Just want you to know that this video made the difference in me getting my Mini 4 Pro replaced for free. I sent it back to DJI because the gimbal was trembling, and they saw in my video that I sent them that there was snow on the ground, and wanted to blame environmental conditions for the shakiness . The minute they viewed this video, they sent it from Texas to California for more testing, and specifically outdoor testing that they couldn't do in Texas because of their proximity to an airport. When they got the same result I did, in warm conditions, they sent me a new one which works flawlessly in the cold and wind. So, thank you for doing this video.
great that you went out in -35c (let's not forget even colder with the wind chill)... great little drone, amazing actually... thank you... used to walk my dog in the park... over 20yrs ago :)
Hey Mark, Yesterday in Edmonton, I ventured outdoors and piloted my M4P drone. Despite the favorable battery levels under the prevailing conditions, retrieving my drone posed a challenge due to the dense ice fog. The M4P didn't respond to my landing controls because the underneath sensors were detecting the fog. I resorted to pressing the return home button, and although it initially struggled, it eventually landed safely. Fortunately, I was in my backyard, and the drone was only 30 feet above ground.
That's interesting, because my downward sensors weren't working properly either. Not to the extent that you experienced, but when I landed the drone didn't know it was down and kept the props going until I manually turn them off by holding down on the stick.
@@CreateandKaptivate I noticed with my mini3 Pro the downward sensor lens collect a film of moisture. That screw up the function of it. A few months ago i flew during a massive forest fire and did a RTH. The drone decent full speed into the ground . Drone was destroyed.
It’s the forward motion that super cooled the battery. Hovering and slow flight will keep the battery at 8 degrees, especially under these extreme conditions in Calgary.
I had an experience flying in sub-freezing temperatures in light snow. The combination of the condensation and temperature caused ice and snow to form on the motors which generated an “ice causing a motor overload return to home immediately” warning. Yes it the Mini 4 Pro can fly in extreme cold conditions but for how long? If their is snow (light or heavy) or no snow but the humidity is high and it is is at, below, or around freezing, ice can form on the motors that could cause them to overload and seize up. I was very fortunate to get my drone back to home. I learned my lesson. So, it is more than just extreme cold conditions one should be considering. Nice test!
Yeah I agree, there are more factors to consider than just the cold. Like you said, snow or higher humidity combine with the cold can be a problem. Typically it's quite dry here, so that's likely why I didn't run into more problems.
The cold air helps a little because the air is more dense, but the temperature affects more the battery. I live in Quebec and I’ve never had any problems flying in very cold temperatures. I just fly back sooner than usual, maybe at 40% instead of 20%.
I was pretty surprised that it did as well as it did. I don't see myself flying in those temperatures, but now I'm not worried about -15 or something like that.
Hi Mark, I flew the Drone again today, between -15 C and -18 Celcius, and the I monitored the battery temps. Flew it on multiple occasions and the battery temp went to 12 Celcius, most of the time around 15 Celcius.
Well it can handle the cold, the battery temperature was dropping quite low at the end but it was up in that extreme cold for almost 10 min. I wouldn't recommend flying in -35 anyway. But that leads me to believe it should have no problem in reasonably cold temperatures.
I often fly in -15c as long as it’s not windy. My air 2s will give me a low battery warning till the draw on them warms it up. It’s been 3 years now and still no issues doing this regularly in the winter
In a way that's why I did this test, not to see if I can fly at -35C, but it could, then I'd feel much more comfortable flying in more reasonable temperatures like -15C. So that's good to know you have had no issues.
Video was a bit foggy - try letting the drone acclimate to the cold (without battery) so the lens doesn't fog. Then just before flight, take the battery out of your pocket and fly. This should help prevent the fogging on the lens and prevent snow and ice from sticking to the drone body.
Amazing shots! Thanks for risking your drone and testing this for us, I have been curious what the max cold would be for this drone and safe to say I will likely never be in this extreme cold.
Haha yes, I don't really plan to fly in those temperatures again, but I feel it should have no problem flying in colder temperatures that are more reasonable.
Thanks! I hope to see test on flying in windy weather. It’s been cold in ND and I know a drone could fly, but I never fly higher than 50 ft because we consistently have 10 to 20 mph winds lately.
I've flown in 20mph winds, but it was also summer and warmer. The problem is getting any sort of smooth footage is very difficult. It's often quite windy here, so I may do a wind test at some point.
Yeah it should be fine flying in -8°C. Back in the fall I was questioning flying in -5°C. Those boot are Wind River, but they're probably 10-15 years old, yet still the warmest winter boots I have.
Dude, you are brave, im in Minnesota and I don't push it past 0 degrees.. That my friend is all you out there freezing. Thanks for the vid for our entertainment, I was cols watching you.
I’d be curious if the low battery temperature did any damage to it. You should monitor its flight time after this. The surprising thing to me is the touch screen works at that temperature. Those of us who experience it certainly know what cold “looks like”. The views of downtown and the smoke scream cold. I was coming down Centre St last night and all the smoke from the buildings in the core was rising straight up quite a ways. Would’ve made a cool shot.
I chose to use one of my older batteries, in case I damaged it. But that battery has been a really good up to this point, so it'll be interesting to see if it did affect it. Like you were saying about coming dow Center St, it was when I saw what downtown looked like, that I decided I needed to do this video at that time because it just looked cold!
You could keep your batteries warm in a case with a hot pack and get decent flight time. I keep my extra GoPro batteries warm when recording in cold temps snowmobiling. Great shots of downtown!
Really that's why I tried this, I don't plan on flying in extreme cold, but at least I know it should be fine in more reasonable temperatures like -10 or so.
Dang man I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone fly in those temps. Here in Florida if the temps got close to that we’d all be dead. You are a brave soul. Lol. Very “cool” test. 😂
Haha, I did think this is maybe something Kevin would try, but then again, you would never get these temperatures in Florida....thankfully. I do really like Florida though, I visit there occasionally.
@@CreateandKaptivate hahaha. Oh I’d give it a try if I knew I’d survive. I’d probably stay in the truck. Lol. Next time you’re heading to FL let us know!!!
Well, you may be lucky using the devices powered on and they heat themselves enough to not die. But I would never do this. If the batteries will get too cold, the power may almost instantly drop and the drone drops, too. For the remote there are some more things to consider: a) the batteries do not need to deliver enough power to keep them warm by themselves and b) LCD screens may get black at negative temperatures, you may very fast do not see anything on it. Just try to leave both devices unpowered outside for half an hour or so and try again. Relying on power loss heating for the drone and residual heat in the remote is more brave than I would be for sure. Just saying. Always follow the specs. Gorgeous view btw.!!! 😳
I just thought it would be interesting to see how it did in those temperatures. But I agree with what you're saying, the battery temp was getting pretty low, and at some point it would fail. I am surprised that I didn't have issues with the screen. Anyway I think I'll stick to warmer temperatures.👍
Welcome to my world “Alaska” Mini 3 pro & Evo 2 Pro Only suggestion is I like to silicone wipe my blades to reduce chance of frosting up. I also will use a stylus t o keep fingers in gloves. Other than that nice job
Interestingly enough - I tried flying at -20c with huge windchill... and what gave up was connection cable between my phone and rc-n2 remote :) I heated up the battery next to my cars air duct and that part was fine. Though the biggest issue is condensation when taking it into warm environment after that freezing temp flight...
Yeah I agree, I was a bit worried about the condensation. When I brought everything inside, I could see the condensation on anything metal, like my phone and tripod.
I’m from Calgary and own the same drone. From my experience the battery can drop really fast in the cold especially if there is a wind chill. I’ve had mine out in a blizzard on the top of a mountain and it did perform very well. Are you using an ND?
Inspiring! I don’t have the new Mini 4 pro (which i might get next year)? Love it’s new features! but i have the great Mavic 3 and the great Mini 3 Pro and know that the specs mention to not fly lower than -10 Celsius and not in hot weather above plus 40? So Bravo! Here in the north of Montreal i flew my Mini 3 pro and Mavic 3 at minus 9 which was fine! Just wondering if the Mini 3 Pro can do the same thing when we here in Quebec will get hit with extreme cold?
I would assume the mini 3 pro could handle similar temperatures. Actually the battery I was using, was originally for my Mini 3 Pro. The main thing to watch is the battery temp.
Dji take some beating, here in Wisconsin it’s cold as hell but would rather fly my mini 2 and 3pro later in the year when it’s warmer, good reason for that is because can you imagine the effort to find it in subzero temperatures if the worst happened!
hi if your going to fly in extreme conditions tape off the vents to stop cold air..batteries work on chemical reaction it needs to stay warm .this is why when you went up it warmed up as you flew forward the cold air cooled down the batt...keep batt warm....
I flew mine in minus 10 degrees last week and it flew great. Just that a few clips didn’t record on the SD card during Active tracking. I wonder why. Maybe it was my mistake
It's hard to say, it could have been something with the cold, both my drone and controller recordings worked in the cold but I also wasn't capturing multiple clips.
I took my mini 4 pro out yesterday at -25. I had a lot of gimbal jello then a gimbal overload error. When I tried moving the gimbal manually after landing it was very stiff laterally. It was ok once it warmed up again.
I'm surprised I never had any issues like that. I know when I went to put the drone back in it's case after flying it, I could barely open the latches. They normally move freely but in that cold they were super stiff. It could have been something similar happening with your gimbal.
I tested again yesterday at -10 and it was fine. I guess I can’t complain to DJI as it works within the published specifications. It is unfortunate my particular Mini 4 pro is sensitive to extreme cold.
Yeah that would be interesting, I know sometimes when it gets really cold, the mountains (ski hills), which are close by, will get warmer temps up top.
I flew in 10 degree weather and for some reason while flying forward, the drone seemed to want to ascend upwards while flying straight. Wonder why this is. I am guessing due to the air being thicker.
@CreateandKaptivate well after recalibration of sensors, emu etc new props it still ascended until I downgraded firmware and then reupgraded the new firmware. Issue is fixed.
At the moment, with my mini 4 pro the daily temperature here is 37°c and the drone over heats before I take off. That's during the day, but in the morning is ok.
I tell ya it looks like the ice ages out there they should use this video in a movie that is really something just see it it's crazy, DJI mini 4 pro does it again what a ****** drone
Great vid, very useful. I wondered whether the blades would ice up with frozen condensation. I'm in UK so that temperature will never happen. Thanks for braving the temps 😊
Yeah, i was quite surprised with how it did. I don't see myself flying in those temperatures again, but now I feel more comfortable flying in colder temperatures that are more reasonable.
Yeah, I didn't actually notice it at the time, but I did after when I was putting the video together. I think it was just a glitch from the cold. When I landed it also didn't know that it had landed and the prop kept going and it was bouncing around before I manually stopped the props.
Same [Preparing to takeoff] indicator happened to me when I had a cold flight at -15 but it fluctuates during flight. Looked at it through Air Data and you can see how it flash a number of times.
The critical thing is the temperature of the battery when you put it in the drone. If it is too cold the drone will drop out of the sky very soon after take-off.
Yeah, even though the battery level wasn't dropping fast, at the end the temperature was, and I don't think it would have made it much longer. Regardless, I was frozen anyway.
@@CreateandKaptivate so am I. That battery was freezing. Yeah California. Problem is there’s no weather here. Would be nice to see some snow now and then or maybe some lightning haha
@@CreateandKaptivate I've tested it many times. I even figured to save the recording, or screenshot. Now the joke is, I can't find them ! I have 2 MicroSD card, one for the Drone and the RC2. When I checked the content on the card, nothing !! Is it possible that this would work only with 1 card in the RC2 ? I'm bummed . LOL
It might be saving the recording to the controller internal storage. If you just power up the controller and go into Profile, then at the bottom select Settings, then down on the left tap on Storage and make sure the Current Storage Location is set to the SD Card
i flew mine at -10C in the forest and got a bit into talking with a stranger so let it hover in about 30m for 4-5 minutes. Than it crashed and fell in the snow, seems no damage so far.
Oh no! I hope the drone is ok. That makes me wonder if I had kept flying much longer if mine would have just stopped flying. The battery temp was getting pretty low.
I'm just finishing up a video that show this and a bunch more stuff, but all you need to do on the RC2 controller is swipe down from the top of the screen twice and it opens a quick settings menu and from there you can start the screen recording.
Totally, and I don't plan on flying in temperatures much colder than -10 anyway. But now I know it can handle colder temps, it's more a question of how much cold I'm willing to endure
@@CreateandKaptivate lol I heard it's not good for the batteries. For ourselves we can dress for it, but the fingertips is what takes the most of the damage. The batteries on the other hand don't got no fur lol
Soooo.... I guess I can fly it today when it will be 3 degrees F. Of course I got it for Christmas and it's been 35-55mph wind gusts and freezing cold since the day I got it.... Screw it, the wind is finally 5-15mph today but a high of 3, I'm doing it!
LOL No No you go right ahead, I get to stay warm and pat my dog and watch. As a fellow Canadian, here in Ontario, it's not as cold...
It's almost worse at high temps, because the drone is generating heat. At least in the cold that helps counter the effects.
You know when you hear that crunch sound under your feet it is FKn cold!
Haha totally, that's the first thing I thought when I initially watched the footage.
Good Info..😁
Thanks, although I likely won't be flying in those temperatures, I feel more confident flying in colder temperatures that are a bit more reasonable.
I always start with a warm battery in your pocket or a hot place👍
That's important, I tried to keep my battery warm until just before I started recording.
I tell ya it looks like the ice ages out there they should use this video in a movie that is really something just see it it's crazy, DJI mini 4 pro does it again what a ****** drone
Yeah I was very impressed with the mini 4 pro performance, and the video really emphasized the cold.
Silicone wipe your blades, works great
I noticed in flight you had the [Preparing to take off] on with your RC. What's that all about ?
Yeah, I didn't actually notice it at the time, but I did after when I was putting the video together. I think it was just a glitch from the cold. When I landed it also didn't know that it had landed and the prop kept going and it was bouncing around before I manually stopped the props.
Same [Preparing to takeoff] indicator happened to me when I had a cold flight at -15 but it fluctuates during flight. Looked at it through Air Data and you can see how it flash a number of times.
interesting....I wonder if the cold is messing with the sensors or something.
😂 that battery almost froze! Wow. It’s 50 degrees here at 9pm 😝
I'm surprised it made it as long as it did, I was completely frozen. I'd much prefer the temperatures you're getting.
@@CreateandKaptivate so am I. That battery was freezing. Yeah California. Problem is there’s no weather here. Would be nice to see some snow now and then or maybe some lightning haha
Hi ! I’m curious to know how do you start recording the screen with the RC2 ?? I have the same kit as you, never flew under -12 C yet
If you swipe down twice from the top of the screen it opens a quick settings menu where you can start your screen recording.
@@CreateandKaptivate Thank you so much !!! BTW, I live in a cold area too, but no way I\ll go play at -35 Celcius ! Congrats to you
No problem! I don't see myself going out in those temperatures again, but it was a good test.
Oh wow it just failed in the air, you had no chance of intervention? Good to know, Thanks for sharing
Oh no! I hope the drone is ok. That makes me wonder if I had kept flying much longer if mine would have just stopped flying. The battery temp was getting pretty low.
Hi, how did you record the screen from the remote?
I'm just finishing up a video that show this and a bunch more stuff, but all you need to do on the RC2 controller is swipe down from the top of the screen twice and it opens a quick settings menu and from there you can start the screen recording.
thanks@@CreateandKaptivate
Looks like a scene from the movie "the day after tomorrow"
Yeah it was a pretty interesting sight, it really helped emphasize the cold.
Where were you flying?
It was Calgary, Canada.
-35° !! Canada?
That's correct👍
I believe that the temperature inside the drone drop as it get faster (like RTH)
I agree, I think part of the reason for that is the vents, the faster you move the more cold air going into those vents.
Why not read and follow the product specifications?
Yes that's probably the best thing to do.
😳 Where the heck was that?
This was in Calgary, Canada.
@@CreateandKaptivate thank you, I’ve been there, but it was spring and a lot warmer!
It's probably a good reason why the manual States -10
Haha that's awesome👍3 F is still quite cold, but you know the drone can handle it. It's just a question of how much cold you want to endure.
Fantástico parabéns 👏🏾
Thanks👍
Here in Edmonton Alberta Canada it's -40⁰C. Planes can't fly let alone DJI mini 4
Yeah winters in Canada can get extremely cold.
I won't take my M4P out in this weather for two reasons, I do not like cold and the plastics will break easier in the cold
I just thought it would be a good test, but I certainly don't plan on flying in those temperatures. I don't really like the cold either.
LOL No No you go right ahead, I get to stay warm and pat my dog and watch. As a fellow Canadian, here in Ontario, it's not as cold... YET :) I might go for a quick flight later today as long as it's not windy, supposed to be -7 this afternoon. great videos mine are more silent I am going to work on some voice overs soon.@@CreateandKaptivate
Thanks! and if you get out...have fun and try to stay warm.
What city is this? New york or sumfin
Haha, like in "the day after tomorrow" 😂Actually it was in Calgary, Canada
@@CreateandKaptivate wow sounds amazingly North of me. Im in seattle.. Im sorta glad its not that cold here
which city ???
That was in Calgary, Canada.
Opposite problem, we can get 40C plus days.... i cannot imagine a -35C
Yeah that's pretty hot, I image the drone would over heat pretty quick. I know I would.
Where is that??😁👌
This is in Calgary, it's not that often we get temperatures this low. But that's winter in Canada.
I winced every time you took your gloves off. Keep your gloves on and use a stylus to operate the screen!
Hey, now that's a good Idea! Thanks for the suggestion👍
Im in Brazil actualy Im flying in extremely hot summer almost 55ºC today
Wow! that's extreme on the other end of the scale. I'm surprised it doesn't instantly overheat. Pretty impressive👍
Next test, sit in your car with the heat on to test the drone
Haha yeah, that would have made it a lot easier on me.👍
@@CreateandKaptivate During the colder months I never stand outside the car. Tried flying the drone from inside my home, but the signal isn't that great.
Extreme cold isnt that bad, worse is combo of cold and higher humidity. Ice on props is never a good thing
Yes, I would agree that. Where I'm at we don't have much humidity, so it a very dry cold. Which is also easier to dress for.
Where in the US are you. -6 here in the UK 😂
That was a pretty bad cold snap 😬 I'm actually not in the US, this was in Calgary, Canada.
Just don’t bring it quickly back to a warm house. Let it gradually warm up.
That's a good point, with it being that cold I was a bit worried about condensation.
better you than me lol
Haha and I probably won't do it again either.
Thank goodness for global warming, else it would be -60c.
Haha...right?
It's colder because of global warming... Actually. For real.
😂😂😂😂😂
Need to learn the metric system. Clueless to this Celsius stuff
-30° C is = -22° F
There you go, @wildoutdoorsandmore gave you an idea of how the temps compare.
Most of them can....Mini2 SE was flown in 1F recently it did fine I didnt I said f that and after 25mins went in, let them acclimate to the cold warm the props up and go through basic checks and they fly no problem.
Yeah it's quite surprising. I think they handle the cold better than I do.
