- The Butchart Gardens is an internationally known public attraction that receive over a million visitors each year. A 118-year-old internationally renowned 55-acre display garden that is designated as a national historic site in Canada in 2004 for it’s 100th birthday. It has 900 bedding plant varieties with 26 greenhouses. It is created by Jennie Butchart, who envisioned transforming the space into beautiful garden haven, overflowing with lush greens and colourful blooms.
What’s inside the Garden:
Sunken Garden is a quiet and peaceful place that took 9 years to create and has 5 acres of garden with 151 flower beds, 65,000 bulbs planted.
Rose Garden has an impressive collection of 2,500 rose plants, 7 types of roses, 280 varieties of roses within 30 rose arches.
Japanese Garden is an acre of lush landscape, covered with 500 Rhododendron and Azalea flowers, 74 Japanese maples and 200 metres of flowing streams.
Italian Garden has 18 flower beds, 85 varieties of plants, 22,000. Spring bulbs and biennials within 21,780 square feet gardens.
Mediterranean Garden consists of 110 plant varieties and 9 garden beds within 21,780 square feet garden.
Rose Carousel is housed within the 7,500 square feet of Children’s Pavilion, which has a dome with a 23-metre clear span, a full fronted glass façade and a roof planted with native plant species.
How to get there:
From Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, Butchart Garden is accessible by riding #70 or #72 bus and disembark at Royal Oak Exchange. From Bay F of Royal Oak Exchange ride #75 bus going to Saanichton Exchange and get off at the entrance of Butchart Gardens.
Day pass costs $5 and you can ride as many buses ride as you like within the day. You can purchase it inside the bus just make sure you have exact cash to pay the fare.
