upgraded, it was the only time I was scared on a flight since it looked like we were about to lose the hull during takeoff and landing😂.
I’d be scared on a Chinese aircraft but Russian made things are built to withstand anything even if they’re not as high tech. And Aeroflot pilots are good, after all Russia has some very unhospitable regions (weather-wise) and they manage.

Bot. Sukhois do need spare parts from the West just like Airbus and Boeings do. It's not even close 100% Russian parts plane.

@@jopetti I think they still get them, just via intermediaries. Sanctions are ineffective and hurt more the countries and companies that try to sanction Russia. Some of these companies found “creative” ways to circumvent sanctions of course, who would want to lose a market like Russia and go bankrupt.

@@minime7375 if a company supplying airplane parts would go bankrupt from just not supplying Russia it must have been a tiny company. Russia has 1,7% of the world population and it's economic value in the airplane market is probably less than 1% because of its limited Purchasing Power. This is why it was so easy for many Western companies to close in Russia as its presence didn't amount to a lot of turnover anyway. With that being said it is clear by now that spare parts are making it to Russia because otherwise we'd have seen accidents with planes already.

@@squarebelgium most of the companies you’re thinking of found ways around the sanctions, including “selling” their Russian assests on the condition they can purchase them back when the sanctions are lifted (like Coca Cola). How can you think that Russia is not an important market lol. I mean Russia has like 150 million people, compare that with allthe Eastern flank of NATO. Do you think Bulgaria has more purchase power for example? Or Hungary? Naaah.

If you fly from Moscow to Beijing then announcement in Russian and Chinese, make sense. Now that you fly from Moscow to Ankara, Russian and Turkish make sense. Frankly just about no body speak English in Russia, same goes for Türkiye nobody speak English absolutely nobody. I-know that cause I have been there many time. I think the best is where you flying to or from that’s the language is important.
