I did teach myself to read and write and at the age of 45, I achieved my lifetime dream of completing a bachelor's honors degree in contemporary art practice which I got a first-class honors degree. What I did was something crazy on my first art sale: I made up a number and to my surprise the buyer bought it at that price. The price- $1400. It was some random thing on Facebook. I didn’t even list it on Marketplace. Just posting in progress shots. Now one of the frustrating things I see locally is artists frequently low balling their art. Like so low they barely make back supplies used. My advice to artists is don’t do that. Also avoid selling in galleries that take more than 30% commission. They’re increasingly becoming unnecessary in the new century as people are getting more comfortable buying online direct from the artist.
I lowballed my art when I started too, and this year my mom sold a cake and I saw her lowball herself, and it just hurt lol, but I'm glad that videos like this exist and we have proof of artists making a living for themselves without a gallery backing them!!!
If it's a one time, sporadic sale and not a consistent monthly revenue, then you surely cannot live off it. Galleries are the only way to 'institutionalize' your art and turn your art from low priced commodity to investment pieces.

Yes be the Niche, but take it a step further. Your niche is your brand and it is what you are good at. Your groove is your niche. I am an artist though so I take it even further and know that my niche is my brand and when I die my art gets much more value because it is my BRAND. Your niche is something you are good at. Find that groove-that niche-your brand!
All you need is trust your talent. If it is liked, someone will buy it. Forget about critics and galleries who push some for their own account and greed. Art remains a gift. Share it profoundly.
At 70 years young, I took up painting. My passion is photography but due to chronic back issues and pain, I cannot carry my digital SLR and of course the heavy lenses. I now use my iPhone 14 Pro to take photos. When I am in a painting class, the most wonderful and odd thing happens, I forget about the pain. I am not kidding about this, for me it is like taking a mini break from pain. I cannot sit or stand too long so I do both while I paint. I am improving on my art skills and finally decided on painting with oil because is more forgiving. Also, the bigger the canvas, the longer the strokes and that is easier and satisfying for me. At 10:40 I never looked at it as me- my art. I've always kept my personal life in private, but you've made me realize that it's good to show a little bit of me so that it can be related to my art. It makes a lot of sense!

I think you're absolutely right, but I'm in a situation where I don't think adding myself to my art pics is gonna help whatsoever, lol. It'll do the opposite. I'm now in my early 60s, so it's a a bit different than if I were in my 20s...but for the younger crowd, go for it

I recently found your channel and must say I agree with your opinions and ideas moreso than any other artist I have known. I'm a full-time caretaker for my wife who suffered a severe stroke and heart attack 10 years ago and I'm in no way blaming her, nor my position for refraining from creating art. Sometimes life has different paths it wants us to take. I simply wanted to tell you I find both your art and your character wicked beautiful. Congratulations on your new studio. I can't wait to see what you do with all that room. I just bought a new house with a perfect basement for a studio and after watching your video, your energy instilled within me a need in getting back to my love of art. Thank you.
The only reason your painting sold for less than $12k is because of your self belief. Please grow your self belief into your artistic skill level. Applying the rhetoric of art value to others (whose art you value) in a positive light, and in a negative light to yourself is not the thing to do. In selling your painting cheep, like you did ($1,200.), you not only make your life financially more difficult, but you risk lowering the public’s perception of the value of art, which makes things harder for other artists as well. You’re good, now be professional enough to believe it, and be properly compensated. PS. Thanks for being brave enough to put yourself out there with a RUclips channel. I am recently retired and just getting started creating visual art but I have been beading as a hobby for years using antique and vintage beads I repurpose from old jewelry and other items. I found your video because I am going to start selling earrings I previously only gave as gifts to family and friends, so I and need to figure out how to price them. Congratulations on finding your market by increasing your prices! Refining and defining exactly unique point of view is so key to that process! I also love to recommend that folks increase their knowledge about art terms and where they locate themselves in the larger art world!
Before traveling always always empty everything out of all your suitcases, purses, makeup bags, etc. you plan to take. Make sure you don't have anything questionable in there before you pack. I learned this a while back and it has saved me a number of times.

The funny thing is, I saw a video clip of the high-end portrait artist you mentioned, doing a class. Every single student had painted an exact clone. Using obviously the same method and palette. So, I don't think scarcity of a style is valuable. Art is storytelling. Social schmoozing isn't my thing but people do tell me that I am authentic (which is a huge compliment as one of my core values). I typed that comment before you said authenticity & story & processing trauma (so I think those are keys behind why I do art). The Mexican story was hilarious.
Great video! Your advice about the value of the artist is spot on. Last week I had a booth at an art and craft fair, it's the first year I do this. And I noticed that people would come back at my booth and I really felt that they were willing to buy a piece of my art because they ... liked me I guess? We had a click. It happened several times. So I definitely agree, the identity and relation of the artist is very important.
I just got back into doing some art, mainly as therapy and i spose thats what i was doing as a child too. I am posting it now, mainly for myself as encouragement to keep going but there is a bit of me that would love to make money from it, a bit of validation 🥺 thanks for the advice. Ha I just started painting 18 months ago and I am almost old as Grandma Moses! No one wants to see that! LOL I love the work itself, that's why I get attracted to an artist-the work itself.
I struggle with just getting it all out there. I’ve created so many random things digitally. Also on canvas. I’m back to square one at the moment. I hadn’t been consistent enough to justify a monthly website fee. Realizing just now there are subscriptions I can cancel that would pay for it. I get overwhelmed by the online stuff sometimes, formatting it all, having a the website flow. I want to make it easy for the consumer to purchase. I finally started sharing g what was for sale and sold one of them last week for $40. lol it was a 12x12 wood board. Some of my friends said…you should have charged more. I think I just need to share more of me like you were saying for sure. Here’s to experimenting! I appreciate your videos.
I have ALWAYS been an artist. As a child, ages five and seven my mom would fill the walls with my drawings and paintings! She supported me as an artist and that wonderful support made me into the artist that I am today! ~

Thanks, I will definitely use some of your suggestions when I get around to creating/updating my website and online presence. I just started painting in January of 2023. I took a Bob Ross paint class for a week. Watching him paint on TV for years, I thought I could do that, and I can. I'm a carpenter by trade but have always been interested in art and thought about it when I was younger in school (50 yrs ago) Now I'm tormenting myself with a mixture of BR-style painting and some online teachers who paint differently. It all comes down to where you started first. It's like do you use a Mac or PC. I'm also too much of a sponge I absorb everything and try too many things simultaneously LOL. Both good and bad. Plus there's the I don't have the time to focus right now with day to day life stuff and here I am ranting. So thanks for the suggestions. My niche will be to create original paintings with custom picture frames in my woodshop.
I price all my art based upon square inches. $1200 for a 24x36 painting is 1.38 per square inch. If you base your prices on square inch then all your artwork regardless of size sells for the 1.38 per square inch. A 9 x 10 would be going for $125 (124.2). I only sold a few pieces though.
@disc999golfer999 Pricing by square inches works if your pieces are similarly sized. For a wide size range, smaller works end up disproportionately cheaper compared to larger ones. Pricing by perimeter multiplied by a factor gives more consistent pricing.
Great tips! I feel that tgjs also applies to authors, although I was never able to put it so eloquently before. There’s a really good book by Simon Sinek, called “Start With Why”, which is similar to the reason you explained, of people getting to know YOU as an artist, what inspires you, what you’ve experienced/overcome and why you paint/create what you do. I know you are right (about how people follow artists not necessarily art). It is easy for me to put my art out there but not so easy for me to put myself out there. I really don't like myself on camera. I never wanted to be famous, just make a good living from art. But I guess they go hand in hand. I need to work on getting comfortable in front of the camera. It's much like those free little libraries, where you take a book and leave a book. You're gifting people a piece of your beautiful art and they may one day turn out to be customers, who knows? Also join as many art fairs as you can. I personally love and prefer the local, once a month, or once a week markets over the yearly expensive fairs. And join or start an art group where you can help each other set up at art fairs.

Seems like you’re really putting yourself in a vulnerable state in front of a faceless audience (if we’re talking about the internet). I would advise to be a little selective in what you’re sharing.
I refused my grandfather's WWII shell casing from his funeral. I let my niece take it instead. Only because a homicide/suicide changed my family tree when I was 2. My maternal grandparents had to raise me & my siblings. I refuse to carry any guns but I'm not about taking away people's hunting guns etc. I have good memories of my grandfather who was there in WWII & saw the concentration camps. He said there should never be that much hate no matter what. He was a very good soul. I once almost had my pillow pet confiscated while traveling from Mexico.
Tbh I don't want to sell my art for crazy amount of money because I want it to be accessible to everyone who enjoys it. I'm also 41 and my looks are declining. So no one wants to see me put myself out there on Instagram or RUclips. And I don't want to put myself out there just to be judged and ridiculed. I want my art to speak for itself. I also have a great collection of art because I loved the paintings, not because they were popular or personable, etc. And my most expensive piece that I purchased from a sweet, older man's studio in Santa Fe was only $700. I don't see myself buying art for a thousand dollars or more. Your game is only relevant in a wealthy, young, shallow people's market or those who need convincing because they're new to buying art. But then again people like that also buy prints from hobby lobby. I still like your art and vlogs though. And I will subscribe if you don't mind.
No offense intended, but you should literally be charging 10 times the amount you're asking for the painting you showed. I sell works by admittedly well-known artists in the $70,000 range, and their work is technically no better than yours; you also have a unique compositional style. That aside, you're advice is creditable and well presented.
If I wasn't allowed to sell it for a profit after I bought it, I wouldn't pay $80 for the Mona Lisa, let alone hundreds of millions. I have no idea why that painting is so valuable. Then again, art is subjective. I personally believe most admirers of certain artwork buy it for status and/ or investment other than a true appreciation of the piece. It also shouldn't matter who painted what. I don't understand how starstruck human beings can get over other human beings. Oh wow, that one artist she is talking about has 700k followers on Instagram. So? Kim Kardashian is rich for being talented as being a whore. Only if you like a piece of artwork, is that piece justified. Doesn't matter who painted it, how many they've sold, how many internet followers they have or anything else about them. That means you are choosing identity politics over the expression of actual art and the feelings you have when perceiving it. But then again, if you can sell your art for more because people are willing to pay for it, I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day. Just my opinions on things, peace to all and keep making art... it truly is what keeps this world going.😊
I think just embracing being an introvert would make you really refreshing and relatable to other introverts! People are always seeking similar personalities and gravitating towards people who feel comfortable. I’m sure there are people who will gravitate towards just your demeanor alone! I’ve been getting yelled at for lowballing myself for decades. So now with a new body of work I’m pricing it accordingly.
For me it's not about low balling. It's about making art accessible to most. Everyone deserves to be able to buy the art they love.

Congratulations on finding your market by increasing your prices! Refining and defining exactly unique point of view is so key to that process! I also love to recommend that folks increase their knowledge about art terms and where they locate themselves in the larger art world!
This is such a good video. You really touched on the two keys points that other videos don't even mention, I love it.
Before traveling always always empty everything out of all your suitcases, purses, makeup bags, etc. you plan to take. Make sure you don't have anything questionable in there before you pack. I learned this a while back and it has saved me a number of times.

The funny thing is, I saw a video clip of the high-end portrait artist you mentioned, doing a class. Every single student had painted an exact clone. Using obviously the same method and palette. So, I don't think scarcity of a style is valuable.
Art is storytelling.
Social schmoozing isn't my thing but people do tell me that I am authentic (which is a huge compliment as one of my core values). I typed that comment before you said authenticity & story & processing trauma (so I think those are keys behind why I do art).

Great video! Your advice about the value of the artist is spot on. Last week I had a booth at an art and craft fair, it's the first year I do this. And I noticed that people would come back at my booth and I really felt that they were willing to buy a piece of my art because they ... liked me I guess? We had a click. It happened several times. So I definitely agree, the identity and relation of the artist is very important.

I struggle with just getting it all out there. I’ve created so many random things digitally. Also on canvas. I’m back to square one at the moment. I hadn’t been consistent enough to justify a monthly website fee. Realizing just now there are subscriptions I can cancel that would pay for it. I get overwhelmed by the online stuff sometimes, formatting it all, having a the website flow. I want to make it easy for the consumer to purchase. I finally started sharing g what was for sale and sold one of them last week for $40. lol it was a 12x12 wood board. Some of my friends said…you should have charged more. I think I just need to share more of me like you were saying for sure. Here’s to experimenting! I appreciate your videos.

How did you learn to do reflections & distortions of water like that? It reminds me of doing the art of chrome & the reflections of that as well. That stuff is really hard for me to do! Thanks, I will definitely use some of your suggestions when I get around to creating/updating my website and online presence. I just started painting in January of 2023. I took a Bob Ross paint class for a week. Watching him paint on TV for years, I thought I could do that, and I can. I'm a carpenter by trade but have always been interested in art and thought about it when I was younger in school (50 yrs ago) Now I'm tormenting myself with a mixture of BR-style painting and some online teachers who paint differently. It all comes down to where you started first. It's like do you use a Mac or PC. I'm also too much of a sponge I absorb everything and try too many things simultaneously LOL. Both good and bad. Plus there's the I don't have the time to focus right now with day to day life stuff and here I am ranting. So thanks for the suggestions. My niche will be to create original paintings with custom picture frames in my woodshop.
I price all my art based upon square inches. $1200 for a 24x36 painting is 1.38 per square inch. If you base your prices on square inch then all your artwork regardless of size sells for the 1.38 per square inch. A 9 x 10 would be going for $125 (124.2). I only sold a few pieces though.
@disc999golfer999 Pricing by square inches works if your pieces are similarly sized. For a wide size range, smaller works end up disproportionately cheaper compared to larger ones. Pricing by perimeter multiplied by a factor gives more consistent pricing.

There’s a really good book by Simon Sinek, called “Start With Why”, which is similar to the reason you explained, of people getting to know YOU as an artist, what inspires you, what you’ve experienced/overcome and why you paint/create what you do.

I know you are right (about how people follow artists not necessarily art). It is easy for me to put my art out there but not so easy for me to put myself out there. I really don't like myself on camera. I never wanted to be famous, just make a good living from art. But I guess they go hand in hand. I need to work on getting comfortable in front of the camera. @@LisaSchulanerFineArt Also I'm thinking of painting tiny paintings with my info on the back of the canvases and leaving them inside those free little art galleries in neighborhoods. It's much like those free little libraries, where you take a book and leave a book. You're gifting people a piece of your beautiful art and they may one day turn out to be customers, who knows? Also join as many art fairs as you can. I personally love and prefer the local, once a month, or once a week markets over the yearly expensive fairs. And join or start an art group where you can help each other set up at art fairs.

I refused my grandfather's WWII shell casing from his funeral. I let my niece take it instead. Only because a homicide/suicide changed my family tree when I was 2. My maternal grandparents had to raise me & my siblings. I refuse to carry any guns but I'm not about taking away people's hunting guns etc. I have good memories of my grandfather who was there in WWII & saw the concentration camps. He said there should never be that much hate no matter what. He was a very good soul.
I once almost had my pillow pet confiscated while traveling from Mexico.

Tbh I don't want to sell my art for crazy amount of money because I want it to be accessible to everyone who enjoys it. I'm also 41 and my looks are declining. So no one wants to see me put myself out there on Instagram or RUclips. And I don't want to put myself out there just to be judged and ridiculed. I want my art to speak for itself. I also have a great collection of art because I loved the paintings, not because they were popular or personable, etc. And my most expensive piece that I purchased from a sweet, older man's studio in Santa Fe was only $700. I don't see myself buying art for a thousand dollars or more. Your game is only relevant in a wealthy, young, shallow people's market or those who need convincing because they're new to buying art. But then again people like that also buy prints from hobby lobby. I still like your art and vlogs though. And I will subscribe if you don't mind.

No offense intended, but you should literally be charging 10 times the amount you're asking for the painting you showed. I sell works by admittedly well-known artists in the $70,000 range, and their work is technically no better than yours; you also have a unique compositional style. That aside, you're advice is creditable and well presented.
If I wasn't allowed to sell it for a profit after I bought it, I wouldn't pay $80 for the Mona Lisa, let alone hundreds of millions. I have no idea why that painting is so valuable. Then again, art is subjective. I personally believe most admirers of certain artwork buy it for status and/ or investment other than a true appreciation of the piece. It also shouldn't matter who painted what. I don't understand how starstruck human beings can get over other human beings. Oh wow, that one artist she is talking about has 700k followers on Instagram. So? Kim Kardashian is rich for being talented as being a whore. Only if you like a piece of artwork, is that piece justified. Doesn't matter who painted it, how many they've sold, how many internet followers they have or anything else about them. That means you are choosing identity politics over the expression of actual art and the feelings you have when perceiving it. But then again, if you can sell your art for more because people are willing to pay for it, I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day. Just my opinions on things, peace to all and keep making art... it truly is what keeps this world going.😊

I think just embracing being an introvert would make you really refreshing and relatable to other introverts! People are always seeking similar personalities and gravitating towards people who feel comfortable. I’m sure there are people who will gravitate towards just your demeanor alone!
