I know that this list is iconic, but each time these types of videos are done I would like to see the truly broken lists of Cawblade. They might have been legal only for couple of weeks, but they were the real deal. I think everyone remembers the first time opponent played Dismember into Stoneforge Mystic to get a Batterskull down on turn 3... In standard! For me that really solidified Cawblade as THE broken standard deck.
Yeah, seems weird to compare the best version of Rakdos against the worst version of Cawblade. Especially with the context of them both getting a bunch of cards banned.
Yeah one thing I remember watching tournaments and thinking "Damn that is broken" is using stoneforge to put batterskull into play, the germ token trading away and paying 3 to bounce the equipment and stoneforge to put right back into play again. You'd also be able to tutor and put it into play turn 3. Very weird not having it in here.
Seems weird to use the weakest version of Cawblade when you're comparing it to the version of Rakdos that just had cards banned. I understand wanting to get the symmetry of them both being PT winning but it would have been more interesting to see the more powerful version of the deck.
I always thought about how pros come together and deckbuild for high level events. Is that a possible video for the channel just going through the thought process of pro magic players and their deckbuilding theories?
I remember CawBlade it being my first PT that I was actively following, so this was a stroll down a memory lane for me. But man comparing new cards to Jace and them being better... damn
44:56 even if equipped the other Hawk here, he would still be able to force Chandra through next turn. The correct play here is to hold mana for both Spell Pierces.
Pick a deck from the Eldraine era next. Bant Ramp with Uro, Wilderness Reclamation, Fires of Invention, Simic Oko, Field of the Dead. Honestly I think those 5 decks from the *same Standard* might also be the best Standard decks of all time unless you go back to like combo winter.
Possibly, though when New Phyrexia was released there was a few weeks of Batterskull Caw-Blade, Splinter-Twin Combo, Valakut-Titan Ramp, and Birthing Pod decks running around. It would be fun to see a series of all of these powerhouse decks from different standards competing.
It's pretty wild to see the disparity in average card quality between these two decks, especially considering the history behind Cawblade. Rakdos generates so many additional "pieces" (a blood token here, a goblin token there, treasures, etc.), it attacks its opponents from several different angles, and has a fairly low curve; all of which makes it really difficult for a deck like Cawblade to hang. The only thing Rakdos really has to worry about in this matchup is Colonnade, Jace, and a Sword or two. On the flip side, almost every card in Rakdos generates some kind of advantage that either gets them into their next problem card Cawblade has to deal with or can outright win the game on its own. And that doesn't even take into consideration the post-board games, which I think solidify Rakdos even further in the matchup. Having said all that, I'm glad the actual match here was a bit more competitive than I would have expected. I think over a larger sample size you'd see the disparity manifest itself more prominently.
The fact this was even close vs that kind of middrange power is really impressive. To compare this Rakdos to what the middrange decks of the day were up to, Sphere of the Suns into Inferno Titan is a whole different game! And on the aggro side, goblins had such a hard time with Day of Judgement and Squadron Hawk and could only dream of the kind of value Fable brings to the table.
I don't care about constructed, but this is interesting AF. Personally, I would love Magic Arena to have a mode where you choose from 3different sets from all over Arena and create a deck with that. Deckbuilder's paradise.
We play "ANY standard pauper." at the local store. Doesn't have to be current standard, just has to have been standard at some point. It makes things really interesting and lets some of the more niche block-constructed decks shine.
Paulo's GP winning Caw Blade deck was so insane that I played it almost card for card on the last weekend Storeforge and Jace were legal that it got me to the Pro Tour. Can't disagree with Fable being better than Jace though.
this is exactly the video that proves my point that pre MH cards that can handle standard and more specifically pioneer can come into standard and give life to standard. what would it look like if standard had snap helix bob goyf jtms sfm cryptic and many other fun cards also cards from standards past, like elspeth suns champ, rabblemaster charms seige rhino
You're using a card that pits the best version of a Standard deck against the worst version of a past Standard deck as proof that cards unrelated to either are fair game in fucking *Pioneer?* I'm starting to wish they never made this format to begin with.
@@servantofcygnus Harsh. Pioneer has been a fairly boring format since it’s inception. Just slightly better than standard. It would be a good home for some of the cards like snapcaster, cryptic command, Bob, goyf and Jace.
How I read his comment is that some of the pre MH," Modern all stars" are safe to reprint in standard. A card like lilly (which I know was) etc. I'm not sure if I fully agree, but I think people just miss the pre-MH modern. I'm one of them. Don't get me wrong Modern always had it's faults, but MH esepcially MH2 compeltely ruined it for me and I don't think I'm alone in this. If I wanted to play a format dominated by two sets, I would play standard. It's hard to eplain why, but Pioneer has never been as fun IMO as pre-MH modern was. The first year was great, but after that when the combo decks started to rule it went down hill. Adding some of the old modern "all stars" to pioneer woudln't be the worst idea IMO.
I threw different names of cards that ppl loved, obviously it would have to be looked at. Yet we can all agree is that standard is shit, and ppl would love to use their rotated modern cards. Pioneer would be a good home. Having a 3 year window of standard with cards like a $15 snapcaster gain life again or a $12 goyf would create an exciting format. Oh and up front announce that cards will be banned if they are over powered to the format. So that players are aware that it’s an experiment to bring life to the format and old and new players.
Obliterator wasn’t the powerhouse that everyone thought it to be because BBBB to cast was actually harder than it looks and all color removal dismember kept it in check… Phyrexian mana was hax
couple things because i dont think this was very fair. lsv was already in the mindset he was going to lose so he played a little sloppy. this was the worst version of caw blade the better ones played batterskull which makes stoneforge mystic a real threat. and the rackdos player played fable like 19 times while lsv played jace 3
Well this isn’t the banned list so it makes sense. Also SFM is about comparable to Fable in Power level. Hammertime plays it and that deck is in the same tier as creativity. The cards are even similar in that both are played mostly as synergy pieces that are okay on their own.
Those Throwback challenges are nice, but I don't think they actually show the real story. I mean, today the threat level is higher than 10 years ago, so when a deck like Cawblade was legal it shined in a less powerful standard
@@SuperbFairy That really hasn’t been a case for awhile now. In recent times, its control beats aggro and combo. Midrange beats control and moderate aggro. Combo beats midrange. The formats are a little screwy the past few years.
Naw Fable isn’t stronger than Jace. I’d rather get hit with a Fable anyyyy day compared to a Jace. You could see how he thought about it after the fact. Big nope LSV still love you.

First thing I was wondering was: "Where is batterskull?"
Yeah, seems weird to compare the best version of Rakdos against the worst version of Cawblade. Especially with the context of them both getting a bunch of cards banned.
Agreed, the list right before the ban is what should've been played
Yeah one thing I remember watching tournaments and thinking "Damn that is broken" is using stoneforge to put batterskull into play, the germ token trading away and paying 3 to bounce the equipment and stoneforge to put right back into play again. What people don't remember are the TwinBlade lists that only really popped up the very last week of them being legal in standard
"Fable of Kiki Jiki is better than mind sculptor". And I can't even argue -- what a wild thing.
If it wasn’t LSV the guy who said it, we wouldn’t believe it😅
It's true. Fable is insane value for 3 mana.
jace hasnt been the power house it was for a long time
Those words make me wanna vomit but 100% accurate.
was going to say the same thing... at least lily is in standard
I would have loved to see the batterskull version of caw blade, but seeing the deck in general brings back memories
I know you play PT winning lists, but playing the latest Rakdos list against the earliest Cawblade list doesn’t seem right.
Seems weird to use the weakest version of Cawblade when you're comparing it to the version of Rakdos that just had cards banned. I understand wanting to get the symmetry of them both being PT winning but it would have been more interesting to see the more powerful version of the deck.

Cawblade made me quit going to FNM when I was 12 it holds a special place in my heart

@33:20 why did you kill the legendary red land?
My prediction before watching is that these celestial colonnades will turn out to be absolutely massive, let's see how it goes
not knowing what chadra does is why you lost that last game

On g1, why not fetch the third hawk and discard it, since it is such an horrible top deck anyway?
The chance of topdecking it is minimal and the card could be useful if the game goes long.
