Hello Anupama - I am not sure if you will read my comment but I write here today just because I heard Rajeev saying how you get trolled most of the times. But seldom closet viewers like me don't write back to you all but we remember and we wait for your reviews. 99% times your review works for me other than something like befikre. I am really happy and thank you for doing this video as I like Rajeev too and people who are always taking interviews is good to be seen interviewed and candid. I am just a viewer so I don't know about box office so a movie that stays with me is a movie that's good. Just like that you are a film reviewer whose feedback stays with me. Thanks for straining the movies for us. I love film companion and rajeev's channel. I have not read or watched any of rahul's reviews so can't comment. Ps: never say you are old. I am 36 and my thoughts match with yours so I guess after one crosses 30 we are all the same. Happy new year. Lots of love
Rajeev and Anupama, I am big admirer of your work. The netizens are hateful, yes . But there are many, and I mean, real many who love your work. I watch your reviews over and over. And thanks to the two of you , I have learnt the art of enjoying the experience of good movies. A heartfelt thanks for all that you both do.

Hey dumbo don't put Jagga Jasoos raaes mubarakan on the list they were well made films which did average business but should have done far better @@colddaniel4266
Talking about Imtiaz's films and forgetting to mention Tamasha really caught my attention. And while discussing underrated films of the year, Trapped and The Ghazi Attack could have been named. Hindi Medium is also one small film that did well. But overall, yes, very bad year for the movies. The lack of options was strongly felt.
Why are none of them talking about “The Ghazi attack” ? That was one of the well researched movie and had terrific performance by KK , Rana and others .
Any nationalistic film is way out of bollywood critic's league. Ghazi attack, Baby, Wednesday, Toilet, Holiday all this films showcase nationalist sentiments, so remove them from our list.
Rahul Ray it's a multilingual film, shot in both hindi and telugu. Dialogues of telugu actors are shot in both telugu and hindi whereas hindi speaking actors' voices were dubbed in telugu.
I'm surprised Qarib Qarib Single is not mentioned. Sometimes just a linear story with superlative dialogues, performances and story telling is exactly what makes ones day lighter. Irrfan does that with this movie, made me smile for the next few days, which is something i look forward to when I go to watch a movie.
It's a beautiful film with realistic story line ,wonderful actors , and accurate comedy timing by irfan khan , i think this one and Karwan are the gem of indian RomCom ❤

Okay , i have just scrolled through the "comments" here and seems like many are unaware of this guy RAHUL DESAI .Let me be a selfless PR . Earlier , I was reluctant about trying to read anybody beyond Rajeev and Anupama(like most of us here do) , but that was only the case till i discovered RAHUL DESAI . I have been religiously following him for months now , all i can say in all this time is that i found his expression of criticisim so endearing to read that it is an art in itself . His "loooong" reviews which i once thought a deterrant to read , now i long for longer ones . If his metaphors to allegories to analogies to mocking humour in his reviews is great fun to read , his objective understanding of both themes and technicalities is so much a learning affair . I would say his understanding of cinema has definitely shaped (or say trimmed) a bit of mine too . If Anupama and Rajeev are mainstream , he is like that indie movie which is yet to gain popular cognition . Sometimes I may not completely agree with his rating though(his standards are just so high) , sometimes i also feel he is reading too much between the lines . But then ,no critic can be on the same page as you. I would suggest , give him a shot , it's worth it and decide for yourself . Cheers !
Fayaz Vs Tintumon I can't appreciate a critic who is as high brow as he is. I, of course, know about him and read his reviews occassionally but they're far removed from the general tastes and standards of even the most intellectual Indian audience.
Television actors are mostly so much better than film actors. I know it’s surprising lol. I just hope those actors just choose better roles. Two people who are using their talent in the right way are Jennifer Winget and Harshad Chopra rght now. You should check Bepanah right now. It’s amazing!
Irfan sharukh ayushmann pankaj kapoor and many veteran actors are from tv background.. There is so much talent trapped in saas bahu dramas unfortunately
I think this is largely because of the masala genre, which has entirely disembowelled the mainstream off any substance. Mainstream romantic, feel good movies with core and some social statement made through well defined characters (like DDLJ, KKHH, Kal Ho Na Ho, KANK, Jab we met, Saathiya ) accompanied by good music are things of past.
Rahul Desai will have more viewers from now on !! So many including me hearing his name for the first time !!! Rajeev & Anupama are two best critics whom I watch regularly for feedback. But this Rahul ka naam toh suna hi nahii .

aryan tiwari echoing same sentiment as mine . Same lunch . Today evening I too watched actress round table and totally loved it me shared with all my friends on Whatsapp and FB and strongly recommended people to watch that
Rajeev n Anupama u both must host one roundtable or talkshow on - Indian cinema beyond Hindi film industry. It should be about regional films u watched this year n loved it.
I love how honest you guys were about the films. Especially for Anupama and Rajeev considering the relationship they have with the actors, directors, and producers. Thank You
It was satisfying to hear their discussion here. Took the words out of my mouth on most things. Especially agree with the sentiment that there needs to be a collective shunning of poor content and cater instead to the intelligence of Indian audiences, rather than taking financial advantage of their love of masala. There is a definite recognition of what new audiences want and the limitations of the current “system”. It was sad to hear it end on such a pathetic note, citing how they are embarrassed to even refer to themselves as critics. Is that what today’s empty content has boiled film experts down to? Mainstream Movies I liked in 2017: A Death in the Gunj, Ghazi Attack, Newton, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Phullu, Anaarkali of Aarah, Hindi Medium, Meri Pyaari Bindu, Trapped, Shaadi Mein Zarur Aana, Baahubali 2 (Others: Poorna, Sachin: a Billion Dreams, Qarib Qarib Single?) Side note: Wish there were more well-shot, modern Indian documentaries like “An Insignificant Man”. Looking forward to the documentary category growing in the future. So many amazing true Indian stories to tell..
Hi Anu , Thank you for this lovely discussion and I am on this with you that you are not a critic you are a reviewer . And I would also like to thank you for having a discussion with all the leading female playback singers , that was on my mind for a long time , great learning. And please when will you have Aishwarya Rai on your show , not in Cannes but here in Mumbai. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year , chinta mat karo agle saal filmien bemisaal . 😄😄
The only part I agreed with Anupama is that I too liked "Meri Pyaari Bindu" But why are they not talking about the rise of the regional cinema this year....
Please, do never hear the comments telling you to lower you level. I've learnt so much with you about movies and the art of making cinema, Anupama. I could never be grateful enough for it. That's probably one of the reasons why my love for Hindi cinema is always changing and getting new layers. You help me on seeing more than what the eyes can see at first :}
Newton, A Death in the Gunj, Kadvi Hawa, Trapped, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Meri Pyaari Bindu and Haraamkhor are probably the best films of the year. Kadvi Hawa was probably the most underrated but gut wrenching and A Death in the Gunj was the most beautiful piece of filmmaking. Meri Pyaari Bindu was severely misunderstood and was a poignant look at the power of nostalgia and Newton of course was just brilliantly written, sharp biting satire.
Is it only me but I find Rahul Desai here looking quite a lot similiar to Malayalam actor Kunchako Babban... :) He sounds quite the same as him in all his movies..He's a fine actor by the way..
Please also do a discussion on International Movies this year. I would love to hear your thoughts on that one and you will also get plenty of good movies to chose from.
ssaakshi sharma Atleast he is someone who always tries to do something new. He is never scared of failure. The best amongst the current generation with so called actors varun and arjun. I became his fan after watching rocket singh.
Every viewer who watches a movie is a critic in his own head.... But I would like to know what is the qualification to become a film critic like anupama Rajeev etc., what are the technical aspects they see in a movie or is it just a personal liking/dis-liking..... I am asking this bcoz I don't see any critic as an ex film maker or the ex technician etc.....
I definitely watch alot of reviews but for authentic criticism I always refer to Anupama, Rajeev and Komal Nahata. The experience and knowledge and depth of the arts you all bring forward has always helped me to decide whether to watch a movie or not. It's not about being entertained by the critics mentioned. For entertainment and some feedback and points of view I watch others reactions and "reviews" But they lack the knowledge and it feels very surface when compared to Anupama, Rajeev and Komal. With time being less and less and life being so busy I don't have time to waste and when it comes to bollywood I would rather watch baahubali again than waste time watching a mediocre film. So thank you all for your work, I for one appreciate it, Safaa.
I loved Highway, love aaj kal and tamasha. I actually prefer them over Rockstar. Overall please talk more about south Indian cinema which is on the rockssss. Thank you for being the critics we look up to when wanting to watch a great movie 💖
I loveeeed it, sometimes such movies are needed to just remove your mind from daily crap. There are many movies that were worst, but it seems that when 1 person says a movie is bad almost every body goes with it
1.raes.. 2.tubelight.... 3.jab harry met sejal 4.a gentleman 5.munna michael 6.muburukan 7.Jagga Jasoos 8.Haseena Parkar 9.Tera Intezaar 10.bank chor 11.poster boys 12.half girlfriend all these 12 mainstream garbages were big flop...audience fucked those movies...things have started to change....
He may be good at his job but that does not include his continued stammering and stuttering (for lack of proper words to describe those) in every sentence. At the end of a session, I am relieved his criticism or his interviews are over! 🤷♀️
Although I am quite critical about film critics, but this discussion felt so organic, and friendly and enjoyable to me...... I mean I would love to be a part of this discussion. Each of them were open to other two, but not influenced, but honest.
This makes me feel a little bad for your profession! You guys are doing a good job! It's the evil social media trolls who mercilessly tear down anybody with an opinion. Being reviewers/critics it's your Job to have an opinion! Hope people are nicer to You 😊 I do personally love watching the reviews🙃
That point of rajeev on complete rejection of rubbish in indian cinema is the only way we can reach new heights is soo true, but unfortunately we will hv to wait a lottt to achieve that.
"These Two" are my favorite reviewers. Even when I don't agree with you guys I understand where you are coming from. Except Befikre. I will never understand that Anupama 😂
Coz they are a bunch of idiots and good English speaking assholes who do not know how to appreciate good cinema. They are here just to rate good films as average and average ones as superhits.
When they said consider the worst movies of 2017, I was filled with pity ( humorously) for the critics who have to go through terrible movies as part of their job. It gives you headaches more than heartaches
I don't know why you guys were disappointed by Jagga Jasoos, I enjoyed it though and according to me it was one of the best films of the year What an amazing cinematography, phenomenal performance by Ranbir and Shashwat Chaterjee, a really nice concept of the musical and an adventure, great songs along with an engaging story It was a complete movie guys, it deserves a lot more appreciation
Given that you identify the gaps or the misses in movies and crafts of story telling. Is it possible that you partner with producers to preview the movies and possibly .. improve or recommend some changes. Also, I guess I am one of the loners who enjoyed jab Harry met sejal as well as Meri pyari Bindu.
I don't have a channel. Not much of a video guy -- though hoping to change that in 2018! I write (A LOT) for Film Companion though. You can find my reviews on the website :)
I wana give out my nominations for the bests this year: Do give your inputs. Best Film: Toilet- ek prem katha Hindi medium Secret superstar Lipstick under the burkha Bareily ki barfi Best Director: Saket chaudhary (Hindi medium) Alankrita shrisvastav (lipstick under the burkha) Newton (amit masurkar) Ashwini Iyer Tiwari (bareily ki barfi) Advait chandan (secret Superstar) Best Actor (male): Irfan khan (Hindi Medium) Rajkumar yadav rao (Trapped) Rajkumar yadav Rao (Newton) Hritik Roshan (Kabil) Akshay kumar( Jolly Llb-2) Best Actor(female): Sridevi (Mom) Vidya balan (tumhari Sulu) Ratna Pathak shah (lipstick under my burkha) Swara bhaskar (Anarkali of Araah) Zaira Wasim (secret Superstar) Supporting actor: (male) Deepak dobriyal (Hindi Medium) K.K. menon (ghazi attack) Akshaye Khanna (Ittefaq) Rajkumar yadav Rao(bareily ki barfi) Anil kapoor( Mubarakan) Best Supporting actor:(female) Konkana sen sharma( lipstick under my burkha) Sajjal ali(Mom) Aditi Inamdar ( Poorna) Seema pahwa (Subah mangal Savdhan) Meher Vij (secret superstar)
All things aside, Barielly ki Barfi is a WINNER this year. It's neither overrated NOR did it work just because it was a slow "mid-year". With the best of the lot contributing to its flawlessness, whether it be the performances (esp. RRao, oh the transition) or the music, it is easily the PERFECT entertainer film of this year. Films like these can "crack the code", Rajeev was talking about. Good content which even the masses will love.
Urav Shukla The humor in BKB was very well written. Sharp and astute. I felt it's thunder was stolen by the ridiculously overrated Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.
I feel it it's quite unfortunate that what's filtering down to film critics is to "dumb it down", "star rating" etc. cause honestly the people who read reviews read it exactly for the reasons that people who diss reviews don't. Frankly it will be disingenuous and unfair for y'all (critics) do deliberately do a bad job just to reach out to fictitious larger audience (whatever that may be!).
This is all I wanted. Best critics having a discussion on movies of the year. The difference between Masand and Anupama is that she reads, replies and even makes videos about comments on her videos that means she values her viewers.
Rahul Desai??Who are you man??And you guys are making fun of the craft. It takes a lot of hard work and blood and sweat.First make a film then start criticizing.
Death in the gunj was a beauty.. it's one of the best movies across the world this year.. talking about teenage depression, I watched this movie after watching the celebrated show 13 reasons why and I thought this was way better than the former in telling the story of introvert teenagers
One Day! We wish and will definitely work hard to be a part of this panel :)

PANKAJ TRIPATHI IS ONE HELL OF A ACTOR
All these 50 year old Bollywood actors romancing girls half their age is cringe worthy and nauseating!!!
Newton and A death in the Gunj definitely are this years top films.Rajkumar Rao has had a phenomenal year with onetop notch performances after other.
DC 1810 hey was also in raabta
DC 1810 do they have good songs/dancing? Or is it more about the drama?
@@nameisamine Newton and a death in the gunj don't have much of songs and dancing. Both of them are strong character driven films.
and vikrant

My heart was broken too. But at the end of the day I'm happy that I watched that movie in the theater.
Lamisa Imam it flopped cause of its bad screenplay unless it would be the best cinematic experience I have ever seen in bollywood film
Rajeev seems to be spending a lot of time with KJO, he speaks just like him now
I definitely watch alot of reviews but for authentic criticism I always refer to Anupama, Rajeev and Komal Nahata.
Such an exceptionally insightful discussion!
I loved this podcast guys.
If it makes up of all the hate...i would say you guys are real good people at heart.
I loved Highway, love aaj kal and tamasha. I actually prefer them over Rockstar. Overall please talk more about south Indian cinema which is on the rockssss. Thank you for being the critics we look up to when wanting to watch a great movie 💖
Critic ignore trollers as people ignore critics 😂😂😂
Half Girlfriend was so bad
You may need therapy to get over the PTSD
I loveeeed it, sometimes such movies are needed to just remove your mind from daily crap. There are many movies that were worst, but it seems that when 1 person says a movie is bad almost every body goes with it
afgm1 Bro it was my personal opinion. I'm not following anyone opinion. I hate this movie so much.
1.raes..
2.tubelight....
3.jab harry met sejal
4.a gentleman
5.munna michael
6.muburukan
7.Jagga Jasoos
8.Haseena Parkar
9.Tera Intezaar
10.bank chor
11.poster boys
12.half girlfriend
all these 12 mainstream garbages were big flop...audience fucked those movies...things have started to change....
Daksh Arora and Arjun’s unappealing ugliness made it worst
Why the hell Rajeev is in a hurry & repeating a word 10 times.
Please make a list of Best Hollywood/Foreign films this year. There were a lot of good movies that came out at the end of the year.
Why no one mentioned TUBELIGHT...Worst in the eyar
Sab bhai ke chamche
It was fine. Not that bad. Also scared of Salman Khan .
So good to see two big film critics come together, wow!
This discussion was definitely a lot more entertaining than so many of the films this year.. Cheers guyz
Can we get to see Allu Arjun's interview by rajiv masand and anu chopra please. He is an amazing south actor.
Plz do review of every actor whose film released in 2017...
And plz give honest review some people in some part of country really appreciate it..
I can see these 3 having hell lot of fun. 😉 Lighted up my Xmas 🎅
What are their qualification by the way? Undergraduate degree for critics in nyu?
Rajiv sir and Anupama ma'am I m a big admirer of both of you . The way you moderate any interview and discussion is very engaging . 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Amazing discussion!
I would really like to know of a film that got critics divided .... passionately putting one's point across
Some of the names were a bit hard to catch, especially the underrated films. would be great if someone could list them out
Amazing analysis..
anupama another great interview by you and your team...gr8 goin
How did they forget to mention " Secret Superstar " ?
jason roberts I’m think about watching that, is it good?!
Aakash Mash it was amazing
It's average.
I don't know why you guys were disappointed by Jagga Jasoos, I enjoyed it though and according to me it was one of the best films of the year
What an amazing cinematography, phenomenal performance by Ranbir and Shashwat Chaterjee, a really nice concept of the musical and an adventure, great songs along with an engaging story
It was a complete movie guys, it deserves a lot more appreciation
Suchi S exactly....I loved the movie....in a country like us where there r so many bad like really bad movies....jagga jasoos was so good.....
Happy to see some brutal honesty in calling bad films bad :)
What abt reviewing some regional films rajeev? You can bring back your DVD recommendations segment in your show.
I follow Anupama and Rajeev. It’s been years and years and years. You guys know my vibe. ✌🏼
what is the name of Rahul Desai's channel ?
I don't have a channel. Not much of a video guy -- though hoping to change that in 2018! I write (A LOT) for Film Companion though. You can find my reviews on the website :)

The only I had with the movie was the climax....it just slowed down while bringing the film to an end! But enjoyed throughout!
I'm surprised that you guys did not mention "Trapped". That movie was really good
I feel it it's quite unfortunate that what's filtering down to film critics is to "dumb it down", "star rating" etc. cause honestly the people who read reviews read it exactly for the reasons that people who diss reviews don't. Frankly it will be disingenuous and unfair for y'all (critics) do deliberately do a bad job just to reach out to fictitious larger audience (whatever that may be!).
I loooooooooved 'Meri Pyaari Bindu' and I feel validated every time AnupamaJi says that she liked that film.
Thank you for including Rahul.
Rajeev is speaking a bit fast here so I slowed down the play speed! Hilarious! Everyone sounds so stoned!!!!!
Death in the gunj was a beauty.. it's one of the best movies across the world this year.. talking about teenage depression, I watched this movie after watching the celebrated show 13 reasons why and I thought this was way better than the former in telling the story of introvert teenagers
Guys we want u guys to do hit n missed of 2018..
Glad you mentioned Vikrant Massey; He has so much potential.
Why isn't there no mention of Trapped?
I hope all the director's watch this video and make some wise decisions for the years comings
Even I liked meri pyaari Bindu. The ending was touching and it had good songs
I like the way they are vocal about the films that they didn't like.
No talk about 'Tubelight'? Did u guys love the movie that much?
great collab!
What abt simran?
you should do this every year , or often.
Amazing conversation
how come you guys forgot secret superstar....man zaira wasim was awesome in that film
Anupama you are definitely thhe most honest critics out there. (y)
yes. what rajeev masand said. dont use CGI when u are incapable of using it
Sridevi is the best actress for 2017. She commanded the audience to weep every time she cried on the screen. You guys are so biased
rajeev sir's comment about vikrant in half girl friend is so true....its a wonderful talk.
Sirzz and mademoiselle..'Trapped' deserved at least a mention by your panel and so much more
What happened to the sound? Specially Anupama's...
Extraordinary conversation...
that was brutal....love it.....u guys rock....
