WHOA....Digging that D7.... found out about cbg, cause I didn't want to raise the action on my SG to play slide.. so glad I found out about these and your channel!!!!
I used poplar necks too. I used a modified Uncle Crow mounting on the top of the box with a block underneath. My first one used an old surface mount electric pickup mounted crosswise with two wings coming out of the main stick. Volume knob, jack, that's it. Oak "fretboard" (just burned on to give me a ballpark) I call it the Southern Cross Crow guitar. I've beat the living hell out of that guitar knocking it over, throwing it in the back seat with everything else, in the trunk, no case, no anything. etc. etc. Its still kicking.
As a bassist only about 3 months into cog I’ve been a bit nervous of hitting it hard. Last few days I’ve been smashing it, it sounds better and the worst is I break a string. Cheers for the chat and from now on I’m going full speed.
I make mine with a neck on box similar to Uncle Crow a la unstrung13. Only I cut a pocket at one end near the bridge, and have a couple of wing pieces to hold up the electric pickup. I glue and screw the neck to the box and the bloody thing is a baseball bat even though it has a poplar neck. I have it strung with low strings and have since I built it a year ago. No bowing at all.
You can also tune a 6 String CBG (or any Standard 6 String Guitar) in Fifths thanks to the Octave4Plus 5ths Tuned String Set (use lightest Recomended Gauges shown) which use a super strong .006 for the B4 (an Octave above the B String on a Guitar). Finally a Nashville Tuned 6 String Cigar Box Guitar. A Nashville Tuned Guitar is basically a 6 String version of the Tenor Guitar. Like any 6 String Guitar it's tuned E-E but the lowest 4 Strings (or 5 if you have the Octave4Plus 6 Gauge B4 String) are an Octave Higher (via Octave Strings from a 12 String Set) to emulate a Tenor Guitar sound. Fun fact Nashville Tuned Guitars aka 6 String Tenor Guitars are really really popular in both Recording & in live settings, & were used in Rock, Country, & even Pop Music as a way to add some Higher end.
I stumbled on a tuning when I broke the G string on my 6 string, 5 strings now tuned to D A D A D. with a little work I started to sound like I wanted to. do you make a 5 string cigar box? I haven't replaced the G-string yet, I'm having to much fun!
It would be really cool to have a 30" 4 string cgb, and tune it to dead mans tuning, DDAD, so you'd have a drop D style tuning, with a low D bass note added.
Cool! You've just invented a (chromatic) Cigar Box Strumstick!
I've been thinking about breaking all the rules and forming an acoustic Danzig era Misfits cover band with CBG & a tin can mic.
Dare ya to add some Samhain to that list of songs!
Guys, I like your style 💚
Include all eras of Misfits or it's not legit in my book.
Hell yeah
Man, I hope you followed that dream
Great, Shane! You really rock! Many thanks from Romania, multumesc!

Shane, I love your style man. Some of the tunes you belt out kind of remind me of a country jailbreak.
Shane! You more then anything else have inspired me to get into CBGs. I don't play, but enjoy coming up with ideas for what to build next.
Open E and Open D sharp are two of my favorite tunings!

One thing I've noticed about building my own cbg is it's a valuable lesson in creative problem solving.
Good thoughts as always. Looking at it with new eyes and no rules.

Just swapped to DAD. Such a muddy sound but pretty much what I wanted to hear. Loving it!

A Nashville Tuned (High Strung) 6 String Cigar Box Guitar with an Octave4Plus .006 High B sounds like the missing piece we should have,
Re-watching on my iPad thank you Shane for all the lessons, can you make my cbg play better?
Great video!
Great vid Shane! Thanks!
ordered a stubby slide over a month ago. How long should it take to arrive?
What about open d for 4 string? What's the 4th string tuning that will give it a muddy deap dirty sound
Very prolific channel . Great to see others promoting these amazing guitars . Drop by sometime
really nice, thanks Shane (y)
wow love it
What's your neck scale there? Any preference? I'm guessing you can make up too much slack on a short scale with different gauges?
I stumbled on a tuning when I broke the G string on my 6 string,
5 strings now tuned to
D A D A D.
with a little work I started to sound like I wanted to.
do you make a 5 string cigar box? I haven't replaced the G-string yet, I'm having to much fun!
Number 1 rule of CBGs, "There are no rules"! You want 5 strings, 7, 10, 12 do it! If it doesn't work out, try something else!

Johnny Lowebow has made some similar to that... even down to Drop A and lower. I'll have to try it for a video.
Love me some drop D!
I always break the rules. I am wearing white today...and I play the same way. ❤💙
ummm...how do you make a 7th tuning? You dropped the high string? a 1/2 step maybe? sounds great!
Drop the high string down one step. In this case, it's dropped to a C
Shane Speal Thank you!
LOL, if you break it go make another one... Love It
That tuning sounds custom made for your Personal Jesus lesson.
Man, what do you do to your hair? It grows faster than Usain Bolt can run! Oh yeah, that's a seriously badass sounding gitty - nice one!
Andy Mitchell just happy to still have my hairline at 48!
Yeah, I remember those days. Unfortunately, they're in the foggy, distant past - lol 😞.
