    Hi Andy. I watched the whole video and was wondering when you oiled the top end I noticed that they didn't show for any oil to be put on the top bushing of the lever which moves the shuttle shaft axially? I also am curious of how the needle to hook timing/gap would be accomplished? Would it be any harder to setup than a conventional arrangement? I've noticed a huge variation of different bobbin/hook combinations of Singers manufactured. Keep up the great videos, as far as I'm concerned they don't run too long!

      Hi Paul. When I made this video I was working off the instruction manual and have since found a service manual. If I understand the area you are talking about, it is not shown a lube point in either manual. It is interesting that there are variances between the manuals as to where and how much to oil and grease. For example, the instruction manual clearly shows to put grease on the slide area of the width/ZZ parts, but no oil. The service manual shows to put three drops of oil on the slide but says nothing about grease! I have seen this before in Singer manuals and usually try to mention in the video that you can put oil on any place that metal moves on metal, except inside motors, the bobbin winder tire or plastic gears. After doing these restorations I see the damage from lack of oil and over oiling on the machine, so my main goal is to show people the possibilities and areas they may not think of and encourage them to wipe off and remove excess oil and grease.
      I'm still figuring out about the hook and how to time it to the needle. I have started a storyboard but have more questions than answers so far. It is a unique hook system to me and I've come to call it the "traveling hook", haha. I know many viewers are most interested in the vibrating bracket, the ZZ mechanics and the hook and, one way or the other, I'll be doing videos on all of those areas. I appreciate your interest in my channel and that you take time to comment and share. I've pinned this comment to the top in the hope others will see our discussion and learn, add to it or both. Thank you.

    Dear Andy, I patiently enjoyed working on my Singer Fashion Mate 237 with your tutorial... I was told my machine was particularly special, as the Fashion mate is one of the last Singer machines to have all metal gears, and this one that I have is one of the last of this model that was built in Italy. I wanted to get this right. It was gifted to me by a stranger who had me promise I would oil it regularly. It runs so so smoothly; you really can “hear” it “sing” after working thru your maintenance video :) . Hi Andy! I recently purchased a 237M from Goodwill online and it was delivered yesterday. I heard the delivery guy pull up to my house and went to the door excited for my new machine. The fellow picked it up, put it on his shoulder and started to walk down the van steps. Then the box fell off his shoulder and dropped about 4 1/2 feet to the sidewalk! When I said something about damage he said just contact his company and they will pick it up and have another delivered. I said it is a classic Singer sewing machine from Goodwill and they don’t have a new one! I took pictures of the damaged box and then opened it the rest of the way (as it was already partially open). The case latch was broken completely off, splits in the case lid and a broken piece in the case base. The faceplate on the machine was also slightly damaged. Oh, and the machine was forced out of the case base as the hinges came out of the plastic base I was disappointed in the least. Anyway I took it to my sewing room, oiled it up checked it for more broken pieces and could not find anything else so far that is broken. Whew! I will be greasing it today with my Tri-flow and see how she runs. There is a slight snapping sound like metal is rubbing too hard on metal near the worm gear maybe the grease will stop that. Great videos as usual Andy I hope you are well and feeling good again. Happy Thanksgiving! (Sorry this is so long). I’m hoping to get the shipping cost reimbursed 😛

      What a cavalier attitude that delivery person had. That's a shame. I've had a couple of machines arrived. Beat up like yours. When I have found is that if the purchase price was more than the shipping cost, I asked for the purchase price to be reimbursed. They got the machine free as a donation but it cost them money to pay for shipping. So if they get their shipping costs back, they're pretty happy. You may have seen I have a whole playlist of videos for your machine and some of them show about taking the parts off up there and cleaning certain areas and so forth. You may have seen the playlist already. If not, you can go to my home page and look under the list of playlists by model number. I think you're really going to love that machine. @@andytubesewing1953 Yes, I'm watching them as I go! We managed to move the flanged bushing from the arm shaft outwards about a half inch, and found lots more thread hiding under it, which was the cause of the binding. There was also more thread wrapped around the motor under where the belt would wrap. So I've decided not to use the bobbin winder on this machine as I believe it's the cause of the thread getting into those two areas, and it's so much trouble to remove it! I got the machine for $30, and after a good clean with kerosene, full oiling, it's moving smoothly at last! Just made a donation to your paypal as just a small appreciation of all the help you've given me. I won't even buy a machine unless you have a video on maintaining it! 🥰

      @@TrishMeyer99 What good news! I'm happy it is running well. It is a smooth running machine, isn't it? Don't be shy about the bobbin winder. It actually works very well and this type is found on about a dozen Singer Models. Where folks get into trouble is they run the thread from the spool on the spindle directly over to the bobbin on the BW and bypass the BW Tension System that is way over to the left on the arm cover. Without tension on the thread, it can unspool very quickly and unevenly and start "throwing" loops of thread all over the BW and handwheel and, as you found, even down on the motor belt. Yikes! Towards the end of my BW video, ruclips.net/video/xCxEHLH_Om0/видео.html I show the correct way to run the thread around the BW Tension System parts to get an even, smooth wind onto the bobbin. The Model 237 INstruction Manual also has nice instructions on pages, 9, 10, & 11 showing how to wind the bobbin. I forget some people don't know about free manuals on the Singer Support Page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=237 Sometimes the page is too busy and you have to try again, but eventually, you can download a free 66-page pdf copy that is full of info for using the machine. I did get your donation ❤and thanks for your generosity in support of my efforts. 🙏It's very kind of you.

      @@andytubesewing1953 You're welcome! I'm still working on my Stella. I've ordered a replacement plastic bobbin "gate" as mine has a crack in it. I'm hoping that will solve the problem with the bobbin catching the top thread in zigzag mode, and wrapping it around itself. It's working in straight stitch. I was brave and removed the screw on the bobbin case and cleaned and polished inside, so the thread is now smoother coming out of the bobbin! (Although that tiny screw is one pita to replace, I feel it's worth the hassle!)
      I also found the 237 Service Manual PDF on the 237 Facebook Group. I cleaned it up and reuploaded it as a Searchable PDF.

    That was great, many thanks! Was wondering when you'd get to the bobbin case and where the feed dogs are, mine was full of lint and dust so just took off the plate holding the feed dogs and cleaned that out with tweezers and a pin. Also cleaned it with 95% alcohol but not on the mechanical parts, did not wash it (too scared!) but not much goopy grease inside so it was ok. (From watching the cleaning vid...) Also took apart the motor and cleaned it thanks to your wonderful vid. Not exactly the same but I got the idea. Now to see if actually works! (Just bought 2nd hand). A great video and thanks! I have a machine I oiled that is screwed in a table. It was a big headache. I don't think I reached all the areas because the machine doesn't fall backward enough and I have to fight against gravity. I'm thinking that oiling won't be easy but a chore if I have to pull the machine out of the table. My manual is hard to read and I wonder if service manuals are easier to view? Hi Andy I have a singer 646 and it appears to be surging. Thoughts. No replaced the cam stack gear. I think I timed it correctly. The zig zag is beautiful but it sounds rough and goes fast and then slow

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      It's hard to diagnose this remotely, but if you replaced a gear here is what I have found. The new gear is incorrect. Too tall, too many teeth, too few teeth, or teeth at the wrong angle. When it is the correct gear it has been installed with the mesh too tight, meaning the gears are pushed together too tightly. That's called binding and when a gear binds it turns erratically. If too many or too few teeth (compared to the gear or worm it mates with) it slows down and speeds up. This assumes that your foot controller is in good working condition and not surging power to the motor. If you did replace the cam stack gear it has to be adjusted so it does not bind to the arm shaft. There is usually an eccentric stud that turns the stack towards or away from the arm shaft worm gear area. I don't work on Touch & Sew Models like the 646 but here is a video about adjusting for binding of a cam stack that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
      ruclips.net/video/egDAePpqjW0/видео.html The parts list I have for model 646 shows the gear as part #172114. www.ebay.com/itm/274434857102

    @AndyTube . great timing for this video, I just found it,, Thank you.. I might be going to buy a 237 tomorrow for 35 bucks. it looks really nice in the pictures, but in the marketplace description for the machine he says, he thinks it has the wrong belt, umm humm...because the motor turns, but the belt slips, and the needle doesn't go up and down. -- yeeeahh --.. I'm thinking the machine might be stuck a bit. when I go see it I will try turning the hand wheel. but,, for that price, I'll probably take it. Anyway. I have 9 vintage black Singers.. But this model is new to me. SO I will try and watch any videos you have on the 237. any ideas of what I should look for (possible problems) on this model? Thank you so much for all of your videos.!

      Two known trouble areas are the tension unit indicator plate ( the - | + dial ) will crack if it has not already done so, and the thread guide clipped onto the lower part of the needle bar is difficult to remove and may have been broken off. This is the only model I've seen that thread guide on so I think SInger realized it was a dud. One of the videos is all about oiling the machine. The horizontal arm shaft bushings are usually the case of a frozen machine. The oil settles during storage and dries up like varnish. Fresh oil and heating with a hairdryer get things moving again.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thank you so much.. I will have to look at your videos. I did pick up the machine this AM for $20.. I had a hunch it was frozen. and it appears the main shaft is.. the needle bar was not quite where it should be either, about 1/4 inch off, I could tell by the black ring, below where the set screw was. I have to look at a video, showing the disassembly of the nose area. it seems like the problem might be there. ? but? IDK.. the clutch set screw was backed out, so the wheel would turn, but not the shaft. Thank you so much for the reply,, I really appreciate it.. . I will have to watch some more videos this evening. Hi Andy I’ve just bought a 237 and the zz slider/ arm was really stiff , oiled and greased everything as you video, couldn’t find out the problem,
    not until I turned it on it’s side to look at the space it moves in, behind the front fascia plate there’s a metal plate and this has been situated wrong and it was pushing down on the leaver, once removed it slides easier, but the plate is there for the grooves the l-r-c leaver to sit in when you’re moving the needle to either left or right, I’ve had to file the top of the cutout by a good 3/4 eighths to get it so I could push the leaver down to move the slider, have you come across this before, seems like a poor quality build issue thx John

      This was the only 237 I've worked on and did not have that issue. You mentioned situated wrong and I'd agree but not by design. Singer was making machines for over 100 years when they made this model. You think is was just built wrong in the factory at Monza? Sounds to me more like sommeone worked on the parts before.

      Andy Tube hi andy thx for that reply, it seems I was wrong about my findings on that plate, it still wasn’t moving as freely as yours in your video so had another look at it, when I looked at your arm in your video mine looked to be slightly out , I loosened the large screw on the back of the arm, and the tension it released could be felt immediately, I tried moving the zz arm and it was easier but still not right, so I loosened it even more and the whole zz mechanism seemed to move, I tightened it up and now it moves really easily, I’m wondering if it had been dropped at some point and knocked the mechanism out of alignment, any way it’s now moving really easily and it works fine , thxs for your advice and links I’m sure I’ll be looking at them soon best regards John

    Andy, I have a Singer Fashion Mate 257. It’s top vertical gear has worn down. The machine has no front panel to open so I can’t seem to get to the gear. I have taken it all apart but see no solution. Is this work horse done? I have had it for many many years and it never let me down. (I see you have many videos but not one on this sweetie.)

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 года назад

      Model 257 is in a group of models that requires that gear and shaft to be removed OUT THE TOP of the machine instead of the bottom like in my gear replacement video ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html I've never worked on one. I've had a couple people tell me that they drilled holes into the back of the machine to drill off the old gear, then replaced the shaft from the bottom. They did not send pictures so I don't know if the holes were just big enough for a drill bit and to see what they were doing, or big enough to pull the gear out. SOund like you'd need a drill press to me. Terry Fielding sells a guide on changing that gear out and I think he sells the gear and shaft also. The guide is downloadable and costs $9.50. I have a 20% off coupon for his store that is good thru 7/31/2020. Here is his page about it: site.tandtrepair.com/Fashion_Mate.html I have not done this type of gear replacement out the top so I can't advise you much. It's up to you I guess to decide to spend $25 or so and give it a shot. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

    Thanks for this video. I am just wondering if you might have heard or come across a singer 282 Fantasia II machine. It looks similar to the 237 except the bobbin is on the front plate to the right and not the top. Andy Tube Thanks for your prompt reply Andy. I have since had a good look over the machine and I found a silver sticker on the right side. It says the model is a 287. So strange because it says 282 on the front faceplate. I will watch the video link that you included in your comment.
      So far I have oiled the machine and adjusted the motor belt tension up. This hasn’t seemed to work. If I turn the hand wheel and get the process started the needle will then go up and down however the stitches don’t hold and I end up with a big mess down in the bobbin housing.

      @@kristiecollins4367 First thing, I found a free Model 287 manual here: www.manualsdir.com/manuals/719263/singer-9100-9100-professional-instruction-manual-287.html
      Your problem sounds like a tension issue, assuming the machine is actually making a lock stitch. When the upper tension is much lighter than the bobbin tension then the needle thread gets pulled through the fabric and you get "nesting" below. You can get the manual and be sure you are threading the needle correctly (no insult intended) and try more upper tension. If the machine is not making a lock stitch then that is most likely timing. I assume you can use the needle thread to "bring up" the bobbin thread through the hole in the needle plate before you start sewing. If so that usually means the timing is OK or you could not bring up the bobbin thread. There are a couple of things to think about. You could also have a broken tension unit as I did if the indicator dials are plastic. ruclips.net/video/-TmDis0pcmU/видео.html
