I'm 16, but I've encountered more than 16 birthday cakes in my life because of being around other people during their birthdays (family, friends, coworkers, etc.)...

It seems like you never used a mirror in your life. In 83 the open end of the 3 faces towards the 8, while in 38 the open end of the 3 faces away from the 8. In fact the 83 would look something like this: E8 with the open end of the 3 still facing towards the 8, the left and the right digit simply swapped (the corners rounded of course, I did not find an exact representation of the mirror image of a 3 on my keyboard, an epsilon would have been far more suitable)
That was the intention, but they did it incorrectly.
