For anyone who has to experience this horrible disease (BTW this video helped me sooo much) here are the stages in which it affected all three of my dogs: 1st sign) lack of energy. Dog seems healthy and ok but you notice they aren't as energetic as usual. (example you call them they sit and wag tail look happy but don't get up to greet you) also somewhat more sleepy. 2nd sign immediately follows the next day or two, little to no appetite. Some mention diarrhea, but mine had normal stools, never had diarrhea. Skipping meals and little interest in food even treats. No drinking of water. At this point you need to seek a vet asap. Let me tell you the vet really won't do anything for the dog and even if it was distemper, I promise you there's nothing the vet can do that you can't do at home. Dont pay for a test to check if it's parvo or distemper, unless you have that kind of dough. It's a complete waste of money. Distemper and Parvo are viruses and a virus really only requires the same treatment the flu does. Point is, they are sick. What you should ask from your vet is an IV with fluids. This is ALL you need from them. YOU CAN SAVE YOUR DOG IN THIS STAGE AND AVOID THE NEXT HORRIBLE STAGES if you just get that IV and start hydrating your dog. About the time they eat normally is when to give them the IV the size of their paw is enough fluids until the next meal time. You also need to give water in the mouth. Get a medicine syringe and every two hours about 3ml of water. Buy liquid or gel vitamins and give 2x a day, a small amount. 3rd stage: a cold. sneezing, mild cough, and the KEY symptom runny nose, leaking eyes. Clean their eyes and nose frequently. If nose is dry use Vaseline. Final stage: seizures and ticks. One. if my dogs would lick in the air for minutes at a time. This is a sign of the disease spreading to the spinal cord and brain. this is heart breaking to watch. One dog was worse than the other for me. If your dog makes it through a couple days of this and is still alive despite how terrible they look, you made it! your dog will be back to normal with constant hydration, vitamins, and lots of love. my oldest dog looked awful at this point. skinny, ticking and weak. First sign of recovery: tail wagging again, finnaly able to get up to walk even for a min, a tiny interest in food again, drinking water on their own even if just a few licks. Offer small treats and give lots of love at this point you'll have your baby back again. Clean, bleach, and soap EVERYTHING. You dont want them to contract it again even though it is a virus, they can give it to another dog. Education is key. All my dogs recovered but one of my dogs has permanent ticks. It's been a year she still has them but she's completly happy and healthy!

    • @sarahlee4718

Ajit Thakuri IV fluids are intravenous liquid it goes in behind the neck of the dog through a needle. You can buy one at a vet or purchase online. Even if your dog ends up not having it, the fluids won't hurt them. You need to research it. If you can't get one, buy electrolytes for dogs or kid pedialyte no flavor. squirt it in your dog's mouth with a syringe every two hours. Keeping my dog hydrated was the number one way to fight distemper for us.

This is in no way professional advice. This is only from my experience when all three of my dogs caught it. It's important to have a good idea if your pet has come into contact with the disease as you don't want to treat something that isn't there.

Thank you for posting this presentation and for doing the work with the dogs. I am the breeder of a pup that came down with Distemper a few weeks ago. I forwarded this to the owner/vet and they are using the information on the video to help with treatment of this pup. She's 3 weeks in and doing ok. She has good and bad days but it looks like she will survive. She was about 11 weeks when first symptoms appeared.

Some of the symptoms here is in my dog shes has ticks, always moves, and it affected her sleeping she will sleep and then starts crying with her eyes open and then stands up but she's trembling. She can walk, stand up, but she falls too. We got her in the vet and they said she's negative but they found out that the shape of her heart is circle so we're currently working on that. We're going back to the vet after one week and see what it is..

Our 3 month old puppy is in terrible condition. We’ve tried everything, now on about $10,000 of veterinary bills and he has been at the Purdue University small animal hospital. He keeps getting systemic infections and seizures that even the strongest anti-seizure medications aren’t preventing. We don’t want to lose him, but they told us he is only getting worse and it’s time to let him go. We have a fenced in yard with another dog (who has been perfectly healthy). We’ve never let him out of our sight because of his age and my fiancé works from home where he is in the office with her all day. Just hours after getting the merck dhpp vaccine he began his symptoms by first throwing up and we thought nothing of it, until the next day the nose and eye drainage began.

My 6 months old pup had a broken leg which is healed now and he started running too, I thought my baby will have a normal life but he recently got distemper and reading about it made me heart ache. Watching him struggle is the hardest part, I'm always crying. I've been to 4 different vets and none of them knew what was wrong with him. I had to tell the last one to check if its distemper or not and it came out positive and they said nothing much can be done and its better to put him down. I'm not ready to say goodbye and watching your video really is giving me a little hope and I'll try every possible way to save me baby. Thanks for the information I really hope it works.😭

Thank you very much for sharing. I got a dog from bosnia that was really bad with distemper and neurological effects, too. She just kept falling down WHEN trying to walk, neurological ticks, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, bad skin, decayed nose and pads. 1st vet advised to kill her, 2nd one "did not want to give a perspective" but I wanted to give it a try and found your video as a guideline. I did all except the New Castle Vaccicine and the vets wouldn't give me all the medics for the respirator so it was only NaCl in that. It was really hard work but it's been only 4 weeks and she is totally changed! She walks and starts running like every other dog, nose got much better, pneumonia left... only the skin is some more work and the tics stay, but it nearly is a miracle to us. My compliments to your great work and again: Thanks for sharing. I wish more vets would know about that.

My 12 week old puppy was just confirmed to have distemper via test (I thought maybe it was a false positive from the vaccine). For the past two weeks, we have been on baytril and claramox to fight his pneumonia in his lungs. We also got m-suspension for his diarrhea. For the past two weeks, hes been looking good. Poop looks solid. Mixing raw goat milk with his water to make sure he drinks and hes been eating his puppy freshpet food. About 2 days ago, he developed a tick in his right hindleg (wont stop until hes completely asleep) and is beginning to whine a little bit when attempting to sleep.
I asked my vet to prescribe me some anti seizure medicine just in case i see my puppy begin to show signs of it but she declined to prescribe it to me. Looks like I have to go holistic. I bought some doggy CBD oil, vitamin c and pine bark extract. All of those should be coming in soon.
For fluids, I have been mixing water + unflavored Pedialyte and raw goat milk. Giving that mix to him every 2 hours (like 2 oz). Feeding him freshpet puppy food with water (syringe water on top of the sliced food) 4 times a day. Hoping for the best.

Hi, I speak mainly spanish. I hope with all my heart that you can answer my questions.
My dog is two years old Schnauzer. 7 weeks ago he got CDV cause he was never vaccinated, he had respiratory symptoms, anorexya, KCS, hyperkeratosis.
He now looks really good and happy, we are giving a good fight until now. However, actual symptoms are three: KCS, Hyperkeratosis and less frequent TICS.
    My questions are:
    1) SHOULD I STOP GIVING HIM ANTIBIOTICS?
    2) SHOULD I GIVE MEDICATION AGAINST TICS?
    3) Hyperkeratosis treatment is vaseline only? I worry about his pads and nose.
    4) He is not producing tears yet, he's using artificial tears only. My Vet did not recomended Cyclosporine, but because of searching and investigating over internet I doubt of the opinion of my Vet. What do you suggest?
    5) I did not gave him NEWCASTLE, is it a good idea to give that to him now?
    6) Finally, At this point, WHAT MORE CAN I DO to boost his recovery?
I'm working with my veterinarian by suggesting things that I'm finding in internet. Very sadly here in Peru there's not enough knowledge of the treatment of distemper. My dog is recovering mostly because of the internet articles i found and videos like this one,
If someone speaks spanish and wants some help I would love to share the few things I know about CDV.
As Dr Ellen said in minute 25:15.
Thanks in advance for any response.

      Hello Dogtok,
Dr. Ellen Jefferson replied to your questions:
      1) SHOULD I STOP GIVING HIM ANTIBIOTICS? Yes if there are no more respiratory symptoms. I would give antibiotics at least 10 days longer than any cough or sneeze or wheeze from the lungs.
      2) SHOULD I GIVE MEDICATION AGAINST TICS? No, there is nothing effective. It will just take time to get used to the tics and hopefully over years he will outgrow them.
      3) Hyperkeratosis treatment is vaseline only? I worry about his pads and nose. Yes as long as not red or swollen. If just extremely dry and cracked then keep moist with vaseline.
      4) He is not producing tears yet, he's using artificial tears only. My Vet did not recomended Cyclosporine, but because of searching and investigating over internet I doubt of the opinion of my Vet. What do you suggest?
Cyclosporine helps as well as an antibiotic ointment to decrease any secondary infection
      5) I did not gave him NEWCASTLE, is it a good idea to give that to him now?
No it is too late- it won't help him at all now. Luckily he survived without it.
      6) Finally, At this point, WHAT MORE CAN I DO to boost his recovery? I'm working with my veterinarian by suggesting things that I'm finding in internet. Very sadly here in Peru there's not enough knowledge of the treatment of distemper.
Dr Jefferson: There is not enough knowledge anywhere. Good quality food (maybe even puppy food), dewormer, and puppy vitamins are good to use until he is almost back to normal. He might have more signs but only time will tell. Good job saving your dogs life. Be sure he is not in contact with other unvaccinated dogs at any time until probably another 30-60 days from now. And make sure all your future dogs get vaccinated.

Hello again, thank you so much and sorry for my late response.
I hope that someone could get answers too by reading this comments section.
It is almost week 8 fighting against CDV and my dog is getting better everyday. KCS is still here, but Hyperkeratosis has reduced and tics are present in very little quantity and intensity.
      1) I’m giving to him 01 VITAMIN B capsule (contains B1+B2+B12) every 24 hours. For re-myelination, as I read. Q: Is it good to keep that periodicity? For how long?
      2) A few days ago I’ve noticed that my dog is doing yellow "crystal urine" and I worry about that. Q: Could it be caused by CDV or could it be caused by excessive medication or minerals in his actual feeding? (following questions are related)
      3) I’m giving to him 01 PET TAB PLUS tablet (commercial name, sorry if it’s not correct to name it) for vitamins and minerals supplementing. Q: Is it good to keep that periodicity?
      4) Weeks ago my dog didn’t want to eat, so I was forcing him to drink all blended food (chicken/beef meats, liver, and vegetables) and that was his only (and good) feeding. Now he only wants to eat purina pro plan, eukanuba, fleshy bones and sometimes canned foods, but not vegetables, and I worry about the possible lack of nutrients against CDV. Q: At this stage of distemper, is it a good idea to force ingestion of (blended) vegetables?
      5) Q: Should I increase or reduce his physical activity? (He has always been very active and playful, except in the hard times of distemper).
      6) A few times i have noticed he has some slight difficulty to breath, it's like snoring or somewhat. Q: Is it respiratory or nervous system related?
Finally, One and a million times: Thank you very much for your helpful attention and answers.
      Sincerely
      Adrian Ollachica M.

I have a question that I can't find an answer for. I own two rescue dogs and I don't know if they have been treated for parvo or distemper. If they have been treated without my knowledge, is it safe for them to be treated again? They are both adult dogs and very healthy but I'm always afraid to take them to the dog park or any place where they will come into contact with other dogs for fear of them catching something. I am afraid to have them treated because there might be side effects to being double treated.

Here is the reply I received from the vet:
Does he mean vaccinated for parvo and distemper (as opposed to treated)? is not unsafe to have them vaccinated by a veterinarian if they have had vaccinations in the past.
If he truly does mean treatment - if the dogs have had distemper and/or parvo in the past, they will have immunity to both viruses now and it would be extremely rare for them to become sick again from these diseases. I'd recommend going to his private vet to discuss vaccinations.

After his medication, he can eat properly now and also drinks enough water. The only problem is his left leg which never stops twitching. We're scared he might not be able to walk anymore or if it's a sign of him getting worse. I'm not sure if he's recovering or is getting worse. I got two of them tested again because of persistent coughing, one tested positive and the other tested negative. They are all (6 of them) have antibiotics, antitussive, vitamin c, b, and immunol plus canglob d injections. The one had stopped coughing already. Pat, thank you for watching and writing to us. We recommend you speak with your veterinarian about this. hello madam/sir, i have a GSD male dog which is 10 months old. One day early morning by 6.30 my dog suddenly got affected with Phids. After two days of that, dog suddenly started jaw clapping continuously with out coming salaiva. I took him to the vet after two days of antibiotic course he didnt stopped that sign. So after that the doctor finally confirmed that as a Canine Distemper.
    Symptoms of my affected dog:
1.Jaw clapping continuously when it will keep standing and if it is sleeping nothing is noticeble
2.No howling, no barking nothing from his end
3.Will eat food as common everyday. But go to the urine or toilet hardly once a day.
4.He is good in noticing the people.
So can you please help me on this by suggesting some tablets and even injections and also any antibiotic course. And also let me know that the solution you are going to suggest me should be permanent and guaranteed.

charan pintu hi, I've been going through youtube videos of distemper to find ones with more recent comments so i could share how our two dogs survived distemper and hopefully help save other dogs .. is your dog still alive?
first we went to the vet and they gave the first infected dog, Marshmallow, like 5 injections (vaccines + antibiotics) and said we had to go back everyday to keep injecting antibiotics until she got better.. we also had our 4 other dogs vaccinated IMMEDIATELY and prayed that none of them would catch the disease. we came back 2 more days to get Marshmallow antibiotics then we decided we couldn't handle it financially anymore.. at that point I had spent 5,000 pesos..
we asked our neighbor and discovered that their dog got distemper too and survived (it was probably the one that infected our dogs) and they spent ZERO PESOS. the answer was a herbal plant called sambong here in the Philippines.
so that's what we did. we crushed sambong leaves (it was growing in the area in front of our house) and orally force fed the juices to them through a syringe, with the needle removed, 2-3x a day. added a bit of sugar so the taste wouldn't be too strong. besides that, we would also force feed them water 2x a day and food (rice with any finely chopped meat but preferably liver, all in broth/soup, so it goes down easier) 1x or 2x a day.. we did this for 4 days for Marshmallow and on her 4th day her sister showed symptoms, so we quarantined them together.. we would disinfect their area (closed-off alley on the side of our house, don't worry, it's like 20x bigger than a cage and they had blankets and rugs) by spraying water and zonrox everyday to kill the virus and stop them from infecting our other 3 dogs. on the 8th day, praise God, they were both breathing fine and we released them again.. it was one of the happiest days of my life.. that was a month ago. now they're all healthy and eating well, and they've gained their normal weight back. idk if you're religious, but prayers helped too. i thank God everyday for saving my dogs. Marshmallow was literally on the brink of death. really hope this helps

I hope your baby made it. I have a dog I rescued direct from the shelter March 2016 who became deathly ill. Severe upper respiratory infection but no pneumonia. He had the goopiest discharge from his nose that would plug it up and he couldn't breathe. He also ran super high fevers which needed overnight ER stays. Vet told me he likely had distemper and it was only a matter of time. He had some of the hallmark distemper signs, not all, but our distemper test came back inconclusive. I wasn't giving up on him and as long as he was willing to eat I was willing to give him a chance. After 6 weeks (and lots of money later) he finally turned the corner and is perfectly healthy today with no residual affects. Unfortunately we'll never know if it was distemper or not.

Yes, my dog Carmella was the first on US soil to ever be completely cured of Distemper. She had reached the neuro stage with Myoclonus in two legs and was beginning to stumble. She had the treatment and is now about 8 years old with full recovery and no residual problems. Please contact Kind Hearts In Action for a vet list.
