Hello Anupama - I am not sure if you will read my comment but I write here today just because I heard Rajeev saying how you get trolled most of the times. But seldom closet viewers like me don't write back to you all but we remember and we wait for your reviews. 99% times your review works for me other than something like befikre. I am really happy and thank you for doing this video as I like Rajeev too and people who are always taking interviews is good to be seen interviewed and candid. I am just a viewer so I don't know about box office so a movie that stays with me is a movie that's good. Just like that you are a film reviewer whose feedback stays with me. Thanks for straining the movies for us. I love film companion and rajeev's channel. I have not read or watched any of rahul's reviews so can't comment.
Ps: never say you are old. I am 36 and my thoughts match with yours so I guess after one crosses 30 we are all the same. Happy new year. Lots of love

And thanks to the two of you , I have learnt the art of enjoying the experience of good movies. A heartfelt thanks for all that you both do.

Talking about Imtiaz's films and forgetting to mention Tamasha really caught my attention. And while discussing underrated films of the year, Trapped and The Ghazi Attack could have been named. Hindi Medium is also one small film that did well. But overall, yes, very bad year for the movies. The lack of options was strongly felt.

I'm surprised Qarib Qarib Single is not mentioned. Sometimes just a linear story with superlative dialogues, performances and story telling is exactly what makes ones day lighter. Irrfan does that with this movie, made me smile for the next few days, which is something i look forward to when I go to watch a movie.

Okay , i have just scrolled through the "comments" here and seems like many are unaware of this guy RAHUL DESAI .Let me be a selfless PR . Earlier , I was reluctant about trying to read anybody beyond Rajeev and Anupama(like most of us here do) , but that was only the case till i discovered RAHUL DESAI . I have been religiously following him for months now , all i can say in all this time is that i found his expression of criticisim so endearing to read that it is an art in itself . His "loooong" reviews which i once thought a deterrant to read , now i long for longer ones . If his metaphors to allegories to analogies to mocking humour in his reviews is great fun to read , his objective understanding of both themes and technicalities is so much a learning affair . I would say his understanding of cinema has definitely shaped (or say trimmed) a bit of mine too . If Anupama and Rajeev are mainstream , he is like that indie movie which is yet to gain popular cognition . Sometimes I may not completely agree with his rating though(his standards are just so high) , sometimes i also feel he is reading too much between the lines . But then ,no critic can be on the same page as you. I would suggest , give him a shot , it's worth it and decide for yourself . Cheers !

Newton, A Death in the Gunj, Kadvi Hawa, Trapped, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Meri Pyaari Bindu and Haraamkhor are probably the best films of the year. Kadvi Hawa was probably the most underrated but gut wrenching and A Death in the Gunj was the most beautiful piece of filmmaking.
Meri Pyaari Bindu was severely misunderstood and was a poignant look at the power of nostalgia and Newton of course was just brilliantly written, sharp biting satire.

It was satisfying to hear their discussion here. Took the words out of my mouth on most things. Especially agree with the sentiment that there needs to be a collective shunning of poor content and cater instead to the intelligence of Indian audiences, rather than taking financial advantage of their love of masala. There is a definite recognition of what new audiences want and the limitations of the current “system”. It was sad to hear it end on such a pathetic note, citing how they are embarrassed to even refer to themselves as critics. Is that what today’s empty content has boiled film experts down to?
Mainstream Movies I liked in 2017:
A Death in the Gunj, Ghazi Attack, Newton, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Phullu, Anaarkali of Aarah, Hindi Medium, Meri Pyaari Bindu, Trapped, Shaadi Mein Zarur Aana, Baahubali 2 (Others: Poorna, Sachin: a Billion Dreams, Qarib Qarib Single?)
Side note: Wish there were more well-shot, modern Indian documentaries like “An Insignificant Man”. Looking forward to the documentary category growing in the future. So many amazing true Indian stories to tell..

I think this is largely because of the masala genre, which has entirely disembowelled the mainstream off any substance. Mainstream romantic, feel good movies with core and some social statement made through well defined characters (like DDLJ, KKHH, Kal Ho Na Ho, KANK, Jab we met, Saathiya ) accompanied by good music are things of past.

I definitely watch alot of reviews but for authentic criticism I always refer to Anupama, Rajeev and Komal Nahata. The experience and knowledge and depth of the arts you all bring forward has always helped me to decide whether to watch a movie or not. It's not about being entertained by the critics mentioned. For entertainment and some feedback and points of view I watch others reactions and "reviews" But they lack the knowledge and it feels very surface when compared to Anupama, Rajeev and Komal. With time being less and less and life being so busy I don't have time to waste and when it comes to bollywood I would rather watch baahubali again than waste time watching a mediocre film. So thank you all for your work, I for one appreciate it, Safaa.

Call me names but 'Death In a Gunj' is one of the most overrated films by critics. It is quite self important, pretentious and non-believable in terms of its setting and character's characteristics. Not to mention, the film was predictable. Except for that one scene around the dining table where they (Spoiler Alert) try to scare Vikrant's character, I didn't enjoy anything. The way first scene of the film is shot, the way actors interact in the ambassador car and the camera then slowly pushes in on Vikrant gives away the entire film! Otherwise quite happy with the way the year panned out for Independent filmmakers and film. Hope less people suffer from the second film syndrome! Bring on 2018!

Cinema Beyond Entertainment I appreciate your point of view. But A death in Gunj is surely not Overrated. A trick is to make a movie whose end is very predictable. there are layers in which the main character is introduced to us. Just for the sake of twist and turns, u can't change the fate of character.slow pacing of the movie actually works in its favor. Even though It is not a cup of tea for everyone

Cheers !
And Rahul if you are reading this , I hope your tour to eastern europe went good . I already said i have been religiously "following" you :P .
    Keep writing :)

I think the problem with film criticism in bollywood is not that the reviewer thinks a movie is bad (which is your opinion) but the fact that a reviewer compares each movie on the same scale. The best reviewers are the one's who go in not trying to critique the film but watch it like an audience member. Im not too fussed about ur view on the cinematography or the editing, but more on how the movie affected your emotions. When we go to watch a golmaal 4, our expectations are to laugh, not on the coherence of the plot.

All things aside, Barielly ki Barfi is a WINNER this year. It's neither overrated NOR did it work just because it was a slow "mid-year". With the best of the lot contributing to its flawlessness, whether it be the performances (esp. RRao, oh the transition) or the music, it is easily the PERFECT entertainer film of this year. Films like these can "crack the code", Rajeev was talking about. Good content which even the masses will love.

Every viewer who watches a movie is a critic in his own head.... But I would like to know what is the qualification to become a film critic like anupama Rajeev etc., what are the technical aspects they see in a movie or is it just a personal liking/dis-liking..... I am asking this bcoz I don't see any critic as an ex film maker or the ex technician etc.....

  • @blooddye

I feel it it's quite unfortunate that what's filtering down to film critics is to "dumb it down", "star rating" etc. cause honestly the people who read reviews read it exactly for the reasons that people who diss reviews don't. Frankly it will be disingenuous and unfair for y'all (critics) do deliberately do a bad job just to reach out to fictitious larger audience (whatever that may be!).

"This is what happens when a wife of rich producer become a film critic" means:
You are a film critic so by nature u are harsh on criticism, thinking every movies should be progressive in art and craft of film making. And being a wife of rich producer supposedly gives you that financial ability to sustain those thoughts over time, building a cocoon that implants in you a mentality that everybody can walk through the artistic path in life.

I feel bareilly ki barfi is overrated, the ending of that movie particularly destroyed it for me. I really feel that kriti sanon was a wrong choice for the movie. And also its high time that we start talking about Vikrant Massey's acting guys!! He has also given terrific performances in all the movies he has done. In my personal opinion he is at par with Rajkumar Rao in terms of acting abilities, just that he is not getting worthy roles.

ajit dash i don't think that films are so black or white you know, i feel there lies a grey area called" genre" films. These films are more focused on the given genre and are more genre oriented. Think something like :- commando, predator, die hard. All of these films are genre based, so i don't think they are meant to be compared to stuff like oscar winning or nominated films. They are given a task and they do so in an unapologetic way. Tiger zinda hai didn't market itself as a serious art film with depth and layers, it just said it's an action film with a plot to go with it.

Vikram Vedha deserves a shout, especially considering the drought of good mainstream cinema. Maybe they didn't consider regional films, but Rahul Desai did mention a few Haryanvi films. Even though there are a few flaws in the film, the script is so smart, the cinematography delicious and the lead performances mind blowing. Thrillers in India are so notoriously bad, that you can count a few good ones on the fingers (Only Kahani and A Wednesday in Bollywood come to mind). This is where Vikram Vedha is so good, excelling at a genre that has such a dubious history in Indian cinema, that generally involves either blatant plagiarism or bad inspirations/adaptations. I am amazed at why the producers didn't choose to dub it in Hindi, as Madhavan could certainly have helped there.
