Learn how to do Left-Hand Pizzicato here!
Every few Mondays or so I will be posting a CHALLENGE video where I teach a technique on the violin and people will be posting their videos to my Facebook page ( raychenviolinist)
Let me know what you would like to see me teach in next week's video! :)
Ray : you can start it slowly...
My mind under 1 sec : If you can play it slowly you can play it quickly
Exactly
That is what I tell my students, anyway.
when you played the 9th variation of paganinis 24th caprice i was like "he knows exactly why i'm here"
SAAAMMMEE
+Mavil LOL, SAME HERE
HAHA
Me too, but i want it in spanish :(
guess thats us all
(FUn fact Paganini was also a guitarist which is how he came up this idea)
A real rock star!
I already knew
But only some songs for guitar include full on plucking with the left hand they only have tapping
@@aasserelzoghby6781 I think the inspiration might have come from playing harmonics on the guitar. Although the motion is similar to that of the right hand guitar, instead of the left hand, you have to find the correct intonation as well as pluck the string simultaneously to play harmonics on guitar, other than the base harmonics.
@@l.ahrens231 huh after thinking about it it actually could be
@@l.ahrens231 I don't think harmonics are where he got the idea. After all, violin has artificial harmonics as well, and it's played the exact same way on guitar. However, look at how guitar features hammer-on and pull-offs. Merely tapping the string hard against the fret will make that note sound, but when you have a higher fret and want to have a lower pressed fret sound, you have to flick the string downward a bit while having the lower fret engaged, hence pull-off. Meanwhile, a violinist doesn't need that to maintain a trill, for instance, they just maintain the bow speed. Left hand pizz is basically a guitar pull-off, but much more exaggerated. However, because a violin doesn't have frets and doesn't make a sound when you first hammer on, you have to use bow tapping to create the initial sound, but the rest is done with pulling off.
I wouldn't care to learn this if it weren't for caprice 24
AkwadTypo YT OMG YES AS ASS SAME
Sarasate Caprice Basque for me
Tzigane
@@llary is sarasate's zigeunerweisen for me, other pieces rely too much on it for me to start
sammmme
2:03 I was waiting for him to say "and paganini was just built different" 😂😂
His sense of humor! I love u all the more! 😂😂
This video helps a lot. Waiting for more, Ray! :D
"Rome wasn't built in one day and Paganini wasn't built in..."
*dies inside*
💀
Paganini wasn't build... nor was he created... Paganini just Sprung into existance... all happened when he was Summoned by Lord Ling Ling...
Built*
I thought Left-Hand Pizzicato was a joke when I first heard of it
It's a very cruel joke Paganini wrote to torture violinists
I'm glad pianists don't have to deal with this crap
Always with the Mendelssohn :)
When he starts playing the 24th caprice!!!
Lovely and very clear! Awaiting for a new lesson! We are trying to do our best!
haha, u are a fun and energetic teacher and artist. I like ur style.
I started learning left-hand pizz and variation 9 on caprice 24 was my first piece...after like 2 hours of learning, I was able to play the first two measures of it at normal speed LOL
Ray: okay, first practice all the fingers and adjust according to the strings
Me: okay
Ray: now hold down the first finger
Me: okay?
Ray: now sync both hands and you’ll be playing Paganini caprice 24 in no time! *flawlessly plays the pizz*
Me: ok now wtf?
lmao ikr
This technique makes me want to cry , seriously ! I am just gladly practising and once I get to the left pizz hand bit I feel like not playing the violin
Working on Zigurnerweisen...this is the one thing I cannot figure out how to do on my own. Never thought to keep my nails a bit longer....as a female, I hate to cut them any shorter, but do on my left hand, anyway. So, going to try out. Love your infectious laugh and smile....as well as your playing, of-course. If you hadn't become a violinist, you might have made a great comedian! 😅 Looking forward to more on your channel!
you should at least get 1mil subscribersssssss
Thank you for making this video! It's beyond my skill level so far, but you addressed my left hand pizz questions. Thanks again!!! :)
I just found out it's your birthday! Happy Birthday from me and my little brother Nathan!! :) (BTW, I'm a viola player )
Get outta here

I'm not surprised he knows that I'm here because i need practice with Paganini variation 9
Great tips as always. Tx

Great instructor.
This is the only helpful video on left hand pizz. So far
Thank you for this video!😎
Brilliant and funny virtuoso !
Ray, thank you for this video but I still don’t know how to do it well with a finger placed on the finger board.
Lol, exactly what I was here for: paginini that pizza part!
love ur videos!!
But I thought I’d you could play slowly, you could play quickly...
can’t get enough of that joke haha
I’m learning the 5th movement, the 13th movement, and the 24th movement of Paganini. They are all devastating especially the variation no9 which is a pain of how complex it is. This video helps me understand it a little better so thx XD
will practicing it with just the bow, leave out the pizzacato, just to get the runs under your finger tips help?
:D :D thank you. lovely!
When you play the viola so you'll never even play 24 panini caprese salads and you'll just be vibin' with the telephone man eternally, so you don't have to think about left hand pizzicato but you're watching this video just for kicks😎
You're a funny guy, Ray 😂
Thats exactly what i wanted to know. But not for Paganini but for Sarasate's Malaguena
Hey look at my icon😂😂
Thanks
Ty
Should I practice this with a metronome? at 60? Then speed up?
Is that weird that although I have never put my hands on a violin, I'm practicing along with the video on my guitar?
pls tell us how to do it in (la ronde des lutins ) dance of the goblins ---specialy the last mov.
Now all you have to do is sync up your right hand with your left hand.
Yup.
And here comes Alexander Markov to play it twice as fast.
Hi Rey do you have any advice on how to perfect that pesky second finger on the D string on the Paganini? (Besides praying?) ;)
Ray Chen is the Bruce Lee of the violin!
alternate title: ray chen slowly changes from american to australian accent while doing LH pizz
Do i have to practice it for 40 hour
Caprice 24 IS SO HARD :(
Indonesia here. You are so handsome boyyy.
My boy is learning Paganini Sonata in E minor, is there any suggestions for left hand pizz part? Thanks.
i literally just cut my nails before starting my practice session 🤡🤡
Also, do I see any TwoSet Fans like myself?
Im just here because of paganini's caprice 24
I can’t imagine Brett’s face now...

啊/這是甚麼啊/我從來就沒有這種技巧/他有啊/那很好啊/
what happened to his accent?!
He grew up in Australia but he imitates the American accent
@@paphiopedilum1202 it's really good 😂😂
There's so many dumb things to learn on the violin that could injure you. I'm glad I play piano
Why am I here I do need help on it but I play the cello
Omg so hærd😥
可不可以也錄中文的影片呢?
song name in background?
Mendelssohn violin concerto 3rd movement
@@artemlyubchenko3022 2 years later, thanks man xD
Paginini was built in his mothers womb
Paganini wasn't built. Paganini sold his soul to the Devil.
He’s so hot in this video
so it's just a pull off? lol traditional terminology...
+Bo Huggabee
Pull off-For a smoother transition to a lower fret.Often, the string is accidentally plucked softly.
Left hand pizzicato-Intentionally plucking the string.
Mrs. Chen: Raymond! Stop Showing off for your friends! actually nice informative video - thanks. Rome wasn't built in a day - but to play like that, the Pagman sold his soul to the devil. No Thanks.
