It is my understanding that the band name was intended to be a slang word for money. There are 4 guys but David Gates, the man seen here, was the hit maker of the group. He had a way with lyrics and melody that carried them through several years of hits. The band went their separate ways. After David did a few more songs for movies and the like, he walked away from the music business.
His financial success in music enabled him to achieve his dream of being a cattle rancher. After many years of that life, he and his wife [since 1969] retired in Washington State.
