Overcoats have traditionally been longer for urban gents walking to and from busses and subways. A “car coat” is couple of inches above the knee to make getting in and out of automobiles easier. When a man has his own auto to drive, he is in the cold for a shorter length of time as well. If you regularly have to walk outside, or use public transportation, opt for the longer length.
An important video, Jeff, especially for those of us that live in the northern US and other cold climates. I live in Minnesota. About a week ago it was colder in Minnesota than in the Antarctic. I tend to buy charcoal and blue outerwear. Those colors go with most of my other clothes. Keep up the great content.
Great video Jeff! I believe in having multiple overcoats with different lengths for different situations. My camel one is the shortest since I wear it with more casual clothing most times. My charcoal one and my brown one are a bit longer and I find myself wearing them the most. My navy one is knee length and I wear that one for business. My black one is knee length, double breasted and I wear that to formal events. Fit was definitely the first priority for all of them!

i recently spent $100 on a superdry bridge coat. it fits fantastically everywhere except around my biceps. needless to say i was heated, so yeah i will echo "try it on in store first" like i'm an amazonian cave

I like the slimness of the tighter one, but the looser one is a tad more comfortable. Based on your video I think im gonna go with the looser one as during colder weather I can thicker clothes underneath.

What are you looking for in a coat? I'd say notch lapels can be a little more modern and a little less formal. The peak lapels are a little more old school but are more formal especially when double breasted.
That can be fine if you're in cold environments. Some old school overcoats would go even further past your knees to keep you warm. But you can also try a short cut. Look for sizes ending with "S" instead of "R" like "40S". If you do end up settling with a very long coat, IMO double breasted coats look better because they'll flap less at the bottom.

Overcoat looks look terrible when they are too tight IMO, just like the guy in the video. You shouldnt see creases when you button it up. Overcoats are not supposed to fit like blazers.
I'm 5'6 went to Nordstrom and tried several overcoats and even had a custom tailor help me. Unfortunately, for shorter guys some overcoats for tall guys don't work for us especially if your wide and muscular up top like me, I can fit a large-X large chest wise but I actually need a small length. I think I can get a medium and custom the length and sleeve length. But I would recommend going Nordstrom or indochino stores and have a tailor help. My plan is to buy only high quality coats as for when I die people will fight over it haha
Overcoats can (and perhaps should) be tailored. However make sure that you get the shoulder fit right. This is almost impossible to adjust. The length can be adjusted relatively easily. But it's something that you'll have to factor in to the overall cost. Also maybe you'll have to accept that overcoat style is not for you. We are all different. Some styles are effortless and some are difficult to pull off.
I just bought an overcoat in camel from J.Crew Factory. It looks great on me BUT it feels restrictive, particularly when raise my arms (similar to a position I’d be in when driving). The elbows and upper back seem to be the points of highest tension. Again, the fit of the coat looks great with our without a suit under it but it doesn’t feel so great. Maybe the arms are cut too low? Thoughts? I appreciate your videos.

I don't have a lapel preference Blaine. I've usually found them to be pretty uniform
