This is interesting. Is it even possible for a whipout? If a coin decreases in value, it will eventually be worth something as long as there is 1 buyer. Maybe a hard fork will reduce a value of a coin to near $0... But you can never go to $0 and the coin can never be removed from the internet. If people know this, then they will wait till a coin stops on it's down trend and buy it trying to make money regardless.

I presume we start with half of the original value on each chain and as one one goes down the other goes up... is there a possibility that we loose half our value somehow even by just holding and doing nothing?
In my understanding: if one of the two chains gets wiped out again, your funds return to the state they were in before the fork... The value of your funds is not determined by the chains directly, rather by spot market prices on exchanges. There surely are many factors that determine the value of your Bitcoin right after such a fork and wipe-out has occurred. My guess would be that the value falls for a bit due to uncertainty/fear. And then rebounds after the dust has settled. i.e. losing half your value after a fork and wipe-out would be based solely on market uncertainty surrounding the fork, not on the fork itself.

A hard fork is not a 51% attack. If you read the Bitcoin whitepaper, it doesn't even think about changing the protocol as an attack.
