THE EDGE of NIGHT ABC 90 MIN SPECIAL December 1, 1975

  • The Edge of Night moved from CBS to ABC on December 1, 1975 with a 90 minute special that beautifully summarized all the stories created by Emmy winner Henry Slesar.
    It was the end of an era on EDGE as well as soap opera in general. The Edge of Night was the final soap to stop taping LIVE on November 28, 1975. By the 80s, ABC's GH producer Gloria Monty had changed the game by demanding quicker stories, younger casts and better production values. The other soaps soon followed suit. I joined EDGE as Raven Alexander in 1977 during the transition. It was a very exciting time to be on Daytime TV.
    This beautiful time capsule of soap history remains a genre gem.
    Thank you Mark Thomas Faulkner for sharing this video with all of us!

      A surprising number of people get pushed down stairs in soaps. Ryan's Hope started with Frank falling or being pushed down some stairs, (spoiler alert, he was pushed by Dehlia).

    My thanks to you, and to Mark Thomas Faulkner. I'm so sorry that almost none of the '70s soaps survive as I've often heard that was when they were at their best, most challenging, and more modern than most of what came afterward. I've long felt that Edge of Night was one of the soaps that, if revived today, would still be a success. The show is timeless. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and anyone else reading this.

      I could not agree more. Much gratitude for sharing this golden episode with us. You are so right, the 70’s were the try heyday of soaps. I am thankful I was around to see them then. I could not wait to tune in tomorrow!!! I loved all of the CBS soaps, as those are the ones I grew up with. I fell in love with The Secret Storm. It as incredible. I still mourn the loss of it to this day. I wish there were some wonderful of it from at least 1972-1974, when it sadly went off the air. This episode is The Edge of Night is a sampling of how great they were. This episode with Geraldine’s incredible performance is nothing short of magnificent!!! Odd, but I remember that day, not because I was able to see it, but because I was at my grandmother's after school and recorded her chatting with a neighbour and griping with her sister about their other sister, who was sick and didn't want to take the medicine. She laughed barrels after hearing herself and I always recall it because she mentioned the death (of the day before) of my cousin, whose family I spent the summer of 73 with. His wife used to watch the show religiously . . .The show is a fond memory . . .unique in the annals of TV entertainment.

By the end of the 90 minutes you were invested in the characters quite nicely. Danny, Tracy, Johny and Laurie all going down a story. Surprising to see Kevin Jameson was a suspect in the Geraldine attack.

      Actually, ABC utterly gutted the gothic yet tantalizingly credible work of art that CBS had accomplished with live broadcast and all the talent that funneled into it. It went right squirrelly. ABC then was on a hubristic ramage and progressively cheapened every formula of drama they took in hand. NO network worked harder to lower the intelligence or taste bar more than ABC in the latter 70s, like it/don't like it. The Edge of yesteryear at this point was positively rivetting by comparison.

      The story I remember reading is that ABC wanted to regularly air the show as part of their late-night block. However, doing that required a contract change for the actors, and Donald May, aka Adam Drake, wouldn't agree to it.
      I'm curious if the late-night airing of this episode was pretty much what had been broadcast earlier or if each airing had different commercials that targeted the audiences who would have watched at the different times.

    Jacques Roux was the survivor of the plane crash who helped George C. Scott solve the mystery in that classic movie Back In The Day.
    And sure enough, twelve years later, he he comes again, to save the day on an American serial!
    Just one more thing to love about Edge Of Night!
    The lack of faith that CBS had in this show (and in Henry Slesar) was bad enough; Procter & Gamble wasn't much better, and ABC should have shown a little more chutzpah in the promotion department - but those are all Other Stories ...

    I wish when proctor & gamble briefly released box sets of some great and some very very old episodes of Guiding Light and As The World Turns after their cancellations, that they had done the same with other p&g soaps like Edge of Night especially, and Another World. Come on soap classics please! BTW I am a 52 year old man whose first experience to soaps was when the babysitter would watch all ABC soaps... But only Edge interested me. The suspenseful crimes and murder mysteries etc held more attention than romance did. So I remember well my favorites: geraldine, the funny butler, Preacher and the college admissions scandal girl (Lori Loughlin aka Jody Travis), and especially my favorites Sky and Raven! Great chemistry between Sharon and Larkin Malloy. Those wonderful memories are buried in the cobwebs of my mind from those decades ago. Edge you always will always be remembered and yep the 79s and early 80 to mid 80s soaps blew away what soaps are doing these days. And rip to the actors sho sadly were taken way too soon by the awful AIDS crisis. Edge had a lot more losses than other soaps. RIP to Joel, Irving, and Dennis who are the actors I remember plus many other actors from the New York soaps. Anyway Edge ruled and I would love love to have some released on DVD someday but I should just enjoy what I can find on You Tube, a great treasure trove of television greatness gone by!

    Soap opera stairs are often very clumsy from an architecture point of view. I noticed when Geraldine climbs the stairs, and the camera pans left, there's a wall in the living room, which Geraldine would be walking into unless there's a very odd 90-degree turn and a hallway built around the outside of the house.
    And everyone has noticed that the staircase of the Whitney Mansion ascends in the opposite direction when Jefferson Brown lived there.

    • @SharonRoseGabet
      @SharonRoseGabet  5 месяцев назад +5

      Yes they "renovated" the Whitney Mansion before Sky and Raven moved in. It was much easier to get camera shots with the direction of the stairs, the larger foyer, and even the added balcony.

    • @sbookey
      @sbookey 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@SharonRoseGabet In general, almost every set of stairs on soap operas make no architectural sense. They often show an exterior shot of a house before moving to the action inside and very rarely do the stairs make sense. Except for maybe the stairs in the Martin and Wallingford homes on AMC, and on OLTL, the stairs a Llanfair and La Boulaie.

    I can honestly say, alot men back in the day, definitely watched this soap! From my football/basketball coaches, my uncles, older male cousins were into EON. This soap definitely kicked ass! Had the best murder mysteries, trials, court drama, overall great actors than any other soaps, that were on during that time. On a side note, the actress that's in this episode, who's playing the character Tracey? Seriously looks like the actress who will play (the 3rd?) Nicole Kavanaugh a couple years later.

  • @weilruss1
    @weilruss1 5 месяцев назад +4

    I remember watching the final CBS episodes and this ABC 90 minute premiere - bringing back Maeve McGuire as Nicole was huge and brought about a great dramatic story. Two years later, the show would shift losing almost every single character in this episode with the exception of Mike, Nancy, and Geraldine.

      @@edgeof1956Slesar nearly always wrote off characters unceremoniously. Phil, Louise and Sara Louise Capice, And Martha Marceau just ceased to appear. Cookie and Ron Christopher were supposed to make periodic appearances (According to Daytime TV magazine) but they never did. Alberta Grant(Liz Fields) was only supposed to be gone three months but it turned out to be permanent. Jim Fields (Alan Feinstein) left for Canada and we never knew if his marriage to Liz lasted. Then Tiffany was killed off 4 months after this episode. Laurie was committed to a mental institution, Phoebe was killed in an car accident off screen, Danny and Tracy left town, Johnny left too without fanfare, Kevin later was killed in a car accident too. Nicole (Maeve McGuire) would leave 2 years later, Serena was committed to an institution. Quentin was murdered, and Adam Drake was brutally killed off sparking viewer outrage and further erosion of ratings.

      @@larkpraise But that was also one of the hallmarks of Edge, there was never really a guarantee that a character would stick around. Yes, you had Mike and Nancy but with everyone moving or dying or disappearing or all that, it never really surprised me when a character was on screen for months or years and then suddenly was taken off the board.

    So this was actually posted by THE Sharon Gabet? I tell you, she was unforgettable as Raven Alexander Jamison Swift Whitney Brown Whitney (do I have that right after all these years? Sadly, I lost track of Raven's marriages when our local ABC affiliate dropped "Edge" in 1982... one of the dark days of my life). Anyway, I never forgave the show for replacing Maeve McGuire as Nicole Travis Drake, but I continued watching because of Sharon Gabet. She is so talented, and so beautiful. Dazzling, actually.

      A lot of it had to do with P&G, who owned the soap, and P&G not wanting one of their shows up against another of their shows. At the time, EON was usually the last show in a lineup and ABC had no soaps after GH at 4p. What I don't know is if Another World was up against As the World Turns, both P&G shows. As the shows expanded to an hour, that might have become unavoidable. In the end, AW and ATWT were both on at 2p in the NYC and other markets, but I am guessing that maybe ATWT was on in the 1p hour and AW was on at 2p
